Kanye West (full birth name — Kanye Omari West; born June 8, 1977, Atlanta, Georgia, USA; officially known as Ye since 2021) is an American rapper, music producer, songwriter and designer, and one of the most influential figures in 21st-century hip-hop. He began his career as a producer for other artists, and after the release of The College Dropout became a solo performer who repeatedly reinvented both his own sound and the direction of mainstream rap.
At different stages of his career, West has combined hip-hop with soul, gospel, electronic music, rock, house and industrial electronics. Among his best-known recordings are Through the Wire, Jesus Walks, Gold Digger, Stronger, Good Life, Heartless, Power, Runaway, All of the Lights, Black Skinhead, Bound 2, Ultralight Beam, Father Stretch My Hands Pt. 1, Ghost Town, Follow God, Hurricane, Praise God and Carnival.
Kanye West has won 24 Grammy Awards and remains one of the most awarded rap artists in the history of the ceremony.
Childhood in Chicago and first musical experiences
Kanye West was born in Atlanta, but after his parents divorced he moved with his mother to Chicago. His mother, Donda West, taught English and later chaired the department at Chicago State University. His relationship with her became one of the recurring personal themes in his work — from the song Hey Mama to the albums Donda and Donda 2.
As a child, Kanye spent some time living with his mother in China, and after returning to the United States became increasingly involved in art and music. One of his most important early mentors was Chicago producer No I.D..
West attended several educational institutions, including Chicago State University, but left college to pursue a music career. This decision later became the conceptual basis of his debut album The College Dropout.
Production breakthrough and The Blueprint
Before establishing his own rap career, Kanye first became known primarily as a producer. In the late 1990s, he worked with Chicago artists and was a member of the group Go-Getters before beginning to receive production work from artists signed to major labels.
His work on Jay-Z — The Blueprint in 2001 became especially important. West contributed to Izzo (H.O.V.A.), Heart of the City (Ain't No Love) and Never Change.
It was during this period that his early production style became widely recognised: fragments of old soul recordings, sped-up vocals, altered sample pitch and dense drums. Similar techniques had existed before, but West helped turn them into one of the central aesthetics of commercial hip-hop in the early 2000s.
He also produced music for Alicia Keys, Ludacris, Talib Kweli, Scarface, Janet Jackson and other performers. At the same time, he wanted to be recognised not only as a producer but also as a rapper.
Through the Wire
In October 2002, West was involved in a serious car accident in Los Angeles and suffered a fractured jaw.
While recovering, he recorded Through the Wire, rapping with his jaw wired shut. The song was built around a sped-up sample of Through the Fire by Chaka Khan.
The track established many of the qualities that would define early Kanye: soul sampling, autobiographical writing, humour and a determination to write about his own life rather than imitate the common themes of commercial rap.
The College Dropout
His debut album The College Dropout was released on February 10, 2004. In its songs, West addressed education, religion, work, consumerism, family relationships, social contradictions and his own insecurities.
The album includes We Don't Care, All Falls Down, Spaceship, Jesus Walks, Never Let Me Down, The New Workout Plan, Slow Jamz and Through the Wire.
Jesus Walks became one of the album's central recordings. West brought an explicitly Christian theme into a major rap single, combining it with a heavy beat and choral parts.
The College Dropout won the Grammy Award for Best Rap Album, Jesus Walks won Best Rap Song, and West's production work on Alicia Keys' You Don't Know My Name earned him another award.
Late Registration
The second album, Late Registration, was released in 2005. Composer and producer Jon Brion became an important contributor to its sound, expanding West's familiar soul samples with a larger instrumental palette including strings, brass and piano.
The album includes Heard 'Em Say, Touch the Sky, Gold Digger, Drive Slow, Roses, Diamonds from Sierra Leone, Hey Mama and Gone.
Gold Digger featuring Jamie Foxx became one of Kanye's biggest hits and topped the Billboard Hot 100. Late Registration itself became West's first album to reach number one on the Billboard 200.
Hey Mama, dedicated to Donda West, occupies a particularly important place in his catalogue. After his mother's death in 2007, the song acquired an even deeper personal significance.
Graduation
The third album, Graduation, arrived in 2007. Here, West moved noticeably away from the dense soul-based sound of his previous records toward synthesizers, electronic pop and larger-scale compositions designed for major concert venues.
