Mama Aoki is the stage name of Chizuru Kobayashi, the mother of American DJ and producer Steve Aoki. She appeared in music catalogues as a featured performer on Steve Aoki & Vini Vici — Moshi Moshi, released in 2018 on Dim Mak Records. Her voice, delivering short Japanese phrases, became one of the track’s central elements.
Mama Aoki should not be considered a conventional solo music project with an extensive discography or long-running performing career. Her involvement in electronic music is primarily connected with a single recording, but Moshi Moshi received a full international release, appeared on Steve Aoki’s 5OKI EP and gave Chizuru her own artist profile on major streaming services. Apple Music, Spotify, Deezer and Beatport all list Mama Aoki among the official contributors to the track.
Chizuru Kobayashi and the Aoki family
Mama Aoki’s real name is Chizuru Kobayashi. She is originally from Japan and was the first wife of Japanese-American entrepreneur Hiroaki “Rocky” Aoki, founder of the Benihana restaurant chain. Their son Steve Aoki later became one of the best-known American electronic music producers, the founder of Dim Mak Records and an internationally successful festival DJ. Billboard has also identified Kobayashi as Steve Aoki’s mother and Rocky Aoki’s first wife.
Chizuru and Rocky Aoki had three children — Kana Grace, Kevin and Steve. After their parents divorced, Steve was raised primarily by his mother and later repeatedly emphasised the importance of family and his Japanese heritage in his life.
Chizuru herself did not pursue a public career in show business for most of her life. Mama Aoki’s appearance on her son’s official release therefore became an unusual family episode that also turned into a genuine entry in electronic music discography.
Why Mama Aoki appeared
The stage name Mama Aoki literally reflects her family role — “Aoki’s mother.” It was not created as a conventional artistic alias for a separate music career.
In 2018, Steve Aoki was working on a series of electronic collaborations titled 5OKI. The concept revolved around joint tracks with prominent representatives of the EDM scene. The series included collaborations with Quintino, LOOPERS, Laidback Luke, Hardwell and Israeli psytrance duo Vini Vici. The final track in the series was Moshi Moshi.
For the vocal part, Steve invited his own mother, who received the official credit Mama Aoki.
Moshi Moshi with Steve Aoki and Vini Vici
Moshi Moshi was released on April 20, 2018 via Dim Mak Records as a collaborative single by Steve Aoki and Vini Vici, featuring Mama Aoki. One week later, the track appeared on the 5OKI EP.
The title comes from the Japanese expression もしもし — moshi moshi, traditionally used when answering a telephone call. Mama Aoki’s voice does not function as a conventional pop vocal with verses and choruses. Instead, short Japanese phrases are used as rhythmic and character-defining elements within the electronic arrangement.
Electronic Arts, while presenting the track as part of its collaboration with the game Need for Speed No Limits, specifically highlighted that the “Moshi Moshi” vocal belonged to Steve Aoki’s mother.
Steve Aoki and Vini Vici
The musical foundation of Moshi Moshi was created by Steve Aoki and the Israeli duo Vini Vici, consisting of Aviram Saharai and Matan Kadosh.
For Aoki, the collaboration formed part of his return to more direct festival EDM through the 5OKI project, while Vini Vici brought elements characteristic of contemporary psytrance.
As a result, the track operates at a considerably higher energy level than much of Steve Aoki’s traditional electro-house material: a fast tempo, hard rhythmic foundation, acid-style synthesizer line and the continuous bass pulse associated with psytrance are combined with Mama Aoki’s short Japanese vocal phrases. EA described the recording as a combination of an acid drop and an EDM drop within a psytrance tempo.
303 and the acid sound
One of the most distinctive musical features of Moshi Moshi is a line inspired by the famous Roland TB-303 synthesizer. Similar resonant, “acidic” timbres historically shaped the language of acid house and later became part of numerous styles of electronic dance music.
Dim Mak’s official description also highlighted the classic 303 acid line as one of the track’s central elements.
Combined with the high tempo and psytrance bass, this sound makes Moshi Moshi considerably harder than much of Steve Aoki’s pop-oriented material from that period.
The role of Mama Aoki’s voice
Chizuru Kobayashi’s vocal contribution is important not because of technical complexity, but because of its character.
She does not perform as a traditional singer. Her voice is used almost like a sample or an additional electronic instrument: short phrases appear between instrumental sections and help establish the track’s Japanese identity.
