David Guetta
Axwell (real name — Axel Christofer Hedfors; born December 18, 1977, Lund, Sweden) is a Swedish DJ, music producer and remixer, one of the key figures of the European house scene of the 2000s and global electronic music of the following decade. He is a member of Swedish House Mafia together with Sebastian Ingrosso and Steve Angello, co-founder of the project Axwell Λ Ingrosso and creator of the label Axtone Records.
Before Swedish House Mafia appeared, Axwell had already built an international career through his own singles and remixes. Among the best-known works in his catalog are Feel the Vibe, Watch the Sunrise, I Found U, Center of the Universe, Barricade, Nobody Else, Until the Lights Go Out and Whatever Turns You On. A special place is also occupied by Tell Me Why by Supermode, the remixes of Sweet Disposition and In My Mind, as well as the music of Axwell Λ Ingrosso and Swedish House Mafia.
Childhood in Lund and first experiments with electronic music
Axel Hedfors was born on December 18, 1977, in the city of Lund in southern Sweden. His interest in rhythm began in childhood: from around the age of nine, he played drums.
During his teenage years, the traditional drum kit gave way to the computer. Hedfors was attracted by the possibility of creating every part of a composition himself — rhythm, bass, melody and arrangement — without the need to assemble a full band.
In the mid-1990s, he was involved in the computer music scene and created electronic compositions using tracker software. One of his early aliases was Quazar.
In 1995, he also began releasing music under the name OXL. These early works were much closer to techno, hard trance and acid-oriented sounds than to the music for which Axwell would become known a decade later.
From OXL to Axwell
By the end of the 1990s, Hedfors gradually moved away from harder electronic music toward house. Around the turn of the decade, he began using the name Axwell and became increasingly active as a producer and remixer.
His early discography includes a large number of aliases and studio projects. This practice was common on the European club scene at the time: different names made it possible to release music on several labels and separate different stylistic directions.
One of the most significant early projects was Mambana, created together with singer Isabel Fructuoso.
Mambana
Mambana differs noticeably from Axwell’s later festival-oriented sound. The project centered on soulful house, latin house and vocal club music.
The main releases were:
- No Reason — 2001;
- Libre — 2003;
- Felicidad — 2004.
Libre received international distribution and helped strengthen Hedfors’ reputation as a house producer even before the release of his biggest solo singles.
At the same time, he also worked under other names, including Jetlag, Starbeach, Mahogany People and Soulplayaz.
Remixes and the development of Axwell
In the early 2000s, Axwell gained recognition as a remixer. Over the years, he reworked songs by Usher, N*E*R*D, Madonna, Nelly Furtado, Hard-Fi, Deep Dish, Pharrell Williams and other artists.
His remixes were usually not limited to adding a club rhythm to an existing song. Hedfors could almost completely rebuild the harmony, dynamics and structure of the original, preserving only the vocals or the most recognizable musical element.
This ability would later become one of the defining features of his production approach.
Feel the Vibe
His first major international solo success was Feel the Vibe, which appeared in 2004.
In 2005, the track received a vocal version titled Feel the Vibe ('Til the Morning Comes) featuring Tara McDonald.
The single reached No. 16 on the UK Singles Chart and topped the British Official Dance Singles Chart.
For early Axwell, the track became an important transition point. The influence of disco and funky house is still clearly audible, but the composition already features a clear melodic structure and a large-scale climax that would later become characteristic of his progressive house period.
Axtone Records
In 2005, Axwell founded his own label, Axtone Records.
Initially, Axtone was created primarily as an independent platform for releasing the producer’s own music. Gradually, its direction expanded, and the label began releasing works by other electronic artists.
At different times, Sebastian Ingrosso, Steve Angello, Laidback Luke, Don Diablo, CamelPhat, Kölsch, Hard Rock Sofa, Thomas Gold, Shapov, Kryder, D.O.D and other musicians were associated with Axtone.
