Max Martin (real name — Karl Martin Sandberg; born February 26, 1971, in Stenhamra, Stockholm County, Sweden) — is a Swedish songwriter, music producer, arranger and musician. He is one of the most commercially successful songwriters in the history of modern pop music.
Since the mid-1990s, Max Martin has contributed to songs by Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears, Robyn, Céline Dion, Bon Jovi, Kelly Clarkson, P!nk, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, The Weeknd, Maroon 5, Justin Timberlake, Adele, Coldplay and many other artists.
Among his best-known works are «...Baby One More Time», «I Want It That Way», «It's My Life», «Since U Been Gone», «I Kissed a Girl», «So What», «Teenage Dream», «Shake It Off», «Blank Space», «Can't Feel My Face», «Can't Stop the Feeling!», «Blinding Lights», «Save Your Tears», «yes, and?», «we can't be friends (wait for your love)», «The Fate of Ophelia» and «Opalite».
By September 2026, Max Martin had written or co-written 30 Billboard Hot 100 number-one songs, trailing only Paul McCartney, who had 32 chart-toppers. As a producer, Martin had contributed to 28 number-one songs and remained the all-time Hot 100 record holder in that category.
Childhood in Stenhamra
Karl Martin Sandberg grew up in Stenhamra on the island of Ekerö, near Stockholm.
One of his earliest strong musical influences was KISS. His older brother introduced him to the American rock band's records, and for a time Sandberg listened to almost nothing else.
At the same time, the future producer received substantial musical training through Sweden's municipal music education system.
He began with the French horn, learned to read music and write scores, and later studied trumpet, drums and keyboards. Max Martin would repeatedly emphasize the importance of accessible public music education to his own career.
He enrolled at the Södra Latin school in Stockholm, where he studied music, but did not complete the program. By then, his desire to play in a band had become stronger than his interest in academic education.
It's Alive and the Name Martin White
As a teenager, Sandberg played in several bands, and in 1985 became the vocalist of the hard rock / glam metal group It's Alive.
On stage, he used the name Martin White.
In 1988, It's Alive took part in the Swedish Rock-SM competition and later performed outside Sweden, including in Germany and Switzerland.
At the time, Sandberg's main goal was a career as a rock vocalist. Producing and writing songs for other artists were not yet seen as separate professions.
The turning point came when the band attracted the attention of Swedish DJ and producer Denniz Pop.
Denniz Pop
Denniz Pop, whose real name was Dag Krister Volle, came to studio production from club DJ culture and by the early 1990s had already become one of the central figures of Sweden's emerging dance scene.
In 1993, his company Cheiron signed It's Alive and released the album Earthquake Visions.
The band did not achieve major international success, but Denniz Pop noticed its singer's talent for melody and arrangement.
Sandberg was given the opportunity to remain at Cheiron and effectively became Denniz Pop's apprentice.
Max Martin later recalled that for his first two years he spent almost all his time in the studio trying to understand what a music producer actually did.
Denniz Pop also gave him a new professional name — Max Martin.
Early Work as Max Martin
One of the earliest appearances of the new name in official credits dates to 1994.
On E-Type's single «This Is the Way», the credit read: «Produced by Denniz Pop and Max Martin».
The working process at Cheiron differed noticeably from the traditional model in which one songwriter brought in a completely finished song.
Several people could work in the same room: one person might create the chorus melody, another the verse, a third the rhythmic foundation or a specific production element. Songwriting became a collaborative process.
Max Martin would later carry this system into his own studios.
Robyn
One of the first artists with whom Martin achieved international success as a pop songwriter was Swedish singer Robyn.
In the 1990s, the Cheiron team worked on her early material. Max Martin contributed to «Do You Know (What It Takes)» and «Show Me Love».
Both songs reached the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States.
The work was also important because it demonstrated that music created in Stockholm could be exported beyond the Scandinavian market.
Backstreet Boys
True international scale arrived through work with Backstreet Boys.
Martin and the Cheiron team were involved from the group's debut era. Early songs included «Quit Playing Games (With My Heart)», which reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100, and «As Long As You Love Me».
Then came «Everybody (Backstreet's Back)».
For the group's 1999 album Millennium, Max Martin and Andreas Carlsson wrote «I Want It That Way».
The song became one of the defining boy-band recordings of its generation and earned its writers a Grammy nomination for Song of the Year.
Martin also contributed to «Larger Than Life», «Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely» and later songs by the group.
Britney Spears and ...Baby One More Time
In the late 1990s, Max Martin wrote the song that firmly established his name in the American music industry.
«...Baby One More Time» was initially offered to other artists, but was ultimately recorded by emerging singer Britney Spears.
