Татьяна Буланова
Iryna Mykolaivna Bilyk (Ukrainian: Ірина Миколаївна Білик) is a Ukrainian singer, songwriter and composer, and one of the key figures in Ukrainian pop music of the 1990s and 2000s. She was born on April 6, 1970, in Kyiv. Bilyk holds the titles of People’s Artist of Ukraine and Honored Artist of Ukraine and is a recipient of the Order of Princess Olga, 3rd Class.
Bilyk was among the first Ukrainian pop performers of the post-Soviet era to build a major career largely around her own songwriting. In the 1990s, the albums Нова, Так просто and Фарби helped shape a recognizable style of contemporary Ukrainian pop, while the songs «Так просто», «А я пливу», «Одинокая», «Фарби», «Я іду на війну», «Я буду» and «Мовчати» became some of her best-known works. In the 2000s, she expanded her repertoire with Polish- and Russian-language recordings while retaining the songwriter-driven foundation of her music.
Childhood and first songs
Iryna Bilyk began singing in early childhood. According to her official biography, she showed an interest in singing from the age of four, studied dance and ballet, and at six joined the children’s ensemble «Сонечко», with which she performed and toured.
She attended music and theatre studios and studied piano. She wrote her first song at around the age of ten. Songwriting later became a defining part of her career: Bilyk did not limit herself to being a performer and wrote the music and lyrics for a substantial part of her repertoire.
In the late 1980s, she began developing her own programme, and in 1989 entered the R. M. Glier Kyiv State Music College to study pop vocals. That same year, she took part in the «Червона рута» festival.
«Цей дощ надовго» and the first album
In 1990, at the «Весняні надії» festival in Vinnytsia, Bilyk met Yuriy Nikitin, Heorhiy Uchaikin and Zhan Bolotov. Soon afterwards, they formed the group «Цей дощ надовго».
Yuriy Nikitin later played a major role in the development of Bilyk’s professional career and in Ukrainian music management more broadly. Musicians who worked with Bilyk later formed the production structure «Нова».
Her first album, Кувала зозуля, appeared in 1990. It did not yet bring Bilyk the mass popularity she would achieve several years later, but it established the defining feature of her future career — a focus on contemporary, original Ukrainian pop music.
First music videos and «Я розкажу»
In 1992, Bilyk filmed her first professional music video, for the song «Лише твоя». During the same period, she became a laureate of the festival «Пісенний вернісаж. Нова українська хвиля».
In 1993, the singer graduated from the Glier music college. She performed at the «Марія» and «Слов'янський базар» festivals, worked on television and gradually became a prominent figure on Ukraine’s emerging music scene.
In 1994, she released the album Я розкажу. Iryna Bilyk’s music of this period stood between traditional popular song and contemporary pop music, although her own distinctive songwriting voice was already becoming increasingly apparent.
«Нова» and the first major tour
The real breakthrough came in the middle of the decade. In 1995, Bilyk released the album Нова and embarked on a tour of the same name.
For the Ukrainian pop industry of the time, a large nationwide concert tour by a domestic artist was still relatively unusual. Bilyk staged her first major solo show at the Ukraina Palace in Kyiv and gradually moved from the ranks of promising performers into the group of the country’s leading pop stars.
Her success was particularly significant because a substantial part of the programme was performed in Ukrainian at a time when the post-Soviet mass music market remained closely tied to Russian-language pop.
«Так просто»
In 1996, Bilyk released the album Так просто. Its title track became one of the defining hits of her early career.
That same year, she received the honorary title of Honored Artist of Ukraine. At the «Таврійські ігри» festival, she was recognized with the «Золота Жар-птиця» award, including in the Singer of the Year category.
In 1997, she embarked on the large nationwide «Так просто» tour. Bilyk performed dozens of concerts in major cities across Ukraine, while her shows at the Ukraina Palace in Kyiv were held to full houses.
«Фарби» and the peak of her Ukrainian-language period
At the end of 1997, Bilyk released Фарби, one of the central albums in her discography.
It included «А я пливу», one of the most recognizable Ukrainian pop songs of the 1990s. The album also featured «Одинокая», «Фарби», «Щастя моє», «Я не знаю», «Серце», «Сонце», «Те, чого нема» and «Я буду».
According to the singer’s official biography, Фарби sold more than one million copies in Ukraine alone. For the Ukrainian music market of the 1990s, this was an exceptional figure.
