Sammy Virji - Biography and discography, all albums and songs

Sammy Virji

Sammy Virji is a British DJ and music producer and one of the most prominent figures on the contemporary UK garage scene. His music brings together garage, bassline, 2-step, speed garage, house, grime, R&B and hip-hop. Virji’s production is defined by elastic grooves, powerful low end, bright vocal hooks and melodic arrangements.

He began releasing music in the mid-2010s, gradually building an audience within the British bassline and garage scenes. Wider international success came later: his 2023 DJ Mag HQ set dramatically expanded his audience, after which Virji became a regular presence at major festivals and international venues. In the years that followed, he collaborated with Skepta, Flowdan, Giggs, Champion, salute and other artists, and in 2025 released his second album, Same Day Cleaning.

Childhood and early musical interests

Sammy Virji grew up in Witney, near Oxford. Music was part of his life from an early age: his father was involved in music, while Sammy began playing guitar and piano at a young age and developed an interest in creating his own tracks.

After finishing school, he enrolled at Newcastle University, where he studied biology and initially considered pursuing further medical education. However, it was during his university years that the foundations of his future music career were established.

Newcastle and discovering bassline

While studying in Newcastle, Virji immersed himself in the city’s club scene. One particularly important experience was seeing Flava D perform, which encouraged him to think seriously about playing his own DJ sets.

Among his early musical influences, Virji has cited Flava D, DJ Q, Royal T and Champion. He was especially drawn to the combination of heavy bass and direct 4/4 rhythms that characterizes British bassline.

He played his first sets with his friend and university housemate Yemi. One preferred heavier bass music, while the other leaned toward house, and UK garage became their common ground. Through the genre, Virji began exploring the music of MJ Cole, Todd Edwards, Tuff Jam and other producers in greater depth.

Early tracks and SoundCloud

In the mid-2010s, Virji began actively uploading his own tracks, edits and bootlegs. His early material was focused primarily on 4x4 bassline and club-oriented production.

One of his first notable bootlegs was his version of One Dance, which circulated widely within the British bassline community. Online platforms such as Lengoland played an important role during this period, allowing new tracks to spread quickly among DJs and listeners.

In 2017, Virji released Never Let You Go. Built around vocal material from Tina Moore, the track gained significant popularity on SoundCloud and became one of the releases that established his name within the UK bass scene.

From bassline to UK garage

Sammy Virji’s early work was closely associated with bassline: straight rhythms, aggressive low-frequency synths and sharp drops formed the foundation of many of his tracks.

Over time, his palette became broader. Virji began making greater use of 2-step rhythms, garage swing, vocal fragments, chord progressions and R&B-inspired melodies. The heavy bass remained, but became part of a more flexible garage sound.

This combination of classic UK garage rhythm with the energy of bassline became the foundation of his mature style.

Spice Up My Life

On May 8, 2020, Sammy Virji released his debut full-length album, Spice Up My Life.

The record contains 13 tracks and captures a period in which the producer had already moved beyond predominantly bassline-oriented material. UK garage sits alongside house, vocal tracks and a more melodic approach to arrangement.

The album includes:

  • Spice Up My Life — with Paige Eliza;
  • Basic;
  • Forever — with Tuff Culture;
  • Call His Name;
  • Dance Flaw;
  • Time Travel;
  • The Streets;
  • Elephant;
  • Get Buss — with Dread MC;
  • Curiosity;
  • Somebody Else — with Yemi;
  • Be Careful — with Hans Glader;
  • Until Tomorrow.

Spice Up My Life showed that Virji viewed garage not as a rigidly defined genre, but as a foundation for experimenting with different rhythmic, vocal and bass-driven approaches.

Developing his own sound

By the early 2020s, Sammy Virji had developed a recognizable musical identity. His sound combines UK garage, 2-step, bassline and speed garage with elements of house, R&B, grime and hip-hop.

He does not simply reproduce the aesthetics of 1990s and early-2000s garage. Classic swing and vocal techniques are combined with modern bass design, sharper drops and larger-scale structures designed to work not only in small clubs but also on festival stages.

Melody also remains an important part of Virji’s music. Even his heaviest tracks are often built around a memorable vocal fragment, harmony or distinctive hook.

Shella Verse

One of the notable releases from the next stage of his career was Shella Verse. The track became a regular feature in Virji’s DJ sets and further strengthened his position within the new wave of UK garage.

By this point, he had already spent years working with garage and bassline, so the growing attention around his music was the continuation of a long period of development within the British club scene.

DJ Mag HQ and the international breakthrough

A major turning point came with Sammy Virji’s DJ Mag HQ set, recorded in August 2023.

The performance quickly spread across social media and video platforms. Its high energy, heavy use of Virji’s own material and rapid movement between UK garage and bassline made it one of the most widely discussed performances of his career.