The single was released in 1998 and topped the Billboard Hot 100 in January 1999.
It became Max Martin's first US number one as both songwriter and producer.
The song became central to Spears' debut album and one of the most recognizable pop recordings of the late 1990s.
The collaboration continued on her next album. Martin wrote and produced «Oops!... I Did It Again» and also contributed to «Lucky» and «Stronger».
They returned to working together repeatedly in later years. Among the later recordings were «Overprotected», «If U Seek Amy», «3» and other songs.
The Death of Denniz Pop and the Closing of Cheiron
In August 1998, Denniz Pop died of cancer.
For the Cheiron team, this was not only a personal loss. Pop was the person around whom the studio's original working method had formed.
After his death, Max Martin effectively became one of the central figures at Cheiron.
In the late 1990s, the studio continued producing international hits. Alongside Backstreet Boys and Britney Spears, Martin worked with Céline Dion, NSYNC and other artists.
For Céline Dion, he contributed to «That's the Way It Is», while for NSYNC he worked on «It's Gonna Be Me», which topped the Billboard Hot 100 in 2000.
During the same period, Max Martin co-wrote «It's My Life» with Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora for Bon Jovi.
Despite the steady stream of successful projects, the team decided to close Cheiron Studios in 2000.
It was a deliberate conclusion to a particular era rather than a bankruptcy or collapse caused by a lack of work.
Maratone
At the beginning of 2001, Max Martin and Tom Talomaa founded a new company called Maratone.
Among the new studio's first projects were songs for Britney Spears' third album, Britney.
However, the early 2000s proved more difficult for Martin than the previous years.
The Cheiron sound that had defined the late 1990s began to age quickly. The pop market was changing: hip-hop, R&B, guitar pop and harder rock music were becoming more prominent.
Martin later admitted that for a time he kept working within the familiar model even as listeners were already moving on.
Instead of trying to reproduce the teen-pop formula indefinitely, he began studying new records and changing his production approach.
Since U Been Gone and a New Sound
One of the main results of this reinvention was his work with Kelly Clarkson.
In 2004, Max Martin and Dr. Luke wrote «Since U Been Gone».
Instead of the synthesizers associated with late-1990s Cheiron, the song used heavy guitars, powerful drums and a pop melody placed inside an almost alternative-rock arrangement.
Martin and Dr. Luke also worked on «Behind These Hazel Eyes».
Clarkson's success showed that Max Martin could change his own production language without losing his defining strength — melody.
P!nk
In the second half of the 2000s, one of Martin's regular collaborators became P!nk.
He contributed to «Who Knew» and «U + Ur Hand», and later to «So What», «Please Don't Leave Me» and «Raise Your Glass».
«So What» topped the Billboard Hot 100 in 2008.
His work with P!nk clearly demonstrated how far Martin had moved beyond Cheiron's exclusively teen-pop reputation. The songs retained an almost mathematically precise chorus structure, but sounded like pop-rock tailored to a specific artist.
Katy Perry
His collaboration with Katy Perry became even more significant.
Max Martin contributed to «I Kissed a Girl» and «Hot n Cold» for the album One of the Boys.
On the following album, Teenage Dream, his role became even greater.
Martin was among the writers and producers of «California Gurls», «Teenage Dream», «E.T.» and «Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)».
All four songs topped the Billboard Hot 100. The album itself matched the record set by Michael Jackson's Bad, producing five number-one singles from a single album.
Martin later worked with Perry again on «Part of Me», «Wide Awake», «Roar» and «Dark Horse».
Shellback
A major influence on the next stage of Max Martin's work came from Swedish musician Shellback — Karl Johan Schuster.
Shellback came from a metal background and initially had little interest in commercial pop music.
Martin saw potential in him and invited him to work at Maratone in the mid-2000s. Gradually, the relationship developed from mentorship into a long-term songwriting partnership.
Their first major collaborations date to the late 2000s, including material for P!nk and Britney Spears.
Shellback brought more aggressive rhythms, live guitars and contemporary programming, while Martin remained especially focused on vocal melody and song structure.
The partnership would go on to become one of the most successful production teams of the 2010s.
Maroon 5 and Other Early-2010s Projects
By the early 2010s, Max Martin was working simultaneously across several areas of mainstream pop.
For Maroon 5, he contributed to «Moves Like Jagger» and «One More Night». The latter spent nine weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100.
He worked with Usher on «DJ Got Us Fallin' in Love» and «Scream», with Avril Lavigne on «What the Hell» and «Wish You Were Here», and also with Christina Aguilera, Jessie J and other artists.