For Axwell, Axtone became not a secondary brand but an independent part of his career. The label survived changes in the house scene from electro and progressive house of the 2000s and 2010s to more contemporary club sounds.
In 2025, Axtone celebrated its twentieth anniversary.
Watch the Sunrise
Another notable work from the early period was Watch the Sunrise featuring British vocalist Steve Edwards.
The track appeared in 2005 and reached No. 3 on the UK dance chart.
Unlike the more club-oriented Feel the Vibe, this recording particularly highlights Axwell’s interest in emotional vocal house — a direction that would later become one of the recurring elements of his music.
Supermode and Tell Me Why
In 2006, Axwell teamed up with Steve Angello in the project Supermode.
Their main and essentially only classic single was Tell Me Why, built from material taken from two Bronski Beat songs — Smalltown Boy and Why?
The track reached No. 13 on the UK Singles Chart and became one of the most successful releases by both producers before the emergence of Swedish House Mafia.
Supermode continued to exist as a recognizable name later as well: years afterward, Axtone released new remixes of Tell Me Why.
I Found U
In 2007, Axwell released I Found U featuring Max'C.
The track became the biggest UK solo hit of his early career, reaching No. 6 on the UK Singles Chart.
I Found U clearly demonstrates Axwell’s transition from the funky and vocal house of the first half of the decade toward a larger-scale sound. The track already contains a principle that would later become important to Swedish progressive house: an emotional vocal section is combined with a large club arrangement designed both for the dancefloor and for a mainstream audience.
Swedish House Mafia before the group officially emerged
By the mid-2000s, Axwell was already regularly working and performing with Sebastian Ingrosso and Steve Angello.
The connections between the musicians existed long before Swedish House Mafia became a full-fledged project. Axwell recorded Together and It's True with Ingrosso, worked in Supermode with Angello, and in 2007 all three joined Laidback Luke to release Get Dumb under their individual names.
On August 12, 2007, Axwell, Angello and Ingrosso performed at Amnesia in Ibiza as part of BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix under the name Swedish House Mafia.
This is one of the earliest well-documented major sets by the trio under the name that would later become the official group name. For that reason, describing it without qualification as their “first performance together” would be inaccurate: the musicians had already shared the stage before.
What a Wonderful World and other late-2000s work
Axwell’s independent career continued developing alongside the future Swedish House Mafia.
In 2008, he released What a Wonderful World together with Bob Sinclar and vocalist Ron Carroll.
Other important works from the period include Open Your Heart with Dirty South and Rudy.
Axwell also remained highly active as a remixer, with his remixes becoming independent components of his DJ sets.
Sweet Disposition
One of his best-known reworks was the version of Sweet Disposition by The Temper Trap, created by Axwell together with Dirty South.
The remix received a Grammy nomination in the category Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical.
For Axwell, it was the first of four Recording Academy nominations.
Swedish House Mafia
By the end of the 2000s, Axwell, Sebastian Ingrosso and Steve Angello had fully transformed their joint performances into the independent project Swedish House Mafia.
In 2010, One appeared — the first major original single officially released under the group’s name. Its vocal version, One (Your Name), was recorded with Pharrell Williams.
It was followed by Miami 2 Ibiza with Tinie Tempah, Save the World with John Martin, Antidote with Knife Party, Greyhound and Don't You Worry Child.
Swedish House Mafia became one of the central projects of the period when European electronic music moved from clubs to stadiums and the world’s biggest festival stages.
DJ Mag and international recognition
Axwell’s growing popularity developed in parallel with the rise of Swedish House Mafia.
In the DJ Mag Top 100 DJs 2010 ranking, he placed No. 10 — the highest position of his solo history in the poll.
In the same ranking, Steve Angello placed 14th, Sebastian Ingrosso 16th, while Swedish House Mafia itself debuted at No. 23.
Save the World and Don't You Worry Child
Save the World, released by Swedish House Mafia in 2011, earned the members their first Grammy nomination in the category Best Dance Recording.
In 2012, the group released Don't You Worry Child. The song topped the UK Singles Chart and became the biggest international hit of the trio’s first era.
