Property of Morgenshtern has been seized in Moscow (designated as a foreign agent). The court has prohibited any transactions involving the rapper’s real estate as part of a case concerning failure to fulfill the obligations of a foreign agent.
On January 18, 2025, it became known that the property of rapper Alisher Morgenshtern (designated as a foreign agent in the Russian Federation) had been seized. The court restricted the ability to carry out legal transactions involving a number of real estate assets, including:
- A land plot and a residential building in the Istra District of the Moscow Region.
- A non-residential building and three non-residential premises.
The seizure is related to a criminal case initiated in September 2024 under Article 330.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (failure to fulfill the obligations of a foreign agent), based on charges brought on January 17, 2025. Sanctions under this article предусматривают punishment of up to two years of imprisonment.
Lawyer’s Comment
The rapper’s lawyer, Sergey Zhorin, stated that neither Morgenshtern nor his defense team had received any official notification regarding the seizure of the property. According to him, the court’s decision is unfounded, and the defense intends to appeal it in accordance with the law.
Context of the Events
In May 2022, Morgenshtern was added to the register of foreign agents. In November 2021, the head of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation, Alexander Bastrykin, accused the artist of promoting drugs via social media, after which the rapper left Russia.
The current developments are viewed as a continuation of a long-standing conflict between the artist and the Russian authorities that began back in 2021. At the same time, final conclusions in the case can only be made after the completion of the court proceedings.