At the same time, Martin increasingly stopped working as a solo producer. Shellback, Savan Kotecha, ILYA, Oscar Holter and other writers became regular contributors to his recordings.
Taylor Swift: Red
Max Martin first collaborated with Taylor Swift during work on the album Red.
Before that, Swift had primarily been a country-pop songwriter and was gradually expanding the electronic side of her recordings.
Together with Martin and Shellback, she wrote «We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together», «I Knew You Were Trouble» and «22».
«We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together» became Swift's first single to top the Billboard Hot 100.
These songs did not turn all of Red into a pop album, but they pointed toward the direction she would fully develop on her next record.
1989
In 2014, Taylor Swift released 1989, her first album officially positioned as a full-scale pop record.
Max Martin served as one of the project's key producers and also handled vocal production.
Together with Swift and Shellback, he wrote «Shake It Off», «Blank Space», «Style», «Bad Blood» and «Wildest Dreams».
«Shake It Off», «Blank Space» and the Kendrick Lamar version of «Bad Blood» all topped the Billboard Hot 100.
«Blank Space» is a particularly clear example of Martin's approach to pop arrangement: there are relatively few instruments, but the voice is constantly supported by short sonic accents, while the melody shifts in almost every section.
At the 2016 Grammy Awards, «Blank Space» was nominated for Song of the Year and Record of the Year.
Grammy Producer of the Year
At the 57th Grammy Awards in 2015, Max Martin received the award for Producer of the Year, Non-Classical.
It was an important professional recognition for someone who had already spent around twenty years creating international hits while rarely appearing in public.
Martin has always given far fewer interviews than the artists he works with and has almost never attempted to build a celebrity career of his own.
The Weeknd and Can't Feel My Face
Another new collaborator was The Weeknd.
In 2015, Max Martin contributed to «Can't Feel My Face».
For Abel Tesfaye, it was one of the recordings that moved him from alternative R&B into global pop mainstream while preserving his distinctive high vocal register and the darker side of his music.
«Can't Feel My Face» topped the Billboard Hot 100.
The collaboration would later prove far more extensive than it initially appeared.
Ariana Grande
Max Martin began working with Ariana Grande during the era of her album My Everything.
He contributed to «Problem», «Break Free», «Love Me Harder» and other songs.
On Dangerous Woman, this was followed by «Dangerous Woman», «Into You», «Side to Side» and other recordings.
Martin later worked on «No Tears Left to Cry», «God Is a Woman» and material from subsequent albums.
This work is particularly closely connected with another Swedish producer — ILYA, one of the writers who emerged from Max Martin's professional circle.
Can't Stop the Feeling!
In 2016, Max Martin, Shellback and Justin Timberlake wrote «Can't Stop the Feeling!» for the animated film Trolls.
The single debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100.
At the 2017 Grammy Awards, Martin, Shellback and Timberlake won Best Song Written for Visual Media.
Polar Music Prize
In 2016, Max Martin received one of Sweden's most prestigious music honors — the Polar Music Prize.
The jury specifically highlighted his ability to create melodies that remain recognizable regardless of time, country or performer.
At the ceremony, Max Martin joked self-deprecatingly that he had successfully «hidden between two speakers in a basement» for more than twenty years before the prize brought him onto the stage.
In his speech, he also cited ABBA, KISS, Prince and Swedish songwriter Lasse Holm among his own inspirations.
Songwriters Hall of Fame
In June 2017, Max Martin was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
At the ceremony, Jon Bon Jovi performed an acoustic version of «It's My Life» and then introduced Martin as one of the song's writers.
By then, the Swedish producer's catalog already spanned several generations of pop artists — from Backstreet Boys and Britney Spears to Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande and The Weeknd.
Reputation
His collaboration with Taylor Swift continued on Reputation in 2017.
Max Martin and Shellback contributed to «...Ready for It?», «End Game», «I Did Something Bad», «Don't Blame Me», «Delicate» and other tracks.
Musically, this material was significantly heavier than 1989, with trap-oriented drums, distorted bass and denser electronic production.
After Reputation, Martin stopped contributing to Swift's new studio albums for several years, although songs from their earlier work remained an important part of her live catalog.
Blinding Lights
At the end of 2019, The Weeknd released «Blinding Lights».
The song was written by Abel Tesfaye, Max Martin, Oscar Holter, Belly and DaHeala. Martin, Holter and The Weeknd also served as producers.
The arrangement was built around a fast drum-machine rhythm, a synthesizer bass line and a bright lead synth referencing 1980s synth-pop.
«Blinding Lights» spent four weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, but its main achievement came from its overall longevity on the chart.
Billboard later ranked it number one on its all-time list of the most successful Hot 100 songs.
