Tapolsky

DJ Tapolsky (real name — Anatolii Topolskyi; born September 26, 1976, Bohuslav, Kyiv Oblast, Ukraine) is a Ukrainian DJ, music producer and event organizer whose name is closely associated with the development of drum & bass in Ukraine. His career spans several distinct stages of Ukrainian electronic culture: the club scene of the 1990s, radio broadcasting, major drum & bass events of the 2000s, original music production, international labels and a new creative period shaped by the Russo-Ukrainian war.

Tapolsky has done far more than simply play drum & bass for many years. His importance to the genre in Ukraine comes from simultaneously working as a DJ, radio host, event organizer and producer. His festival Ideologiya brought prominent representatives of the international drum & bass scene to Kyiv for a decade, while the Time2Bass program introduced Ukrainian radio audiences to music that rarely appeared on mainstream stations. Later, the joint project Tapolsky & VovKING established him as a producer on international labels including Technique Recordings, PROGRAM and Bad Taste Recordings.

Bohuslav, Dnipro and the first years behind the decks

Anatolii Topolskyi was born on September 26, 1976, in Bohuslav, Kyiv Oblast. His father served in the military, while his mother worked as an accountant. The future DJ Tapolsky began his professional relationship with music before Ukraine's club industry had developed into anything resembling its modern form.

In 1995, he began working at the Mriya radio station in Dnipro, and from 1996 onward he regularly performed at clubs and parties. In 2000, Topolskyi moved to Kyiv. These dates describe the beginning of his career more accurately than the frequently repeated statement that he simply “started his career in the late 1990s.”

It would also be inaccurate to associate Tapolsky's earliest performances exclusively with drum & bass. When discussing a surviving cassette of his “Instantsiya” mix from 1998, the artist later noted that the recording came from a period before he began playing drum & bass. His transition into the genre was therefore part of the gradual formation of his musical identity rather than the starting point of his DJ career.

Moving to Kyiv and building the drum & bass scene

In the early 2000s, Kyiv became the main center of Tapolsky's activity. Drum & bass already had listeners and several DJs in Ukraine, but it remained considerably less established than house, trance and other forms of electronic music in terms of clubs, radio exposure and major events.

Topolskyi became one of the people who consistently built an infrastructure around the genre — organizing parties, inviting international artists and creating a permanent meeting point for its audience.

One of his most important projects was the Ideologiya festival, held in Kyiv from 2003 to 2013. Organized by Anatolii Topolskyi, the event focused primarily on drum & bass. Over the years its lineups included Aphrodite, DJ SS, Spor, Noisia, Black Sun Empire, Counterstrike, Dieselboy and other internationally recognized artists. The history of Ideologiya has even been discussed in academic studies of Ukrainian electronic music as a notable example of a specialized drum & bass festival in the country.

The project ended in 2013. For Tapolsky, this marked the close of a decade-long period as a major event organizer, but he continued working as both a DJ and producer.

Time2Bass and KISS FM

Tapolsky's contribution to the development of drum & bass was not limited to clubs.

On the Ukrainian radio station KISS FM, he hosted the Time2Bass show dedicated to drum & bass. According to available biographical information, his work on the program lasted for around 11 years.

This was particularly important for the genre because the show regularly introduced listeners not only to well-known tracks but also to music from the international scene that was largely absent from mainstream radio programming.

Three roles therefore became closely connected in Tapolsky's career: club DJ, event organizer and a broadcaster who consistently brought drum & bass to a wider audience.

From DJing to original production

Although Tapolsky was long associated primarily with DJ sets and event organization, original music production gradually became an important part of his career.

The most prominent example was Tapolsky & VovKING, a project created with Ukrainian electronic producer VovKING. The duo moved beyond the local market and released drum & bass through established international labels.

In 2017, PROGRAM — the sister label of the legendary British imprint RAM Records — released Who's That! / Etude No. 5 and Button / Burn Em Down.

Another important partner was the British label Technique Recordings. In 2018 it released Modern Innovation EP and The 2nd EP. That same year the duo issued Schizoid / Tomahawk through Bad Taste Recordings, followed in 2019 by Minimal / Bounce on the same label.