For this reason, the credit feat. Mama Aoki is not simply a family joke in the title. She genuinely recorded vocal material and is officially listed as a featured artist on streaming services and specialist music platforms.
The Japanese theme in Steve Aoki’s music
His mother’s participation fits into Steve Aoki’s broader connection with his family’s Japanese heritage. Although Aoki himself was born in the United States and developed within the American punk, indie and electronic scenes, Japanese culture regularly appears in the visual aesthetics and concepts of some of his projects.
In Moshi Moshi, that connection became particularly direct: instead of using a stylised Japanese image, Steve incorporated the actual voice of his own mother.
The recording can therefore be viewed not only as a festival collaboration with Vini Vici, but also as a small family document within Aoki’s enormous catalogue.
5OKI
Moshi Moshi became the fifth and final part of the 5OKI project. The EP was released on April 27, 2018 and consisted of five collaborations:

- It’s Time — Steve Aoki and Laidback Luke featuring Bruce Buffer;
- Pika Pika — Steve Aoki and LOOPERS;
- Moshi Moshi — Steve Aoki and Vini Vici featuring Mama Aoki.
As a result, Chizuru appeared on the same release alongside several major figures from the global EDM scene.
Music video and Need for Speed No Limits
An official Dim Mak music video was produced for Moshi Moshi in connection with the mobile racing game Need for Speed No Limits.
Steve Aoki took part in a special integration with the game, while the track itself was used as part of the project. Electronic Arts simultaneously promoted the track and highlighted Mama Aoki’s participation in the vocal recording.
This meant that Chizuru’s voice appeared not only on music streaming services, but also within an international video game franchise.
The genre of Moshi Moshi
Its genre classification varies depending on the version and the specific music store. Beatport classified the extended mix within festival-oriented electronic music and listed its tempo at 138 BPM; elsewhere in Beatport’s catalogue, the recording has also been presented as psytrance.
Musically, Moshi Moshi is most accurately described as a combination of psytrance, festival EDM, electro house and acid-influenced electronic music.
Mama Aoki’s contribution is not related to production: the electronic arrangement was created by Steve Aoki and Vini Vici, while her role was that of a featured voice.
Does Mama Aoki have other songs?
In publicly available official music catalogues, Mama Aoki’s independent discography is effectively limited to Moshi Moshi and different releases of the same composition.
Apple Music lists the original single, the version included on 5OKI and the track’s appearance in a Steve Aoki DJ mix. Deezer likewise connects her artist profile primarily with 5OKI and Moshi Moshi.
It would therefore be incorrect to attribute albums, solo singles or distinct musical eras to her. Mama Aoki is an example of a featured contributor who received an independent artist profile on streaming platforms because of an official recording credit.
Not a professional singer, but a featured artist
This distinction is particularly important in the context of a music encyclopedia.
Mama Aoki should not be described as a Japanese EDM singer or electronic music producer. There is no basis for attributing an independent career in those fields to her.
A more accurate description is “featured vocalist” or “participant on the recording Moshi Moshi”. Her presence in Apple Music, Spotify, Beatport and Discogs databases is connected with a professionally released recording, but does not indicate the existence of a separate long-term musical project.
Connection with Aoki family culture
Mama Aoki has occasionally appeared alongside her son outside the context of the recording itself. The image of his mother has become part of the family story that Steve Aoki has never completely separated from his public career.
For example, when developing his Pizzaoki pizza delivery venture, the company used Chizuru Kobayashi’s family sauce recipe. American restaurant media explicitly referred to it as “Mama Aoki’s sauce.”
This also helps explain the choice of stage name: Mama Aoki is not an attempt to create a separate fictional stage persona, but a public extension of Chizuru’s real family role.

Mama Aoki’s place in electronic music
Mama Aoki’s historical significance should not be exaggerated: she did not shape a separate musical genre and did not build a career as a professional electronic artist.
Nevertheless, Moshi Moshi represents an unusual episode in the history of modern EDM culture. One of the biggest American DJs joined forces with a leading Israeli psytrance project, but instead of using a professional guest singer, he incorporated the voice of his own Japanese mother.
That decision gave the track its individuality. Mama Aoki’s short vocal phrases became as natural a part of the festival production as its acid synthesizer line or Vini Vici’s fast bass pulse.
As a result, Chizuru Kobayashi gained her own place in the official discography of electronic music — limited in size, but entirely real. Mama Aoki remains above all a unique family contributor within Steve Aoki’s catalogue, while Moshi Moshi remains the only work consistently associated with her artist name.
