Steve Aoki is an American DJ, music producer, songwriter and founder of the Dim Mak label. His full name is Steven Hiroyuki Aoki. He was born on 30 November 1977 in Miami, Florida, and grew up in Newport Beach, California. His discography spans electro house, big room, EDM, dance-pop, hip-hop, trap, punk, hard dance and other styles, while one of the defining features of his career has been his constant collaboration with artists outside the electronic music scene.
Aoki is known not only for his own releases, but also for his highly interactive live shows, the Dim Mak label, the Neon Future and HiROQUEST album series, and collaborations with Linkin Park, BTS, Louis Tomlinson, Maluma, Daddy Yankee, Lil Uzi Vert, Snoop Dogg, blink-182 and many other artists.
Early years
Steve Aoki was born into a Japanese-American family. His father, Hiroaki «Rocky» Aoki, was an entrepreneur and founder of the Benihana restaurant chain, while his mother, Chizuru Kobayashi, was primarily involved in raising the children. The future musician spent his childhood in Newport Beach in Southern California.
As a teenager, Aoki became interested in punk and hardcore. He played in bands, independently released recordings and actively participated in the DIY scene. The musician has repeatedly stressed that punk culture shaped his understanding of independent work, concert organisation and interaction with the music community.
Aoki enrolled at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), where he studied sociology. During his university years, he organised concerts directly at his house and helped independent bands release music.
Founding Dim Mak
In 1996, while still a student, Steve Aoki founded the independent label Dim Mak Records. The name was chosen in honour of Bruce Lee, whom Aoki had admired since childhood: dim mak is a common name for the legendary «death touch» technique associated with martial arts mythology.
Initially, Dim Mak was closely connected with punk, hardcore, indie rock and the alternative scene. Over time, its catalogue expanded significantly into electronic music. The label released early or important work by Bloc Party, The Kills, The Bloody Beetroots, The Chainsmokers, Zedd, Diplo, Deorro, Keys N Krates and other artists.
Dim Mak retained its independent status and gradually developed from a small student project into an international music brand combining a record label, live events and clothing. In 2026, the company celebrated its 30th anniversary.
Transition to DJing and electronic music
In the early stage of his career, Aoki was primarily involved in the independent rock and hardcore scene as a musician, promoter and label owner. During the 2000s, he became increasingly active as a DJ and gradually moved toward electronic dance music.
One of his early notable releases was the 2007 mix compilation Pillowface and His Airplane Chronicles. By the end of the decade, Steve Aoki’s name was appearing more frequently on club and festival lineups, while his musical direction was moving toward electro house and EDM.
This was also the period when Aoki’s distinctive live persona began to take shape. Rather than remaining detached behind the DJ booth, he aimed to interact directly with the audience — going out into the crowd, using inflatable boats for crowd surfing and gradually turning his performances into full-scale shows.
The cake-throwing tradition
One of the best-known features of Steve Aoki’s concerts is throwing cakes into the audience.
Aoki has said that he began experimenting with this element around 2011. A video of him throwing a cake at a concertgoer spread widely online, after which «caking» gradually became a permanent part of his performances.
The cakes are not used randomly: the concerts have a separate technical rider regulating how they are made and what consistency they should have. Over time, the practice became so recognisable that it became firmly associated with the artist’s stage image.
Wonderland
On 10 January 2012, Steve Aoki released his first solo studio album, Wonderland.
The album clearly reflects Aoki’s characteristic approach to collaborations. It features Rivers Cuomo, Wynter Gordon, LMFAO, NERVO, Kid Cudi, Travis Barker, Lil Jon, Chiddy Bang, will.i.am and other artists. Among the best-known tracks from this period are Ladi Dadi, Livin' My Love, Cudi the Kid, Earthquakey People and Tornado.
Wonderland was nominated for a Grammy Award in the Best Dance/Electronic Album category. It was Steve Aoki’s first Grammy nomination.
No Beef, Boneless and A Light That Never Comes
The early 2010s brought Aoki a series of tracks that became central to his festival catalogue.
No Beef with Afrojack and vocals by Miss Palmer was released before Wonderland and became one of the most recognisable electro-house tracks of the period.
In 2013, Steve Aoki, Chris Lake and Tujamo released Boneless. A vocal version, Delirious (Boneless) featuring Kid Ink, followed later.
His collaboration with Linkin Park became particularly notable during the same period. Their joint track A Light That Never Comes was released in 2013 and appeared on Linkin Park’s remix album Recharged. The collaboration continued with the heavier Darker Than Blood, included on Neon Future II.
Neon Future
In 2014, Steve Aoki launched the conceptual Neon Future series.
The first album, Neon Future I, combined electronic music with ideas related to technological development and transhumanism. The album featured will.i.am, Fall Out Boy, Machine Gun Kelly, Flux Pavilion, Luke Steele, Waka Flocka Flame and other artists; it also incorporated appearances by futurists Ray Kurzweil and Aubrey de Grey.