“Енергія” and reaching beyond the drum & bass audience

One of the most notable Ukrainian collaborations from this period was “Енергія”, recorded in 2017 by Kurgan & Agregat featuring Tapolsky and VovKING.

The track was released on June 18, 2017 and was accompanied by a music video. Anatolii Topolskyi is credited among the song's creators.

The collaboration was also significant because it connected Ukraine's electronic club scene with a new generation of alternative and hip-hop culture without requiring Tapolsky to abandon his electronic foundations.

Tapolsky's musical language

Drum & bass remains at the center of Tapolsky's work, although his music has evolved alongside the genre itself over the decades.

His DJ sets and original productions include both the harder, more technological side of drum & bass and melodic material close to liquid funk. Rather than remaining tied to a single subgenre, he is known for shaping the dynamics of longer sets, moving from atmospheric and vocal passages toward considerably denser dancefloor material.

This range became particularly visible in his later work. Tracks such as “Відбій тривоги” and “Де сходить сонце?” are considerably more emotional and melodic than some of the club-oriented Tapolsky & VovKING releases issued through Technique or Bad Taste.

For this reason, defining Tapolsky exclusively through neurofunk or liquid funk would be too restrictive. Drum & bass remains the most accurate description of his core musical language, within which he freely changes density, mood and purpose.

Military service

The military chapter of Anatolii Topolskyi's biography began long before Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

In September 2014, he participated in the charity festival “Так, я люблю Україну” at Kyiv's Sentrum venue, organized in support of Ukrainian servicemen.

In 2015, Topolskyi volunteered for military service. He served as a mortar operator with Ukraine's 72nd Separate Mechanized Brigade and was deployed to the combat zone in eastern Ukraine.

After Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022, Tapolsky again served in the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Ukrainian media were reporting on his military service by the spring of that year, at the same time as he continued releasing music.

The musician later spoke about serving with the 47th Brigade and about fellow soldiers with whom he worked on the Avdiivka axis. After an extended period in combat units, he returned to Kyiv and continued his military service with the Cultural Forces project, something Topolskyi also discussed through his official channel.

“Відбій тривоги” and music after February 24, 2022

Even while serving in the military, Tapolsky continued to create music whenever circumstances allowed.

In January 2022, shortly before the full-scale invasion, he released a drum & bass remix of “Місто весни” by Okean Elzy and Odyn v Kanoe. Official Spotify data dates the release to January 21, 2022.

After February 24, the character of his music changed.

In April 2022, Tapolsky released “Відбій тривоги”, a track incorporating the recorded voice of then-presidential adviser Oleksii Arestovych and the phrase announcing the end of an air raid alert, which had become instantly recognizable to Ukrainians. The musician said that revenue from streams would be donated to one of the units of the 72nd Brigade.

The track became one of the notable Ukrainian electronic releases from the first months of the full-scale war and was included by Ukrainian music publication SLUKH in its selection of the country's best songs from the first half of 2022.

“Кохались”, “Де сходить сонце?” and a new period

In 2023, Tapolsky released “Кохались” with singer Inaia. He later explained that he had created the track while serving in the military after his daughter gave him a laptop and headphones, and that he intended to direct revenue from the recording toward the needs of his unit.

Several significant releases followed in 2024.

On March 15, he released “Де сходить сонце?”, a melodic drum & bass track that Mixmag Ukraine later included in its selection of the year's best Ukrainian tracks. Anatolii Topolskyi is credited as the composer in official music databases.

It was followed by “Kyiv - Kramatorsk”, whose title directly connects two places that became part of the artist's life during the war. Both tracks appear in Tapolsky's official Apple Music catalog.

Tapolsky and Pavlo Vyshebaba — “Плюс (+)”

One of the most meaningful works from this new period was “Плюс (+)”, released in 2024 with Ukrainian poet and serviceman Pavlo Vyshebaba.

The track combines Vyshebaba's poetry with Tapolsky's drum & bass production. Its title refers to the simple “+” message soldiers at the front often send to their loved ones to confirm that they are alive and safe.