It earned Axwell another Grammy nomination.
In My Mind — Axwell Remix
Alongside his work with Swedish House Mafia, Axwell continued his own activity.
Particularly notable was his remix of In My Mind by Ivan Gough and Feenixpawl featuring Georgi Kay.
The rework became one of the most recognizable festival tracks of the era and earned Axwell a Grammy nomination in the category Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical.
In total, the Recording Academy lists Axel Hedfors with four Grammy nominations and no wins: two for remixes and two as a member of Swedish House Mafia.
The first ending of Swedish House Mafia
In 2012, Swedish House Mafia announced that they would end their joint activities after a final tour.
One Last Tour concluded on March 24, 2013, at Ultra Music Festival in Miami.
After that, Steve Angello focused on his own career, while Axwell and Sebastian Ingrosso continued an especially close creative partnership.
Center of the Universe
In 2013, Axwell released Center of the Universe featuring vocals by Magnus Carlson.
The track became one of the main solo works from the period between the first era of Swedish House Mafia and the emergence of Axwell Λ Ingrosso.
That same year, Axwell and Ingrosso recorded Roar for the soundtrack to the Pixar animated film Monsters University.
Axwell Λ Ingrosso
In 2014, Axwell and Sebastian Ingrosso formalized their collaboration as a separate project, Axwell Λ Ingrosso.
The duo’s music retained the festival scale of Swedish House Mafia but relied much more heavily on vocal pop structures and melodic dance-pop.
Among the first releases were Something New and On My Way.
On the UK Singles Chart, Something New reached No. 22.
Sun Is Shining
In 2015, Sun Is Shining was released.
The track became one of the duo’s best-known works. Instead of the heavy electro-house foundation associated with classic Swedish House Mafia, the central elements here are piano harmony, vocals and a bright melodic climax.
Axwell Λ Ingrosso continued this direction in later songs including This Time, Dream Bigger, Thinking About You and I Love You.
Barricade
Despite his active work in the duo, Axwell continued releasing material under his own name.
In 2016, the instrumental Barricade appeared — a harder festival-oriented track that differed noticeably from the vocal releases of Axwell Λ Ingrosso.
It demonstrated that the producer’s solo catalog remained an independent direction and did not fully overlap with the duo’s music.
More Than You Know
In 2017, Axwell Λ Ingrosso released More Than You Know.
The track became the project’s biggest international hit. In the United Kingdom, it reached No. 30 on the main chart, while in several European countries it climbed significantly higher.
The song particularly demonstrates the transition from traditional progressive house to full-fledged dance-pop: the electronic arrangement is built around a short guitar motif, vocals and a self-contained pop chorus.
In 2017, the More Than You Know EP was also released, after which material from several years of the duo’s work was collected on the 15-track edition More Than You Know (Bonus Track Edition).
The latter is more accurately considered a compiled full-length release rather than a traditional studio album created entirely within a single album cycle.
The return of Swedish House Mafia
On March 25, 2018, Axwell, Sebastian Ingrosso and Steve Angello unexpectedly performed together again at Ultra Music Festival in Miami — exactly five years after the final concert of the first era.
The return of Swedish House Mafia gradually changed the future of Axwell Λ Ingrosso. After several final performances, the duo’s activity was wound down, and Axwell and Ingrosso once again focused on the trio.
Nobody Else
In November 2018, Axwell released the solo single Nobody Else on Axtone.
The track marked a return to a more club-oriented sound. It contains much less of the emotional progressive house climax associated with the festival era and more influence from the classic British dance scene.
Nobody Else became Axwell’s last full solo single for several years.
Work with Lady Gaga
An important chapter in his production career was his work on Chromatica, the Lady Gaga album released in 2020.
Axwell was among the album’s producers and participated in the creation of Alice, Free Woman and Sine from Above with Elton John.
In the official credits for Alice and Free Woman, he is listed as co-writer and producer, as well as a musician involved in programming, keyboards, bass, drums and other elements of the arrangement.