For Max Martin, it was a rare case of a new song becoming one of the biggest chart records of his career more than twenty years after «...Baby One More Time».
Save Your Tears
On the same The Weeknd album, After Hours, Max Martin and Oscar Holter worked on «Save Your Tears».
In 2021, the remix featuring Ariana Grande reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100.
The project therefore brought together several of Martin's regular creative partners at once: The Weeknd, Ariana Grande and the Swedish production network around MXM/Wolf Cousins.
Coldplay and My Universe
In the early 2020s, Max Martin began working closely with Coldplay.
He became one of the main producers of the album Music of the Spheres.
The project's biggest single was «My Universe», recorded with South Korean group BTS.
In October 2021, it debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, adding another chart-topper to Martin's songwriting and production catalog.
MXM and the Swedish Songwriting School
After Cheiron and Maratone, Max Martin's professional system gradually developed into a network of writers and producers associated with MXM Music.
Mentorship is important to Martin, reflecting the kind of support he himself received from Denniz Pop.
At different times, his circle has included Rami Yacoub, Shellback, Savan Kotecha, Johan Carlsson, Peter Svensson, ILYA, Oscar Holter, Ali Payami, Mattman & Robin, The Struts, OzGo and other writers.
In 2013, the collective Wolf Cousins formed around Shellback and a group of younger Swedish producers.
It is not a group with a fixed lineup in the traditional sense, but a network of writers who can come together in different combinations for a particular artist.
This working method directly inherits Cheiron's philosophy: the best result matters more than who had the original idea.
& Juliet
Max Martin's catalog also took on a separate life in theater.
In 2019, the musical & Juliet opened in London's West End.
Playwright David West Read created an alternative continuation of Shakespeare's story in which Juliet does not die after Romeo but begins a new life.
The plot is built around songs from Max Martin's catalog, including «...Baby One More Time», «Everybody», «I Want It That Way», «Since U Been Gone», «Roar», «Stronger» and «Can't Stop the Feeling!».
On November 17, 2022, the production officially opened on Broadway at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre.
& Juliet received nine Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical.
By 2026, the production had developed into an international theatrical franchise. The Broadway version continued its run and was scheduled to close on January 3, 2027.
Ariana Grande — Eternal Sunshine
In 2024, Max Martin played a central role in creating Ariana Grande's album Eternal Sunshine.
Together with Grande, ILYA and other writers, he contributed to most of the album's tracks.
The first single, «yes, and?», debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100.
For Ariana, it was her eighth US number one, while for Max Martin the song had historic significance.
It became his 24th number-one hit as a producer, allowing Martin to surpass George Martin and set a new all-time Billboard Hot 100 record.
The next single, «we can't be friends (wait for your love)», also topped the US chart.
The Weeknd — Hurry Up Tomorrow
His collaboration with The Weeknd continued into the mid-2020s.
Max Martin contributed to «Dancing in the Flames» and later to several tracks from the Hurry Up Tomorrow project.
In the album's official credits, he is listed among the writers and producers of «Society», «Open Hearts», «Give Me Mercy» and «Runaway».
On many of these recordings, he again worked with Oscar Holter, ILYA and Abel Tesfaye himself.
Ten years after «Can't Feel My Face», the Martin-The Weeknd collaboration had therefore remained a sustained working relationship rather than a series of isolated hits.
Return to Taylor Swift
In 2025, one of the most notable reunions of Max Martin's career took place.
After several Taylor Swift albums recorded without him, she reunited with Martin and Shellback for The Life of a Showgirl.
The album was created primarily in Sweden during the European leg of The Eras Tour.
All twelve tracks were produced by Taylor Swift, Max Martin and Shellback. Martin also played keyboards throughout the album and, on many tracks, piano while contributing to programming.
The songs include «The Fate of Ophelia», «Elizabeth Taylor», «Opalite», «Father Figure», «Eldest Daughter», «Ruin the Friendship», «Actually Romantic», «Wi$h Li$t» and the title track featuring Sabrina Carpenter.
The Fate of Ophelia and a New Record
The first single, «The Fate of Ophelia», was released alongside the album in autumn 2025 and debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100.
It became Max Martin's 28th US number one as a songwriter and 26th as a producer.
By then, Martin already held the Hot 100 production record comfortably and ranked second among songwriters behind Paul McCartney.
Opalite and a 29th Number One
In February 2026, «Opalite» became the second US chart-topper from The Life of a Showgirl.
Taylor Swift wrote and produced the song with Max Martin and Shellback.
On February 28, 2026, it reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100.
For Max Martin, it became his 29th number one as a songwriter and 27th as a producer.