The album includes Good Morning, Champion, Stronger, I Wonder, Good Life, Can't Tell Me Nothing, Flashing Lights and Homecoming.
Stronger, built around material from Daft Punk's Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger, became one of the clearest examples of American hip-hop moving closer to European electronic music during the second half of the 2000s and gave West another Billboard Hot 100 number one.
808s & Heartbreak
Following the death of his mother and the end of a long-term relationship, Kanye completely changed direction. The 2008 album 808s & Heartbreak largely abandoned conventional rap in favour of singing, Auto-Tune, the Roland TR-808 drum machine and cold synthesizers.
Its key tracks include Say You Will, Welcome to Heartbreak, Heartless, Love Lockdown, Paranoid, Street Lights and Coldest Winter.
Auto-Tune was used here not simply as vocal processing, but as an artistic effect that emphasised emotional distance and loneliness.
Over time, 808s & Heartbreak became one of West's most influential works. Its combination of rap, melodic vocals, emotional openness and minimalist electronics had a significant impact on the next generation of hip-hop and alternative R&B.
My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
After the minimalism of 808s & Heartbreak, West chose the opposite approach. My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, released in 2010, became an extremely dense production in which hip-hop was combined with soul, rock, electronic music and orchestral arrangements.
The album includes Dark Fantasy, Gorgeous, Power, All of the Lights, Monster, So Appalled, Devil in a New Dress, Runaway, Hell of a Life and Lost in the World.
The nearly nine-minute Runaway featuring Pusha T became one of West's best-known works. Beginning with a single piano note, the track gradually expands before ending with an extended section of heavily processed vocals.
The album also established a method that became increasingly characteristic of Kanye's later career: rather than creating a record alone, he increasingly acted as the director of a large creative team, bringing together ideas from numerous producers, musicians and songwriters.
Watch the Throne
In 2011, Kanye West and Jay-Z released the collaborative album Watch the Throne. Their professional relationship dated back to the period of The Blueprint, but this time they appeared as equal performers.
The album includes No Church in the Wild, Lift Off, Otis, Gotta Have It, New Day, Who Gon Stop Me and N****s in Paris.
N****s in Paris won Grammy Awards for Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song, while No Church in the Wild won Best Rap/Sung Collaboration.
GOOD Music
At the same time, West continued developing his label and creative collective GOOD Music. Over the years, artists associated with it included Common, John Legend, Kid Cudi, Pusha T, Big Sean and Teyana Taylor.
In 2012, the collective album Cruel Summer was released, featuring tracks such as Mercy, Clique and New God Flow. This period showed West not only as a solo artist but also as a producer capable of building an entire musical environment around himself.
Yeezus
In 2013, West released Yeezus — one of the most radical albums of his career. Its sound combines hip-hop with industrial electronics, acid house, techno, electro and noise textures.
The album includes On Sight, Black Skinhead, I Am a God, New Slaves, Hold My Liquor, Blood on the Leaves, Guilt Trip, Send It Up and Bound 2.
Daft Punk, Mike Dean, Hudson Mohawke, Arca and other musicians contributed to the record. During the final stage, West brought in Rick Rubin, with whom he significantly reduced and simplified the material.
After the maximalist density of My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, the new album was built almost on the opposite principle: minimal detail, sharp rhythms, distorted sound and deliberately abrasive electronic textures.
The Life of Pablo
The Life of Pablo was released in 2016. The album combines gospel, soul samples, trap, traditional rap and experimental electronics.
It includes Ultralight Beam, Father Stretch My Hands Pt. 1, Famous, Feedback, Waves, FML, Real Friends, Wolves, No More Parties in LA and Saint Pablo.
The record became one of the first major digital albums to be noticeably altered after its initial release: West continued updating mixes, parts and individual song versions.
Ultralight Beam became especially important for his later career: the combination of rap, choir and gospel anticipated Sunday Service and the religious period at the end of the decade.
Wyoming Sessions, ye and Kids See Ghosts
In 2018, West organised a series of studio sessions in Wyoming. Over a short period, they produced Pusha T's Daytona, West's own album ye, the collaborative Kid Cudi project Kids See Ghosts, Nas' Nasir and Teyana Taylor's K.T.S.E..
ye consists of only seven tracks: I Thought About Killing You, Yikes, All Mine, Wouldn't Leave, No Mistakes, Ghost Town and Violent Crimes.
