В действительности это не отдельное стихотворение, а фрагмент из неоконченной поэмы Дмитрия Веневитинова "Евпраксия". Дописать поэму он так и е успел, так как умер 15 (27) марта 1827 в возрасте 21 лет. Работа над поэмой шла в конце 1826 в начале 1827 года. Существует несколько отрывков данной поэму. При жизни Д.В.Веневитинова текст не вышел в печать. Впервые отрывок опубликовали в посмертном издании в 1829 году "Сочинения Д. В. Веневитинова". В основе поэму лежит легенда о рязанском княжиче Фёдоре и его жене Евпраксии во время нашествия Батыя. По преданию, Евпраксия, чтобы не попасть в плен, бросилась со стены. В поэме Веневитинов рисует сцену: князь Фёдор в тёмном тереме, окружённый боярами, погружён в тяжёлые думы о судьбе своего народа. В литературоведении текст часто анализируют в контексте философских взглядов поэта. Д.В.Веневитинов был связан с кружком "любомудров", увлекался философией Шеллинга, и в "Евпраксии" сквозь исторический сюжет просвечивают размышления о судьбе человека и народа, о противостоянии личности и исторических обстоятельств.
