Жанна Агузарова - Biography and discography, all albums and songs

Жанна Агузарова

Zhanna Aguzarova (full name — Zhanna Khasanovna Aguzarova; born July 7, 1962) is a Soviet and Russian singer, songwriter and former vocalist of the band Bravo, and one of the most distinctive performers in Russian rock and pop music. Her name is primarily associated with the songs «Жёлтые ботинки», «Старый отель», «Кошки», «Синеглазый мальчик», «Ленинградский рок-н-ролл», «Будь со мной», «Мне хорошо рядом с тобой», «Звезда», «Марина», «Не упрекай» and «Королева Сансета». Aguzarova's story spans the Moscow rock-and-roll underground of the early 1980s, Bravo's nationwide popularity, independent songwriting, several years in the United States and her subsequent solo career.

As a musician, Aguzarova proved to be a far more substantial figure than the eccentric “Martian” image created around her might suggest. Her high, instantly recognisable voice became one of the main reasons for Bravo's early success, while after leaving the band she established herself as an independent songwriter capable of combining Russian urban romance, rock and roll, new wave, pop rock and the intonations of traditional song. This side of her work became especially clear on «Русский альбом», which differed sharply from Bravo's repertoire.

Childhood and conflicting accounts of her early biography

Zhanna Aguzarova was born in the settlement of Turtas, Tyumen Region. Her childhood and school years were connected with Novosibirsk Region. At the same time, accounts of the singer's earliest years do not fully agree: statements attributed to her mother have mentioned a different location and the year 1963. Aguzarova herself has never tried to document her biography in detail and throughout her career has willingly maintained an atmosphere of uncertainty around it.

After the eighth grade, she entered a theatre school in Novosibirsk, but her studies there were short-lived. In the early 1980s, Aguzarova moved to Moscow. Attempts to enter GITIS and the Gnessin music and pedagogical college were unsuccessful, and for a time she studied at a vocational school to become a painter. Far more important for her future was her introduction to Moscow's unofficial music scene.

Moscow in the early 1980s still had no developed official rock industry. Young bands performed at apartment concerts, private gatherings and semi-legal shows, circulated recordings on magnetic tape and existed almost entirely apart from the state-controlled pop establishment. It was in this environment that a singer appeared who called herself Ivonna Anders and already stood out through her behaviour, clothing and voice.

Meeting Evgeny Khavtan and the birth of Bravo

In 1983, Aguzarova met guitarist Evgeny Khavtan, who was forming a new band together with drummer Pavel Kuzin. The original line-up also included bassist Andrey Konusov and saxophonist Alexander Stepanenko. Aguzarova became the vocalist. The first rehearsals of the new group took place in the autumn of 1983.

It was with this line-up that the name Bravo appeared. The band deliberately differed from much of the Soviet rock scene. Instead of hard rock or complex progressive compositions, Khavtan drew on rock and roll of the 1950s and 1960s, beat music, rockabilly, twist and early rhythm & blues. Saxophone, guitar and a lively rhythm were combined with an unusual female voice.

Aguzarova proved almost ideal for this music. Her voice had a bright upper register and a very clear attack, allowing the vocal line to remain distinct even over dense instrumental arrangements. At the same time, she could sing with deliberate lightness and playfulness, largely avoiding the academicised manner typical of Soviet pop singers of the period.

On stage, she enhanced the musical effect through clothing, hairstyles and make-up. Bright colours, unusual headwear, men's suits, futuristic details and garments from different eras were combined without any attempt to maintain a single style. Later, this approach came to be seen as inseparable from Aguzarova herself, but originally it fitted the band's own aesthetic perfectly — a romantic idea of rock and roll, stilyagi fashion and freedom from everyday Soviet reality.

Arrest after a Bravo concert

Bravo's first performances took place without official professional status. On March 18, 1984, one of the band's concerts was interrupted by the police. Evgeny Khavtan later described this day as one of the key dates in Bravo's early history.

During an identity check, it emerged that the passport used by Aguzarova was forged. According to Khavtan's recollections, this was when the members of Bravo learned her real name. Kommersant reported that after her detention the singer was removed from Moscow and spent the following year and a half in Tyumen Region doing compulsory labour.