One week later, Kids See Ghosts was released, also consisting of seven tracks. The album combined psychedelic hip-hop, rock, soul sampling and Kid Cudi's melodic style. Among its best-known tracks are 4th Dimension, Reborn and Cudi Montage.
Sunday Service and Jesus Is King
In 2019, West began staging Sunday Service performances featuring a large choir, gospel arrangements and reworked versions of his own songs.
In October, he released Jesus Is King. Religious themes became central, while Kanye's familiar mixture of rap and electronic music was expanded with extensive choir and gospel elements.
The album includes Every Hour, Selah, Follow God, Closed on Sunday, On God, Everything We Need, Water, God Is, Hands On and Use This Gospel.
Jesus Is King topped the Billboard 200 and won the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Christian Music Album.
Donda
West's tenth solo album was named after his mother — Donda. Its 2021 release was preceded by a series of large public listening events in Atlanta and Chicago, during which the material continued to evolve.
Donda was released on August 29, 2021. Its key tracks include Jail, Off the Grid, Hurricane, Praise God, Believe What I Say, 24, Moon, Heaven and Hell, Jesus Lord, Come to Life and No Child Left Behind.
The recording featured Jay-Z, The Weeknd, Lil Baby, Playboi Carti, Travis Scott, Kid Cudi, Fivio Foreign and other artists.
The album topped the Billboard 200. Jail later won the Grammy Award for Best Rap Song, while Hurricane won Best Melodic Rap Performance.
Name change to Ye and Donda 2
In October 2021, a court officially approved Kanye Omari West's request to change his legal name to Ye. However, the name Kanye West continues to be widely used in music catalogues and the media.
Donda 2 was first presented in February 2022 and was initially distributed through the Stem Player device.
Because of its unusual release format, the project occupied a unique place in his discography for several years. On April 29, 2025, a revised edition of Donda 2 appeared on conventional digital platforms as a standalone album.
Yeezy and the split with Adidas
Alongside music, Kanye built a major business around the Yeezy brand. His partnership with Adidas became especially significant, turning Yeezy into one of the best-known footwear lines created in collaboration with a music artist.
In October 2022, Adidas ended its partnership with Ye following a series of antisemitic public statements, stopped production of Yeezy products and suspended payments to his companies.
This became one of the most serious professional consequences of Ye's public behaviour and radically changed the commercial structure surrounding his name.
Vultures 1 and Vultures 2
The next major musical phase in Ye's career was connected with Ty Dolla $ign. Their collaborative project was named ¥$.
Vultures 1 was released on February 10, 2024. The album includes Stars, Back to Me, Burn, Fuk Sumn, Carnival, Beg Forgiveness and other tracks.
The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and became Ye's eleventh number-one album.
Its biggest hit was Carnival featuring Rich the Kid and Playboi Carti, which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100.
Vultures 2 arrived on August 3, 2024. It includes Slide, Time Moving Slow, Field Trip, Fried, Promotion, 530, River, Lifestyle and Sky City. The album debuted at number two on the Billboard 200.
BULLY
Ye began publicly presenting work on BULLY in 2024. After a series of preliminary versions and delays, the full album was released on March 28, 2026 through YZY/gamma.
The standard edition contains 18 tracks, including KING, THIS A MUST, FATHER, ALL THE LOVE, PUNCH DRUNK, BULLY, HIGHS AND LOWS, PREACHER MAN, BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, DAMN, LAST BREATH and THIS ONE HERE.
Musically, BULLY revisits several techniques from different periods of West's career: chopped soul samples appear alongside electronic music, trap and short, fragmented compositions. The album debuted at number two on the Billboard 200.
On June 19, 2026, an expanded 32-track edition titled BULLY — DELUXE was released.
Public controversies and their consequences
Kanye West's public image has almost always been accompanied by controversy, but during the 2020s the consequences became especially serious. Antisemitic statements and other offensive remarks led to the loss of major business partners and significantly affected his public reputation.
In January 2026, Ye publicly apologised for his antisemitic statements and said that his health condition was not an excuse for the harm he had caused.
