Ricky Martin (real name — Enrique Martín Morales; born December 24, 1971, San Juan, Puerto Rico) is a Puerto Rican singer, songwriter and actor, and one of the best-known representatives of Latin pop. He began his international career as a teenager as a member of Menudo, and in the 1990s became a successful solo artist in the Spanish-language market.
Ricky Martin’s worldwide breakthrough is associated with the songs «María», «La Copa de la Vida» and, above all, «Livin' la Vida Loca». His performance of «La Copa de la Vida» at the 1999 Grammy Awards is considered one of the key moments of the so-called Latin pop explosion, a period when Latin music dramatically increased its presence in the American and international pop mainstream.
Among the artist’s other well-known songs are «Vuelve», «Fuego de Noche, Nieve de Día», «Perdido Sin Ti», «She Bangs», «Nobody Wants to Be Lonely» with Christina Aguilera, «Tal Vez», «Tu Recuerdo», «La Mordidita», «Vente Pa' Ca» with Maluma and «Tiburones». Over the course of his career, Ricky Martin has won two Grammy Awards and four Latin Grammy Awards, while his worldwide record sales number in the tens of millions.
Childhood
Enrique Martín Morales was born on December 24, 1971, in San Juan. His parents divorced when he was a child, so the future artist divided his time between both sides of the family.
His interest in performing appeared early. As a child, he appeared in television commercials and attended auditions. Music, dance and working in front of the camera became part of his life long before his solo career began.
Menudo
In 1984, at the age of 12, Ricky Martin became a member of the Puerto Rican teen group Menudo. Before that, he had auditioned several times and was initially rejected, partly because of his short height.
Menudo operated under an unusual system: as members grew older, they were replaced by younger performers. As a result, the group’s lineup was constantly changing.
With the group, Ricky Martin recorded music, appeared on television and in music videos, and toured extensively across Latin America, the United States, Asia and other regions. His years with Menudo became an extremely intensive introduction to the entertainment industry.
Martin spent about five years in the group and left in 1989. By then, he already had considerable experience in live performance, studio recording and television work.
Mexico and acting career
After leaving Menudo, Ricky Martin spent some time in Puerto Rico before moving to Mexico, where he continued his acting career.
He appeared in the musical television series Alcanzar una estrella II and joined Muñecos de Papel, a group created around the project. His television popularity helped him begin an independent music career.
First solo album
In 1991, Ricky Martin released his debut solo album Ricky Martin, recorded in Spanish. The release came out through Sony Discos and was aimed primarily at the Latin American market.
The material belonged largely to the romantic Latin pop style of the early 1990s and still sounded noticeably different from the rhythmic dance-oriented music through which Martin would later become known internationally.
Me Amarás
His second album, Me Amarás, followed in 1993. It featured romantic ballads and pop songs that further established his success across Latin America.

General Hospital

Broadway and Les Misérables
In the mid-1990s, Martin also appeared on Broadway. He played Marius in the musical Les Misérables.

Vuelve
His fourth studio album, Vuelve, was released in 1998. The record firmly established Ricky Martin as one of the leading figures in Latin pop at the end of the decade.

La Copa de la Vida
«La Copa de la Vida», also known in its English-language version as «The Cup of Life», was selected as the official song of the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France.
The track became an international hit and one of the most recognizable sports songs of its era.
The crucial moment came on February 24, 1999, when Ricky Martin performed «La Copa de la Vida» at the 41st Grammy Awards.
The energetic performance with a large ensemble of musicians and dancers ended with a standing ovation and dramatically increased interest in the singer among mainstream American audiences.
Latin pop explosion

She's All I Ever Had and Shake Your Bon-Bon
The album’s success was not limited to «Livin' la Vida Loca».
The ballad «She's All I Ever Had» reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100. Its Spanish-language version was titled «Bella».
The single «Shake Your Bon-Bon» continued the album’s dance-oriented direction.
At the 2000 Grammy Awards, the album Ricky Martin was nominated for Best Pop Vocal Album, while «Livin' la Vida Loca» received nominations including Record of the Year.
Sound Loaded
The next album, Sound Loaded, was released in 2000.
Its lead single was «She Bangs», which continued Martin’s energetic Latin dance-pop direction. The song received a Grammy nomination.
Another important recording was the ballad «Nobody Wants to Be Lonely», reissued as a duet with Christina Aguilera. The collaborative version earned a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals.
Almas del Silencio
After his English-language crossover period, Ricky Martin returned to recording in Spanish.
In 2003, he released Almas del Silencio. Among its best-known songs are «Tal Vez», «Jaleo», «Asignatura Pendiente», «Juramento» and «Y Todo Queda en Nada».
The album returned the singer to romantic Latin pop while retaining rock and flamenco elements in the arrangements.
Life
In 2005, Ricky Martin released the English-language album Life.
On the record, Martin experimented with contemporary R&B and hip-hop. The best-known single was «I Don't Care», featuring Fat Joe and Amerie.
Commercially, Life performed much more modestly than his late-1990s albums, after which the singer again shifted his focus toward Spanish-language material and live projects.
MTV Unplugged
In 2006, Ricky Martin recorded the live project MTV Unplugged.
The acoustic program included reworked versions of well-known songs as well as new material. One of its main singles was «Tu Recuerdo», recorded with La Mari of Chambao and Tommy Torres.
The project won two Latin Grammy Awards, for the album and the video version of the concert.