In 2015, Neon Future II followed. Guests included Linkin Park, Snoop Lion, Rivers Cuomo, NERVO, Walk Off the Earth and Matthew Koma. The album continued the themes of technology and the future while becoming even more stylistically diverse.
The series later continued with Neon Future III in 2018 and Neon Future IV in 2020. In total, Aoki released four full-length instalments of Neon Future.
Just Hold On
In December 2016, Steve Aoki released Just Hold On with Louis Tomlinson.
The track became one of the most prominent pop-crossover releases in the producer’s discography and expanded his audience beyond the traditional EDM scene. It also pointed toward a direction that would later become particularly noticeable in Aoki’s work: combining an electronic foundation with a fully developed pop-song structure.
Steve Aoki Presents Kolony
In 2017, Aoki released Steve Aoki Presents Kolony — an album that moved much more strongly into hip-hop and trap.
The record features Lil Uzi Vert, Lil Yachty, Migos, 2 Chainz, Gucci Mane, T-Pain, DVBBS, Yellow Claw and other performers. Key tracks include Night Call, Lit, Without U and Been Ballin. DJ Mag also highlighted Kolony as a significant shift by Aoki toward collaborations with hip-hop artists.
BTS
A particularly important place in Steve Aoki’s international catalogue is occupied by his collaboration with BTS.
In 2017, he produced MIC Drop (Steve Aoki Remix). The success of the release led to further collaboration.
In 2018, Waste It on Me was released — the first fully English-language BTS song recorded as part of a Steve Aoki project. Their collaboration later continued with The Truth Untold, on which Aoki contributed to the production. The artist’s official biography lists BTS among his key international collaborations.
Other international collaborations
Much of Steve Aoki’s career has been built around collaborative projects, with his partners extending far beyond the EDM world.
He has released music with Maluma, Daddy Yankee, Elvis Crespo, Sting, SHAED, Alan Walker, Louis Tomlinson, blink-182, Machine Gun Kelly, Lil Uzi Vert, 2 Chainz, Snoop Dogg, Linkin Park and many other artists.
In 2018, he released the Latin collaboration Azukita with Daddy Yankee, Elvis Crespo and Play-N-Skillz.
In 2019, he released Are You Lonely with Alan Walker and ISÁK, as well as 2 in a Million with Sting and SHAED.
This model became an important part of Aoki’s work: rather than developing around one stable electronic genre, his catalogue is built around the combination of EDM production with pop, rock, hip-hop, Latin, K-pop and other scenes.
HiROQUEST: Genesis
On 16 September 2022, Steve Aoki released HiROQUEST: Genesis — a new conceptual album connected not only with music, but also with a fantasy universe created by the artist.
The album contains 25 tracks. Contributors include Taking Back Sunday, MOD SUN, grandson, Timmy Trumpet, DJ Aligator, HRVY and other artists.
Aoki’s return to the punk and alternative influences of his youth is particularly evident here: electronic music sits alongside pop-punk and rock, while the project itself was expanded beyond the album format.
In 2023, Aoki and writer Jim Krueger released the graphic novel HiROQUEST: The Graphic Novel, continuing the story of the fictional world they had created.
HiROQUEST 2: Double Helix
On 17 November 2023, the second instalment, HiROQUEST 2: Double Helix, was released.
The album contains 23 tracks and continues the genre-mixing approach of the first instalment. Contributors include KAAZE and John Martin on Won't Forget This Time, Greeicy on Cartagena, Regard and mazie on New York, ERNEST on Us, as well as JJ Lin.
HiROQUEST 3: Paragon
On 27 June 2025, Steve Aoki released HiROQUEST 3: Paragon — the ninth studio album in his discography and the third main instalment of HiROQUEST.
On Paragon, Aoki focused primarily on contemporary dance music while retaining his characteristic approach to international collaborations. The album combines EDM with techno, Afrobeat, Amapiano and dance-pop. Contributors include NE-YO, Lil Jon, KIDDO, Moonchild Sanelly, Major League DJz and other artists.
Notable tracks from this period include Heavenly Hell with NE-YO, Get Lower with Lil Jon, Drive with KIDDO and Visa with Major League DJz.
Musical style
Steve Aoki cannot be accurately defined by a single electronic genre.
The largest part of his international breakthrough came during the period when electro house, big room and festival EDM were at their peak in the late 2000s and first half of the 2010s. His discography, however, is considerably broader and includes house, hard dance, trap, hip-hop, dance-pop, Latin, pop-punk and elements of techno.
It would therefore be inaccurate to describe Aoki as a «progressive house pioneer». His role in electronic music history is primarily connected with the development of crossover festival EDM, active genre blending and the expansion of collaborations between the electronic scene and artists from pop, rock and hip-hop.