For the young band, the loss of its vocalist was a serious problem. Bravo continued for some time with other female singers, but after Aguzarova returned she once again took her place at the microphone.

The story of her arrest later became one of the most frequently retold episodes of her biography, but another point was more important for her musical career: after the enforced break, Aguzarova did not give up performing and returned at precisely the moment when the Soviet state's attitude towards rock music was beginning to change.

Bravo emerges from the underground

In the mid-1980s, the Soviet rock scene gained greater opportunities for official performances. Bravo joined the Moscow Rock Laboratory, took part in major festivals and later received professional status.

Alla Pugacheva played a significant role in helping the band reach a mass audience by supporting the young musicians. In 1986, Bravo with Aguzarova appeared on the television programme «Музыкальный ринг», after which the group's popularity spread far beyond Moscow's rock scene.

It was this period that created the classic repertoire of early Bravo.

«Жёлтые ботинки» combined a light rock-and-roll melody with Aguzarova's almost theatrical performance style. «Старый отель» became an example of the band's more romantic side. «Кошки» was built around a fluid melodic line and a lyrical style unusual for Soviet pop music. «Синеглазый мальчик» and «Ленинградский рок-н-ролл» directly embraced the aesthetics of early rock and roll. The same group of songs also includes «Медицинский институт», «Звёздный каталог», «Розы», «Открытие» and «Будь со мной».

Aguzarova was directly involved in writing some of these songs. In particular, she was a co-writer of «Жёлтые ботинки», «Открытие» and «Будь со мной», for which the music was written by Evgeny Khavtan.

This involvement is important for understanding her later solo career. Aguzarova was not simply a striking interpreter of Khavtan's material: even within Bravo, she was gradually gaining experience of songwriting herself.

The album «Ансамбль „Браво“»

In 1987, the Melodiya label released the first official full-length record by the band featuring Zhanna Aguzarova's voice. Today, this material is also distributed under the title «Жанна Агузарова и Браво».

For Soviet audiences, the record had particular significance. Many Bravo songs had already been copied from tape to tape for several years, but an official release gave them a completely different scale of distribution.

The recording preserved the combination of elements that made early Bravo unique: Khavtan's clean guitar sound, saxophone, straightforward rock-and-roll rhythm and Aguzarova's voice, which sounded both modern and reminiscent of pop singers from much earlier decades.

It was precisely this combination that allowed the songs to outlive the era in which they appeared. They cannot be fully classified as Soviet pop, traditional rock or a simple 1950s revival. Bravo created its own retro universe, and Aguzarova became its first and most unusual voice.

Leaving Bravo

In 1988, Zhanna Aguzarova finally left Bravo's main line-up and concentrated on her solo career. This followed a difficult period in the band's internal relationships: the singer had already left briefly in 1986, but then returned and took part in recordings and tours with the classic line-up.

Her departure did not mean a complete break with Bravo. In later years, Aguzarova repeatedly returned to the band's songs, participated in anniversary programmes and continued to perform the early repertoire at her solo concerts.

For Bravo itself, the change of vocalist marked the beginning of a new chapter. After several transitional line-ups, the band's most successful next period became associated with Valery Syutkin. However, it was the recordings with Aguzarova that established Bravo's first classic image.

The beginning of her solo career

After leaving Bravo, the singer did not attempt to reproduce the band's earlier repertoire under her own name.

In 1989, she presented solo compositions on «Музыкальный ринг», including «Звезда», «Марина» and «Незабудка». This material already showed a noticeable change in her musical language.

The rock-and-roll momentum of Bravo gave way to freer song structures. Russian folk intonations, urban romance, acoustic instruments and slower compositions became more prominent.

At the same time, Aguzarova decided to obtain a professional music education. In 1990, she graduated from the folk singing department of the M. M. Ippolitov-Ivanov Moscow Music College.

For a singer who had already achieved nationwide fame, this was an unusual step. She effectively returned to systematic training only after becoming a well-known performer.