The track was accompanied by a music video featuring Daria Plakhtii. The artists announced that 100% of revenue from streams and video views would be donated to the Association of Families of Azovstal Defenders.

The collaboration later moved to the stage. In August 2024, Vyshebaba performed his poetry at Kyiv's Landscape Alley accompanied by electronic music from Tapolsky. The event also raised funds for the 68th and 59th Brigades of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Burning Man 2024 and the I'm Fine installation

One of the most unusual performances of DJ Tapolsky's career took place at Burning Man 2024 in Nevada's Black Rock Desert.

This was not a conventional festival DJ set. Topolskyi joined the Ukrainian art project I'm Fine — a large-scale installation by artist Oleksii Sai and Vitalii Deineha's team, constructed from road signs, solar panels, satellite dishes and other war-damaged objects collected from liberated Ukrainian territories.

For the performance, Tapolsky recorded answers from his mother, friends and fellow servicemen to the questions “How are you?”, “What do you want most?” and “What do you dream about?”, then incorporated their voices into the set. An air raid siren linked to actual alerts in Ukraine was also heard near the installation.

The performance brought together two strands of his biography that had once existed separately: the electronic music scene and his personal experience of war. Music was no longer used solely for the dancefloor but as part of an artistic account of life in Ukraine during wartime.

Continuing his musical work

After transferring to Cultural Forces, Tapolsky once again had more opportunities to make music and perform. Many of his sets also continued to serve a charitable purpose, helping raise money for drones, vehicles and equipment for Ukrainian military units.

In October 2025, he released “ММД” together with Alloise. In his Apple Music catalog, it is the most recent standalone Tapolsky release included in this discography.

After a long period during which military service had largely displaced his music career, Tapolsky did not simply attempt to recreate his earlier club years. His newer work combines drum & bass with the Ukrainian language, personal wartime experience and collaborations with contemporary Ukrainian writers and performers.

Selected discography

Tapolsky's career has never been built around a conventional sequence of full-length solo albums. Singles, EPs, remixes and collaborative releases have always played a much more important role in his catalog.

A separate place in the catalog belongs to “Енергія” by Kurgan & Agregat featuring Tapolsky and VovKING, released in 2017. The international catalog of Tapolsky & VovKING also includes releases on PROGRAM, Technique Recordings, Bad Taste Recordings and High Tea Music.

DJ Tapolsky's place in Ukrainian electronic music

Tapolsky's status in the history of Ukrainian drum & bass cannot be measured by a single popular track or by the number of records he has released.

He began working professionally with music in the mid-1990s, when Ukraine's modern club industry was only beginning to take shape. By the following decade, his work already included specialist radio and his own festival, which brought artists from the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, the United States and South Africa to Ukraine. Later, Tapolsky & VovKING began releasing music through international drum & bass labels, shifting that connection with the global scene from bringing foreign artists into Ukraine to exporting Ukrainian music abroad.

It is equally significant that this story did not end with the era of large club festivals in the 2000s. At TEDxKyiv in 2018, Topolskyi spoke about the need for a modern DJ not merely to play music but to understand the time and life unfolding around them. Later events gave that idea an entirely different meaning.

Military service did not become a separate decorative chapter in his public image: it substantially changed both the themes and the circumstances of his music. “Відбій тривоги”, “Кохались”, “Де сходить сонце?”, “Плюс (+)”, the set beside the I'm Fine installation and his charity performances all emerged from the experience of an artist who had himself served in the Ukrainian military.

Minatrix.FM editorial opinion

DJ Tapolsky is more than just a name on a lineup — he represents an entire era of the Ukrainian electronic scene.

He has gone from a passionate enthusiast in the 1990s to one of the key figures of the genre while preserving his independence, depth and respect for drum & bass culture.

His story demonstrates how music can function not only as entertainment but also as a form of identity, resistance and cultural memory.

Within the context of today's scene, Tapolsky remains not merely an artist but a keeper of the history and spirit of drum & bass culture in Ukraine.