This approach remains characteristic of Aoki’s current music: the official Paragon album spans EDM, techno, Afrobeat and Amapiano.
Concerts and festivals
Steve Aoki is known for an exceptionally intensive touring schedule. Before the pandemic, he performed as many as 250 shows per year, while in subsequent years the figure remained above 200 dates annually.
Over the years, he has performed at Tomorrowland, Ultra Music Festival, Electric Daisy Carnival, Coachella, Lollapalooza, Fuji Rock Festival and other major festivals.
In 2012, Aoki received a Guinness World Record as the Most Traveled Musician in a Single Calendar Year.
Cakes, crowd surfing on inflatable boats and constant interaction with the audience became established elements of his concert format. Behind the theatrical presentation, however, remains a conventional DJ set built around his own catalogue, festival edits and current dance music.
DJ Mag Top 100 DJs
Steve Aoki has appeared in the DJ Mag Top 100 DJs poll for many years.
In 2013, he ranked No. 8; in 2014 and 2015, No. 10; in 2016, he climbed to No. 7; and in 2017 he ranked No. 9. In 2018, he was No. 11, returned to No. 10 in 2019 and ranked No. 9 in 2020.
In 2022, Aoki climbed back to No. 7 and became the highest-ranked North American DJ of that year. In the 2025 ranking, he placed No. 14.
Therefore, the claim that he spent «more than ten consecutive years in the Top 10» is inaccurate: Aoki did place in the Top 10 many times, but in some years he ranked outside it.
Aoki Foundation
In 2012, Steve Aoki founded The Aoki Foundation.
The foundation’s primary focus is supporting research into brain science, regenerative medicine and technologies related to health preservation and extending healthy, active longevity. Particular attention is paid to research into neurodegenerative diseases.
The foundation also supports selected humanitarian causes, including disaster relief, initiatives related to developmental disabilities and animal welfare.
It would therefore be inaccurate to describe the Aoki Foundation primarily as an environmental organisation: its central mission is specifically connected with brain science and regenerative medicine.
Fashion, technology and other projects
Outside music, Aoki develops Dim Mak Collection, a clothing line that grew out of the label’s broader aesthetic. The brand has released its own collections and collaborated with other labels and cultural franchises. In 2017, Dim Mak Collection was presented at New York Fashion Week: Men's.
In 2020, Dim Mak En Fuego was launched as a separate imprint focused on Latin music.
In the early 2020s, Aoki also became highly active in NFTs and Web3. One of the projects was A0K1VERSE — a digital community combining NFTs with access to virtual and physical experiences connected with the artist.
In 2019, he released the autobiographical book BLUE: The Color of Noise, while the Netflix documentary I'll Sleep When I'm Dead received a Grammy nomination for Best Music Film in 2017.
Personal life
Older Steve Aoki biographies still often describe him as the husband of Australian model Tiernan Cowling. That information is outdated.
In 2024, Aoki married Sasha Sofine, and in summer 2025 the couple welcomed their first child, a son.
2026 and the 30th anniversary of Dim Mak
In 2026, one of the central themes of Steve Aoki’s activities was the 30th anniversary of Dim Mak. A dedicated tour, special events and festival programmes were organised to mark the anniversary. In July, Dim Mak hosted its own stage at Tomorrowland for the fifth time.
Aoki’s musical output also remained highly active. On 6 March 2026, he and the Goo Goo Dolls released an electronic reinterpretation of their song Iris.
On 15 May, he released Young with BIA and Destroy Lonely, produced with contributions from Stargate. The track had first been premiered during Aoki’s performance at Ultra Music Festival in Miami.
On 24 July, On My Own was released — a collaboration between Steve Aoki and Dutch techno producer Reinier Zonneveld featuring vocals by Darla Jade. The track was presented on the anniversary Dim Mak stage at Tomorrowland and continued Aoki’s movement toward harder contemporary club music.
Awards and recognition
Steve Aoki has received two Grammy Award nominations and has not yet won the award.
His first nomination was for Wonderland, nominated in the Best Dance/Electronic Album category at the 55th Grammy Awards. The second was for the documentary I'll Sleep When I'm Dead, nominated for Best Music Film at the 59th ceremony.
Therefore, describing Aoki as a «Grammy winner» is incorrect — the accurate description is two-time Grammy nominee.

Steve Aoki today
Steve Aoki continues to combine his work as a DJ and producer with running Dim Mak. His catalogue continues to develop in several directions at once — from festival electronic music and techno to pop, hip-hop, rock and Latin collaborations. Following the release of his ninth studio album, HiROQUEST 3: Paragon, in 2025, new material continued to arrive in 2026 alongside celebrations marking Dim Mak’s 30th anniversary.