After several years without a new studio album, Música + Alma + Sexo was released on February 1, 2011.

Return to Broadway: Evita
In 2012, Ricky Martin returned to Broadway in a revival of Evita.

The album won the 2016 Grammy Award for Best Latin Pop Album, becoming Ricky Martin’s second victory at the main Grammy Awards.
Vente Pa' Ca
In 2016, Ricky Martin recorded the single «Vente Pa' Ca» with Colombian singer Maluma.

Las Vegas
In 2017, Ricky Martin launched his own concert residency, All In, at the Park Theater in Las Vegas.

In 2018, Ricky Martin received one of the most notable dramatic roles of his acting career.

In May 2020, Ricky Martin released the EP Pausa.

In the early 2020s, Ricky Martin began developing the concert format Ricky Martin Sinfónico, in which he performs his main catalog with a symphony orchestra.

Fuego de Noche, Nieve de Día with Christian Nodal
In September 2023, Ricky Martin re-recorded one of the best-known ballads from the A Medio Vivir era, «Fuego de Noche, Nieve de Día».
He performed the new version with Mexican singer Christian Nodal. The arrangement retained the dramatic character of the original while adding elements of contemporary Mexican instrumentation.
Palm Royale
In 2024, Martin returned to a major television role in the Apple TV+ series Palm Royale.
He played Robert Diaz, an employee at an exclusive Palm Beach country club. The cast also included Kristen Wiig, Laura Dern, Allison Janney, Carol Burnett, Leslie Bibb and Josh Lucas.
The first season premiered in 2024, while the second began airing in November 2025 and concluded in January 2026.
40 years in music and MTV Latin Icon
In 2025, Ricky Martin marked roughly four decades of professional music activity, counting from his years with Menudo.
On September 7, he received the first-ever Latin Icon Award at the MTV Video Music Awards.
At the ceremony, Martin performed a medley of «Livin' la Vida Loca», «Pégate», «Shake Your Bon-Bon», «Vente Pa' Ca», «María» and «The Cup of Life».
New versions of classic songs
In 2025–2026, the artist continued revisiting his catalog with new arrangements.
In 2025, a new version of «A Medio Vivir» and the official remix «María (KAAZE Remix)» were released.
For the second season of Palm Royale, Martin also recorded «Comin' Home Baby».
Vuelve with Los Ángeles Azules and TINI
On March 26, 2026, Ricky Martin released a new version of «Vuelve» with Mexican group Los Ángeles Azules and Argentine singer TINI.
The original 1998 ballad was reworked in the style of contemporary tropical music and cumbia.
As a result, one of the central songs of Martin’s classic period gained a new life almost three decades after its original release.
Estranho
On June 11, 2026, Ricky Martin released «Estranho», recorded with Brazilian singer Luan Santana.
The song continued the international direction of Martin’s later career and became one of his new Portuguese-language releases.

By this point, he remains one of the most recognizable Puerto Rican performers in the history of international pop music.
Musical style
The foundation of Ricky Martin’s music is Latin pop, although his discography extends far beyond a single genre.
His early solo albums of the early 1990s were primarily romantic pop records. Beginning with A Medio Vivir, Latin rhythms, rock and dance-pop became much more prominent.
Vuelve combined ballads with energetic tropical music, while the 1999 album Ricky Martin added American pop rock and a large-scale crossover sound.
In later years, Martin worked with R&B, electronic music, reggaeton, flamenco and contemporary urban pop. At the same time, his best-known recordings are still built around strong melodic choruses and a pronounced rhythmic foundation.

The foundation has also participated in Puerto Rico recovery programs following Hurricanes Irma and María and continues to develop humanitarian housing initiatives.
Personal life
In 2008, Ricky Martin became a father for the first time. His twin sons Matteo and Valentino were born through surrogacy.
In March 2010, the singer publicly came out as gay, ending years of media speculation surrounding his personal life.
In 2017, Martin married artist Jwan Yosef. The family later welcomed daughter Lucia and son Renn.
In 2023, Ricky Martin and Jwan Yosef announced their divorce. They continued to share parenting responsibilities for their children.