«Русский альбом»

The central work of Aguzarova's first solo period was «Русский альбом», recorded around the turn of the 1980s and 1990s and released in the early 1990s. Digital services currently carry a 2019 reissue, which means the date shown in modern catalogues does not reflect when the material was originally created.

The title accurately conveys the concept of the record.

Whereas Bravo mainly drew on American and European rock and roll, beat music and urban retro aesthetics, Aguzarova moved in the opposite direction. She began searching for her own contemporary form of Russian song.

The album included «Мне хорошо рядом с тобой», «Вернись ко мне», «Орёл», «Марина», «Звезда», «Зимушка», «Соколов», «Прикосновение к Есенину», «Индустрия», «Один поцелуй моряка», «Луч» and other works.

The most important composition on the record is «Мне хорошо рядом с тобой», written by Aguzarova herself. It makes especially clear that her solo style was not simply a continuation of Bravo. The melody moves much more freely, while the voice ceases to function as one element within a tight rock-and-roll ensemble and instead becomes the centre of the composition.

«Зимушка» draws on Russian folk imagery. «Марина» and «Звезда» are closer to singer-songwriter-oriented pop and rock, while «Прикосновение к Есенину» directly engages with the Russian poetic tradition.

On this material, Aguzarova makes much broader use of the lower part of her range, sustained notes and free phrasing. Whereas in Bravo one of her defining features was the precision with which she fitted short rock-and-roll rhythms, on the solo record her voice begins to exist almost independently of them.

This is why «Русский альбом» occupies a special place in her discography. It is the work that most convincingly demonstrates that Aguzarova's independent musical identity extends far beyond songs written by Evgeny Khavtan.

Moving to the United States

In 1991, Aguzarova moved to Los Angeles. The American period of her life is surrounded by many stories, some of which are difficult to verify independently. What is reliably known is that she continued making music, performed and collaborated with Vasily Shumov, leader of the band «Центр», who was then living in the United States.

The move was a logical continuation of her interest in American music culture. Rock and roll, rockabilly, early rhythm & blues and the visual language of mid-20th-century America had already been present in Aguzarova's work during the Bravo years. In the United States, however, she did not attempt to build a conventional career as a Russian émigré singer.

Instead, her next major project became an experimental collaboration with Shumov.

Nineteen Ninety's

In 1993, the album Nineteen Ninety's was recorded and released in the United States in collaboration with Vasily Shumov. The compositions for the project were written by the leader of «Центр».

Musically, the record differs noticeably both from Bravo and from «Русский альбом».

Shumov brought the aesthetics of new wave, electronic music and Moscow post-punk into the material. Aguzarova found herself in a colder, more experimental environment in which her voice was used differently from a traditional song arrangement.

The release demonstrates one of the singer's main qualities: her timbre can exist convincingly within very different musical systems. It remains equally recognisable over Bravo's rock-and-roll guitar, Russian acoustic song and Shumov's synthetic arrangements.

In the same 1993, Aguzarova appeared with Bravo again, taking part in a major anniversary tour marking the band's tenth anniversary. According to Kommersant, the programme included 32 concerts across countries of the former Soviet Union.

Return and a selective public life

In the second half of the 1990s, Aguzarova appeared in Russia increasingly often and eventually effectively returned to performing in her home country.

By then, however, her career model differed fundamentally from the standard Russian pop industry. She rarely gave interviews, took almost no part in constant television promotion and could disappear from public view for long periods.

Interest in her nevertheless remained strong.

The reason was not eccentricity alone. By this time, Aguzarova had already developed a repertoire belonging to two different musical generations: classic Bravo songs and material from «Русский альбом». In concert, they blended naturally within the same programme.

During the 2000s, these two bodies of work indeed became the foundation of her performances. Kommersant noted her regular Moscow club concerts between 2003 and 2010, where she performed material from «Русский альбом» alongside early Bravo songs.

Back2Future

In 2003, the release Back2Future appeared. It brought together material from different periods and is not usually regarded as an entirely new studio chapter in the same way as «Русский альбом». It included «Прогулка», «Не упрекай», «Майя», «Плоскогорье Лэй», «Каждый», «День за днём», «Цифры», «Синий платочек» and other recordings.