The project demonstrated another side of his career: Axwell is capable of working within major pop production not only as a guest DJ or remixer, but as a full-fledged studio producer.
Paradise Again
After reuniting on stage, Swedish House Mafia also returned to studio releases.
In 2021, they released It Gets Better, Lifetime and Moth to a Flame with The Weeknd.
On April 15, 2022, the group released Paradise Again — the first full studio album in its history.
While the earlier Until One and Until Now were primarily compilation and mix projects, Paradise Again was created as a standalone album of original material.
Its sound became significantly darker and more diverse than the classic progressive house period of Save the World and Don't You Worry Child. The record incorporates house, synthpop, hip-hop, big beat and more minimalist electronic approaches.
Solo return: Until the Lights Go Out
After several years in which most of his attention was focused on Swedish House Mafia, Axwell once again became active with his solo discography.
On May 16, 2025, Axtone released Until the Lights Go Out featuring British duo CARMA.
Axtone officially described it as Axwell’s first solo single since Nobody Else in 2018.
An early version of the track had already appeared in his festival sets in 2024, after which the producer continued refining the arrangement.
The return of solo music coincided with Axtone’s twentieth anniversary.
Whatever Turns You On
On June 26, 2026, Axwell released Whatever Turns You On featuring Swedish singer and songwriter Bonn.
The release continued the new solo period that began with Until the Lights Go Out.
Compared with the club-oriented Nobody Else, Axwell’s melodic side is more prominent here: the vocal song gradually develops into a large electronic climax while maintaining a connection with the direction the producer had explored since the era of I Found U and later progressive house.
Swedish House Mafia in the 2020s
At the same time, Axwell continues working as a member of Swedish House Mafia.
After Paradise Again, the group released See the Light, Ray of Solar, Lioness with Niki & The Dove, Finally with Alicia Keys and Wait So Long (Why Do I Have To).
In July 2026, Swedish House Mafia presented Happiness Is So Sad together with Swedish singer Lykke Li.
Thus, the return of Axwell’s solo singles does not mean the end of the trio’s activity: both directions are once again developing in parallel.
Axtone after two decades
Axtone also continues to operate as an active label.
Over the years, its catalog has passed through several phases of house music, while the brand itself has expanded beyond conventional record releases. Artist management, events and its own stage projects have been added to its musical activity.
Through Axtone, Axwell maintains a connection with the part of the electronic scene that exists independently of Swedish House Mafia.
Grammy
According to the official statistics of the Recording Academy, Axel Hedfors has four Grammy nominations and no wins.

This statistic clearly illustrates the dual nature of his career: Recording Academy recognition is connected both with Swedish House Mafia and with Axwell’s independent work as a remixer.
Why Axwell does not have a traditional solo album discography
Axwell’s solo career has never been built around the regular release of studio albums.

Therefore, presenting Axwell’s discography as an invented sequence of “solo albums” would be inaccurate. His career is much more precisely understood through individual singles, remixes and collective projects.

Production style
Axwell’s musical language changed noticeably throughout his career.
His early work was connected with techno, acid, funky house, soulful house and french touch. In the mid-2000s, vocal house became increasingly important, while progressive house and electro house later gained a stronger presence in his music.
One of the most consistent features remains his attention to melodic structure. Even in club tracks, Axwell often builds a composition around a harmonic idea capable of existing independently from the electronic climax.
His approach to vocals is equally characteristic. In Feel the Vibe, Watch the Sunrise, I Found U and later songs, the voice is not used merely as a short club sample but becomes a full part of the composition’s dramatic structure.
In his remixes, Axwell often rebuilds the source material far more deeply than in a typical dance rework. The best-known examples are Sweet Disposition and In My Mind; both remixes received Grammy nominations.
Axwell’s place in the Swedish electronic scene
Axwell’s significance extends beyond Swedish House Mafia. Even before the trio appeared, he had progressed from the computer and underground scene of the 1990s through funky and soulful house to the international club market.