In 1998, Bilyk embarked on the stadium tour «Фарби неба» with Linda and Maksim Fadeev. The concerts were staged in sports palaces and other large venues.
By the end of the decade, Bilyk was seen not simply as a popular singer, but as an artist who had helped define the visual and musical aesthetics of Ukrainian pop. She regularly changed her stage image, invested heavily in music videos, and turned each new album into a distinct visual era.
«ОМА»
Her next studio album, ОМА, was released in 2000. On it, Bilyk continued moving away from traditional pop arrangements toward a more contemporary electronic sound.
The album was supported by major concerts at the Ukraina Palace. The title «ОМА» was also connected with one of Bilyk’s experiments outside music — her own clothing collection.
This period demonstrated how important visual presentation had become to her work. Her music videos, photography, album artwork and costumes often changed together with the musical material.
The Polish-language album Bilyk
In the early 2000s, the singer made an attempt to enter the Polish market.
In 2002, she released the Polish-language album Bilyk. Part of her material was adapted specifically for a Polish audience. The project attracted attention in Poland, and Bilyk herself was recognized at the Yach Film music video festival.
It remains a separate and unusual episode in her discography: unlike most Ukrainian artists of the period, Bilyk recorded a full album specifically for another language market.
«Країна» and the duet with Skryabin
In 2003, Bilyk released the album Країна. One of its most important recordings was «Мовчати», performed with Andriy Kuzmenko and the band «Скрябін».
Over time, «Мовчати» became one of the best-known Ukrainian duets of the early 2000s. Its restrained arrangement and dialogue between the two performers stood apart from Bilyk’s more flamboyant pop hits of the late 1990s.
The singer returned to the song repeatedly in later years. After the beginning of the full-scale war, she presented a new version of the track.
Shift toward Russian-language repertoire
In 2004, Bilyk’s career took a notable turn with the release of Любовь. Яд, her first full-length Russian-language studio album.
It included «Любовь. Яд», «Снег», «Если ты хочешь» and other songs. The record significantly expanded her audience outside Ukraine.
«Снег» became one of the best-known hits of this period. Russian-language material subsequently occupied a substantial place in both her concert programmes and studio work.
The move into another language did not mean abandoning her Ukrainian catalogue: songs from the 1990s continued to form the core of Bilyk’s major concerts.
The charity project «Допомогти так легко»
In 2006, Bilyk released the charity project Допомогти так легко, connected with a tour of the same name.
The tour covered all 24 regional centres of Ukraine. Funds raised were directed toward charitable programmes supporting children. The music video for «Рябина алая» featured children from social care institutions alongside the singer.
This release is more accurately considered separately from her main studio discography, as it was primarily connected with a charitable campaign.
«На бис» and the title of People’s Artist
In 2008, Iryna Bilyk was awarded the title of People’s Artist of Ukraine.
That same year, she embarked on the «20 років разом» tour, celebrating her long stage career, and released the album На бис.
The record included new songs as well as material from previous years, among them «Такси», «Не ревную», «Подарю тебе» and other works from her Russian-language period.
By this point, Bilyk belonged to the generation of artists who had helped establish the professional Ukrainian show-business industry of the 1990s, while continuing to release contemporary pop material on a regular basis.
Television and large-scale projects
Bilyk has appeared in numerous major television programmes. In 2007, she took part in «Танці з зірками-2», where her partner was choreographer Dmytro Dikusar.
In 2013, she became a coach on the television project «Битва хорів».
That same year, together with TIK, she staged the unusual concert marathon «Кращі українські хіти»: the artists performed 24 concerts in 30 days. The achievement was recorded by the Ukrainian Book of Records.
«Рассвет»
In 2014, Bilyk released the studio album Рассвет, her eleventh numbered studio record.
By this point, her approach to creating material had changed. Whereas on her earlier albums Bilyk was often the principal or sole writer of both music and lyrics, on later recordings she increasingly worked with outside songwriters.
Nevertheless, lyrical pop remained the foundation of her style: relationships, separation, loneliness and emotional dependence continued to be central themes.
«Без грима»
In 2017, Bilyk released the album Без грима. She presented it as a particularly personal work.
The record became her twelfth studio album and, to date, remains her most recent full-length solo studio release. Afterwards, she largely shifted toward individual singles, new versions of earlier songs and collaborative recordings.
Awards
Official recognition of Bilyk’s career includes several major state honours.
