В период с 1813 по 1816 годов оно пять раз появлялось в печати: в "С.-Петербургском вестнике", "Сыне Отечества", "Пантеоне русской поэзии", "Собрании стихотворений, относящихся к 1812 году" и "Собрании образцовых сочинений и переводов в стихах". В основе стихотворения лежит рассказ Льва Васильевича Давыдова (брата поэта-партизана Дениса Давыдова), товарища К.Н.Батюшкова по армии. В годы Отечественной войны Л.В.Давыдов, как и К.Н.Батюшков, был адъютантом генерала Н.Н.Раевского. А.С.Пушкин в заметках на полях "Опытов" упоминал, что Л.В.Давыдов в плену у французов говорил одной женщине: "Rendez-moi mes frimas" ("Верните мне мои морозы").