The title itself fits Aguzarova's relationship with time particularly well. Songs in her discography regularly move from one era to another: material created many years before official release may receive a new arrangement, while a live recording may appear alongside studio tracks.

For this reason, a traditional chronological model of discography applies to Aguzarova only partially. The year an album was released does not necessarily mean that all of its songs were created immediately before publication.

Stage image and the “Martian” mythology

Almost no biography of Aguzarova avoids her stories about space, Mars and her own extraterrestrial origins. For decades, the singer maintained this language in her rare interviews, deliberately creating a fantastical biography around herself.

However, taking the “Martian” theme literally as an explanation of her popularity would be too superficial.

The image works because it extends the music itself. Early Bravo created an alternative reality in which Moscow of the 1980s could coexist with rock-and-roll America of the 1950s. As a solo artist, Aguzarova added futurism, Russian folklore, vintage fashion and fantastical imagery.

Her stage style almost never aimed simply to be fashionable. On the contrary, she deliberately combined elements that might appear incompatible within conventional ideas of taste: shiny fabrics and folk details, punk hairstyles and evening dresses, men's suits and space-themed accessories.

As a result, her image never became tied to any single fashion of the 1980s or 1990s.

Zhanna Aguzarova's voice

Aguzarova's most important musical quality is the recognisability of her timbre.

Her voice is distinguished by a bright, almost metallic upper register, extremely clear diction and the ability to move quickly from a light conversational tone to an open, powerful sound.

In early Bravo, rhythmic precision is especially important. Aguzarova rarely overloads lines with melisma or ornamentation. She articulates the lyrics clearly, allowing the vocal to work effectively within rock-and-roll rhythms.

At the same time, the singer has a pronounced theatrical quality. The same word can sound serious, ironic or almost caricatured depending on the character of the song. This is especially clear in «Жёлтые ботинки», «Кошки» and «Синеглазый мальчик».

Her solo music reveals another side of the voice. «Мне хорошо рядом с тобой», «Звезда», «Марина» and «Не упрекай» require longer phrasing and a more emotionally open delivery. There is less of a playful mask here and considerably more traditional vocal melodicism.

This combination of technical recognisability and acting-like delivery explains why Aguzarova's voice is almost impossible to confuse with that of other singers of her generation.

Songwriter

Her solo career also changed the perception of Aguzarova as merely an interpreter.

She wrote the music and lyrics for «Мне хорошо рядом с тобой» and «Зимушка», and participated in the creation of several other works, including «Орёл», «Марина», «Звезда», «Незабудка», «Индустрия» and «Луч».

Her own songs rarely rely on complex compositional structures. The foundation is usually a strong melody that can easily be separated from any particular arrangement.

This is why many of Aguzarova's songs can sound completely different in concert while retaining their identity. A strong melodic core allows the instruments, tempo and character of the accompaniment to change without losing the song itself.

«Королева Сансета»

In 2020, Aguzarova unexpectedly released the digital album «Королева Сансета» — her first major release under her own name in many years. It contains 12 tracks.

However, it would be inaccurate to describe it as entirely new material.

The recordings were created in different years. The earliest song included, «Не упрекай», dates back to the turn of the 1980s and 1990s, while other tracks were recorded later in Moscow, Saint Petersburg, London, Stockholm and Los Angeles.

The album included «Королева Сансета», «Ты мой любимый», «Далеко», «Не упрекай», «Майа», «Над тобою ярко горит звезда», «Счастье придёт», «Свободная земля» and other works.

The title refers to Los Angeles' Sunset Boulevard and naturally extends the American part of the singer's biography. Musically, however, the release does not attempt to recreate one particular period of her life. Pop rock, electronic production, elements of new wave and Aguzarova's characteristic melodic language coexist within it.

It is precisely this unevenness that makes the release an interesting document: it is closer to an author-curated archive of several different periods than to an album recorded during a single studio session.

«Будь со мной»

In February 2021, another digital release appeared — «Будь со мной». The Apple Music version contains eight tracks, including «Путешествие», «Будь со мной», «Счастливая любовь», «Мама», «Синий троллейбус», «Не упрекай» and other recordings.