- 1996 — Honored Artist of Ukraine;
- 2008 — People’s Artist of Ukraine;
- 2020 — Order of Princess Olga, 3rd Class.
In addition to state honours, Bilyk has received numerous Ukrainian music awards. The «Золота Жар-птиця» prize at the «Таврійські ігри» festival was particularly significant: in the late 1990s, she received awards as Singer of the Year, while Так просто and Фарби were recognized among the leading releases of their time.
Songwriting
One of the defining features of Iryna Bilyk’s career is the songwriter-driven nature of her early catalogue. She independently wrote the music and lyrics for many of her major hits.
«А я пливу», for example, was written entirely by Bilyk herself. The same applies to a substantial part of the material from the Нова through Фарби period.
This distinguished her from the traditional pop model in which singers often performed material written entirely by professional composers and lyricists. Bilyk shaped her musical identity not only through her voice and visual image, but through the songs themselves.
Musical style
Pop music forms the basis of her work, although her sound has changed considerably with each era.
Her early material combined Ukrainian popular song traditions with the synthesizer pop of the late 1980s. By the mid-1990s, the arrangements had become more contemporary and closer to European pop. Фарби introduced more complex electronics and a distinctive studio sound, while ОМА continued the movement toward an electronic aesthetic.
Her Russian-language recordings of the 2000s were more strongly oriented toward a broad pop audience and lyrical ballads.
Despite constant changes in her visual image and arrangements, the core of the songs remained recognizable: straightforward melodies, emotionally direct lyrics and her characteristic, slightly fragile vocal delivery.
Personal life
The singer’s personal life has attracted considerable attention from Ukrainian media for many years, although it would be inaccurate to describe all of her known partners as official spouses.
At different times, Bilyk was in long-term relationships with producer Yuriy Nikitin, model Andriy Overchuk, choreographer Dmytro Koliadenko and dancer Dmytro Dikusar.
Her elder son, Hlib, was born during her relationship with Andriy Overchuk. Bilyk later married photographer, director and artist Aslan Ahmadov. In 2015, the couple had a son, Tabriz, through surrogacy. In 2021, the singer announced her divorce from Ahmadov.
After the beginning of the full-scale war
Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the Ukrainian-language direction of Bilyk’s work once again became significantly more prominent.
She began releasing new Ukrainian versions of well-known songs. In 2022, an updated version of «Мовчати» appeared, followed in 2023 by a new version of «Я іду на війну», a song originally recorded in the 1990s.
In subsequent years, Ukrainian-language versions and reinterpretations of other works from her catalogue also appeared. In 2025, Bilyk released «Нас нема», a Ukrainian-language version of the song «Нас нет», as well as a new arrangement of the traditional song «Цвіте терен».
At the same time, she continued recording new material and duets with artists from a younger generation.
The «55» tour and new recordings
In 2025, the year Iryna Bilyk turned 55, she embarked on the large anniversary tour «55». The concert programme brought together songs from different decades, from her Ukrainian-language hits of the 1990s to later recordings.
During the same period, new collaborations and updated versions of older material were released. Bilyk recorded «Очі в очі» with ESPHYR, collaborated with Masha Kondratenko and worked with other contemporary Ukrainian female artists.
In 2026, Bilyk continued to release new music and collaborations. On February 14, an updated version of «Божевільна» appeared; on March 5, she released the duet «Не ти, а я» with Anna Butkevych; and on April 6, the singer officially issued a Ukrainian-language version of «Про любов».
Iryna Bilyk’s place in Ukrainian pop music
Historically, the most important period of Bilyk’s career remains the 1990s. It was then that she became one of the first Ukrainian pop artists of a new type: a songwriter performing her own material, a full-scale solo concert artist with major tours, music videos, changing visual concepts and a dedicated production team.
Her significance is not limited to the number of recognizable songs she created. Нова, Так просто and especially Фарби appeared at a moment when the modern Ukrainian pop industry was effectively being built anew. Bilyk demonstrated that a Ukrainian-language pop artist could fill major concert halls and stadiums, release commercially successful albums and create a distinct visual identity around each new record.
Her career later changed direction several times — a Polish-language album, a Russian-language period, television work, a return to Ukrainian repertoire and new versions of classic songs. Yet the central part of Iryna Bilyk’s legacy remains the songwriter-driven catalogue she created in the 1990s and early 2000s: songs that became part of the history of modern Ukrainian popular music.