Only Paul McCartney, with 32 number-one songs, remained ahead of him among songwriters. Among producers, Martin was already the all-time Hot 100 record holder.
Ariana Grande — hate that i made you love me
On May 29, 2026, Ariana Grande released the single «hate that i made you love me», written and produced with Max Martin and ILYA.
The song debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100. For Max Martin, it became his 30th US number one as a songwriter and a record-extending 28th as a producer.
Martin therefore moved closer to Paul McCartney's songwriting record of 32 number-one songs while extending his own all-time production record on the Hot 100.
How Max Martin Writes Songs
The phrase «melodic math» is often used when discussing Max Martin's method.
It is not an official formula by which Martin mechanically calculates a hit. Rather, the phrase describes his attention to the internal logic of melody.
For him, every new section of a song should give the listener new information.
If the verse melody is complex, the lyrics or arrangement may be simpler. If the chorus contains long notes, space is cleared around them. Repetition is used often enough for a phrase to become memorable, but not so much that the song stops developing.
The sound of the words themselves is also important.
In international pop music, phonetics can sometimes matter to Martin almost as much as literal meaning. Vowels need to sit comfortably on high notes, consonants should support the rhythm, and the main phrase of the chorus must be easy to pronounce.
This approach is especially clear in «...Baby One More Time», «I Want It That Way», «Teenage Dream», «Blank Space» and «Blinding Lights»: completely different artists and eras, yet in every case the melody remains clear even without the arrangement.
Production Approach
Max Martin does not adhere to a single genre-specific sound of his own.
Cheiron in the 1990s is associated with teen pop and eurodance; his mid-2000s work with pop-rock; Katy Perry with electro-pop; Taylor Swift with synth-pop and contemporary pop production; The Weeknd with R&B and synthwave; Coldplay with arena pop.
For that reason, looking for one «Max Martin sound» only in his choice of synthesizers or drums is not entirely accurate.
Far more consistent is his approach to structure:
- a strong central melody;
- a quickly recognizable hook;
- contrast between sections;
- precise phrase length;
- minimal elements that interfere with the vocal;
- gradual introduction of new details;
- a chorus that already feels natural after the first listen.
Martin is also known for his attention to vocal production. He may work not only on the melody itself, but also on where a singer breathes, which consonant is emphasized, where an additional double is recorded and how several vocal tracks combine into a single phrase.
Teamwork
Another characteristic of Max Martin is the absence of a romantic belief that a great song must necessarily be written by one person.
The Cheiron model was built around collaboration, and Martin has retained that approach throughout his career.
Shellback may suggest a groove or guitar part, ILYA a production element, Savan Kotecha a lyrical idea, Oscar Holter a synthesizer structure, and the artist an initial melody or storyline.
Within this system, Martin often serves as the person who sees the song as a whole and understands which element needs to be removed or added.
As a result, his influence on modern pop music is connected not only with his own songs, but also with several generations of writers who passed through Cheiron, Maratone, MXM and Wolf Cousins.

Personal Life
Max Martin is known for being highly private and rarely discusses his family in interviews.
His wife's name is Jenny. The couple have a daughter named Doris.
At the Polar Music Prize ceremony in 2016, Martin publicly thanked his wife and daughter, describing their support as one of the most important parts of his life.
Despite being one of the most successful songwriters in modern music, he still appears far more often in studio credits than in television interviews or on social media.
Creative Journey
Max Martin did not begin as someone who dreamed of writing songs for pop stars. In the mid-1980s, he wanted to be the vocalist of a hard rock band, and he only entered the Cheiron studio environment after Denniz Pop became interested in It's Alive.
Cheiron gave him the working model he has now used for more than thirty years: a song is built not around the producer's name, but around the melody and the specific artist. After the studio closed, Martin managed to abandon his own highly successful 1990s sound and adapt first to 2000s pop-rock, then to electropop and EDM, and later to synthwave, contemporary R&B and new forms of mainstream pop.
For that reason, his catalog is difficult to tie to a single era. «...Baby One More Time» belongs to the late 1990s, «Since U Been Gone» to the mid-2000s, «Teenage Dream» to the early 2010s, «Blank Space» to the middle of that decade, «Blinding Lights» to the turn of the 2020s, while «The Fate of Ophelia» and «Opalite» already belong to the middle of the decade.
As of September 2026, Max Martin remains an active songwriter and producer rather than a historical figure from a previous pop era. Ariana Grande's «hate that i made you love me» gave him his 30th songwriting number one and record-extending 28th production number one on the Billboard Hot 100 — more than twenty-seven years after «...Baby One More Time» first took him to the top of the US chart.