For a musical biography, this period is important primarily because the artist's public behaviour began to directly affect the distribution of his projects, commercial relationships and live activity.
Kanye West's production style
Kanye West's historical importance is connected not only with rap but also with his constant changes in the methods used to create music.
The early period was built around soul sampling. West sped up vocal fragments, changed their pitch and created new rhythmic structures around them. This approach can be heard particularly clearly in Through the Wire and in numerous production works from the early 2000s.
On Late Registration, the samples gained an orchestral environment through his collaboration with Jon Brion. Graduation significantly expanded the synthesizer and electronic side of his music.
808s & Heartbreak shifted the focus toward drum machines, Auto-Tune and minimalist keyboards. My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy represented the opposite approach — an extremely dense recording with a large number of contributors and layers of sound.
On Yeezus, West changed direction again, removing many familiar elements and leaving sharp rhythms, noise, synthesizers and industrial electronics.
Jesus Is King and Donda made the human choir and gospel central musical elements.
Sampling
Sampling remains one of the main ways Kanye West thinks about music. His works have used material from artists across different eras — from Chaka Khan, Ray Charles, Curtis Mayfield and Nina Simone to King Crimson, Daft Punk and Can.
The selected fragment often becomes not merely decoration but the foundation of the entire new composition. In Through the Wire, Chaka Khan's voice forms the melodic framework; in Power, material from King Crimson is integrated into contemporary rap; and in Stronger, Daft Punk becomes a connecting point between hip-hop and club-oriented electronic music.
Creative method
Beginning in the late 2000s, West's albums were increasingly created by large teams. He combines the work of multiple producers, songwriters, instrumentalists and engineers, repeatedly restructuring the original material.
For this reason, his role is better described not only as the direct creator of every individual sound, but also as the director of the overall musical concept. Even albums involving dozens of contributors usually retain a clearly recognisable character specific to a particular period.
Influence on hip-hop
Kanye West's influence is closely connected with the fact that different albums offered radically different models for the development of mainstream hip-hop.
The College Dropout expanded the space of commercial rap for personal and social stories that were not tied to traditional gangsta-rap aesthetics.
Graduation brought rap closer to synthesizer-driven electronic pop and large concert venues.
808s & Heartbreak helped normalise the combination of emotionally open lyrics, singing, Auto-Tune and minimalist electronic production.
My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy presented the rap album as a large-scale collaborative work, while Yeezus brought one of the biggest commercial hip-hop releases of its era closer to industrial and experimental electronics.
The Life of Pablo demonstrated that in the digital era, even a major album that had already been released could continue to be edited and changed.
Not every idea used by West was invented by him. His influence lay primarily in his ability to bring methods and sounds from less mainstream areas of soul, electronic and experimental music into the centre of popular culture.
Grammy Awards and achievements
Kanye West has won 24 Grammy Awards. Among his award-winning works are The College Dropout, Jesus Walks, Gold Digger, Stronger, Good Life, Run This Town, Power, All of the Lights, Watch the Throne, Jesus Is King, Jail and Hurricane.
Vultures 1 became his eleventh album to reach number one on the Billboard 200 in 2024.

The significance of Kanye West
Kanye West's career is unusual in that almost every major stage was built around rejecting the successful formula of the previous one. The soul samples of his early albums gave way to the synthesizer-driven Graduation, the emotional electronics of 808s & Heartbreak, the maximalism of My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, the industrial sharpness of Yeezus, the fragmented structure of The Life of Pablo and the gospel of the Jesus Is King and Donda period.
His production thinking remains especially important. West repeatedly took methods that already existed in soul, electronic and experimental music and reshaped them for a mainstream hip-hop audience. Because of this, his influence extends far beyond his own recordings.
At the same time, Ye's public controversies became a significant part of the later history of his career and had real professional consequences. These events do not erase the musical influence of his work, but they are an essential part of a complete biography of the artist.
From The College Dropout and 808s & Heartbreak to Yeezus, Donda and his later projects, Kanye West's career demonstrates a rare willingness to continually rebuild his own musical language. It is precisely this ability to radically change his creative method that made him one of the most influential and, at the same time, controversial figures in the modern history of hip-hop.