Virji later said that this set significantly changed the scale of his career. By that point, however, he had already been releasing music and performing in British clubs for around eight years.

If U Need It

Following the DJ Mag HQ set, one of Virji’s most popular tracks became If U Need It, released in late 2023.

The track captures his mature formula particularly well: a garage groove, a strong vocal element, dense bass and an arrangement that works equally effectively in clubs and on large festival stages.

Boiler Room

The next major milestone was Sammy Virji’s appearance for Boiler Room. Recorded in Denver, the set was published in November 2024.

The performance blended UK garage and bassline with edits, vocal tracks and contemporary British bass music. By this point, Virji had already developed a significant international following beyond the United Kingdom.

Collaborations

Over the years, Sammy Virji has collaborated with Interplanetary Criminal, Oppidan, salute, Champion, Issey Cross, Skepta, Flowdan, Giggs, MJ Cole, Tuff Jam, Spice, Irah, Unknown T, Chris Lake and other artists.

These collaborations connect him with several generations of British club music at once — from UK garage pioneers to contemporary figures in bass music, grime and British rap.

Cops & Robbers with Skepta

One of his most notable collaborations is Cops & Robbers with British rapper Skepta.

The track brings Virji’s contemporary garage sound together with grime and British rap. In 2025, it entered the UK Top 40 and became one of the most successful releases of his career.

Nostalgia

In April 2025, Sammy Virji released Nostalgia with singer and instrumentalist Issey Cross.

Fans had already heard the track before its official release, as Virji had played it during his 2023 DJ Mag HQ set.

The track is built around characteristic UK garage rhythms, complemented by string arrangements and an expressive vocal melody.

Coachella and international performances

By 2025, Sammy Virji was performing regularly outside the United Kingdom. One of the biggest milestones was his appearances at Coachella.

During the same season, he also appeared on the lineups of Movement Detroit, Outside Lands, Lowlands, All Points East, Pukkelpop and other major festivals.

The expansion of his touring schedule coincided with renewed international interest in UK garage, which once again became a prominent part of club culture across North America, Europe, Australia and Asia.

Same Day Cleaning

On September 19, 2025, Sammy Virji released his second full-length album, Same Day Cleaning.

The album contains 16 tracks and brings together several generations of British club music. Guest performers include Skepta, Giggs, Flowdan, Spice, Irah, Unknown T and Issey Cross, while production collaborations feature MJ Cole, Tuff Jam, salute, Chris Lake, Champion and 33 Below.

Musically, the album combines UK garage, 2-step, grime, bassline and speed garage. Heavy bass is paired with strings, brass, vocal hooks and more sophisticated harmonic work.

Same Day Cleaning simultaneously draws on the history of UK garage and demonstrates the genre’s contemporary evolution. The participation of MJ Cole and Tuff Jam connects the album with garage’s classic era, while collaborations with newer producers and MCs reflect the state of the British club scene in the mid-2020s.

Best Producer — DJ Mag Best of British

In December 2025, Sammy Virji received the Best Producer award at the DJ Mag Best of British Awards.

While accepting the award, he specifically acknowledged the influence of Flava D and Champion — two artists who had played an important role in his musical development from an early stage.

First live show

On March 9, 2026, Virji presented his first full live show at the Sydney Opera House.

Unlike a conventional DJ set, the 80-minute program was structured as a standalone concert performance. The format marked another stage in the project’s development after many years of working primarily as a DJ and electronic music producer.

Sammy Virji’s musical style

UK garage remains the foundation of Sammy Virji’s music, but his work regularly incorporates elements of:

From classic garage, his music inherits swing, vocal fragments and fluid rhythmic movement. Bassline appears through heavy low-frequency production and sharp shifts in energy, while the influence of R&B and soul can be heard in his harmonies and vocal arrangements.

At the same time, Virji’s style remains distinctly contemporary: he uses the language of UK garage as a foundation rather than treating it as an exercise in retro revivalism.

Sammy Virji’s DJ style

Sammy Virji’s sets are built around high energy and free movement between different forms of British bass music.

He combines his own tracks, unreleased dubplates, garage classics, bassline and edits of R&B and rap songs. A familiar vocal or melody often becomes the starting point for an unexpected garage or bassline drop.

This style developed long before his international breakthrough — in smaller British clubs and within the local bass scene.

Sammy Virji and contemporary UK garage

Sammy Virji was working with bassline and garage long before the latest international resurgence of interest in UK garage. His early SoundCloud releases, university performances and years spent playing British clubs shaped his style well before the viral success of his DJ Mag HQ set.

His music brings together several generations of British club culture: classic UK garage, bassline, modern bass production, grime and R&B. At the same time, these older genre elements are adapted to the contemporary festival and streaming environment.

By the mid-2020s, Virji had progressed from a local bassline producer to an international touring artist, with performances at Coachella, full-length albums, collaborations with leading figures from garage and grime, and a dedicated live format.