Like «Королева Сансета», this album does not consist exclusively of newly recorded studio material. It combines songs from different years with live recordings.

Particularly interesting is Aguzarova's interpretation of Bulat Okudzhava's «Синий троллейбус». Her choice of this song continues the line established on «Русский альбом», where she combined her own musical individuality with the broader Russian song and poetic tradition.

Return to large concerts

Despite long periods of silence, Aguzarova never left the stage completely.

In 2022, she gave a large solo concert at the Green Theatre at VDNKh in Moscow — her first performance on that scale in approximately seven years.

The programme once again brought together different parts of her career: Bravo songs, solo material and later works. This structure makes it possible to view the contemporary concert version of Aguzarova not as an artist living solely on nostalgia for the 1980s, but as a performer with an independent catalogue of her own.

In 2024, the singer received the special “Legend Beyond Time” award at the MUZ-TV Awards.

Her public activity nevertheless remains selective. Aguzarova does not maintain a constant flow of media appearances, rarely releases new music and does not organise her career around annual touring cycles. This distance has long become part of her position within Russian culture.

Musical style

Zhanna Aguzarova's work cannot be accurately described by a single genre.

The Bravo period is primarily associated with rock and roll, rockabilly, beat music, new wave and pop rock. At the same time, the band never aimed for a historically exact reproduction of American music of the 1950s. Retro elements were combined with Soviet urban song, saxophone and the aesthetics of Moscow new wave.

On «Русский альбом», the direction changes sharply. Elements of Russian folk song, romance, author's song, art rock and pop music emerge.

The American Nineteen Ninety's moves closer to new wave and experimental rock, while later recordings may use electronic production, pop rock and freer forms.

Across all these periods, however, three elements remain constant: the voice, a strong melodic foundation and a theatrical interpretation of the lyrics.

Aguzarova and Bravo: why this period remains important

Bravo has had several successful vocalists throughout its history, but the Aguzarova period occupies a separate place.

With Valery Syutkin, the band became one of the biggest Russian pop-rock groups of the early 1990s and created a new set of hits. But it was Aguzarova who participated in shaping Bravo's original musical language: female vocals, retro rock and roll, saxophone, vivid stage fashion and a sense of musical escape from the grey everyday reality of Soviet life.

This is why the band's early songs are now perceived both as part of Bravo's history and as Aguzarova's own classic repertoire.

She continues to perform them as a solo artist, while digital services often explicitly credit the performers as Bravo & Zhanna Aguzarova, emphasising the material's dual identity.

Zhanna Aguzarova's significance

Aguzarova occupies an unusual place in the history of Russian-language popular music. She did not build a huge discography, did not release albums every year and consciously remained outside constant television exposure for much of her career. Nevertheless, songs featuring her voice remain recognisable decades later.

Early Bravo is impossible to imagine without Aguzarova: it was her voice that helped transform the band's rock-and-roll stylisation into music with an identity of its own rather than a reconstruction of the past. At the same time, the solo «Русский альбом» proved that her artistic language extended far beyond the aesthetics of a single band.

Her unusual stage image further strengthened her individuality, but was never her only substance. Behind the bright costumes and stories about Mars is a performer with a rare timbre, an exact sense of rhythm and her own way of shaping melody.

The independence of her trajectory is particularly important. Aguzarova first proved too unusual for official Soviet pop culture, then became part of one of the country's most popular bands, left it at the height of its fame, recorded a solo album unexpectedly Russian in spirit, moved to Los Angeles and changed musical direction again together with Vasily Shumov. After returning, she effectively rejected the constant media presence normally expected of a pop artist.

For this reason, Zhanna Aguzarova's legacy is defined neither by the number of releases nor by a single historical era. «Жёлтые ботинки» and «Старый отель» represent Russian rock and roll of the 1980s, «Мне хорошо рядом с тобой» and «Звезда» represent her independent songwriting period, while her later material continues to unite songs from different decades into a single personal mythology. Throughout this entire journey, one thing remains unchanged — a voice that is difficult to mistake for anyone else's.
