Ellie Goulding (full name — Elena Jane Goulding; born December 30, 1986, in Hereford, England) — is a British singer-songwriter whose music combines pop, synth-pop, electropop, electronic dance music and acoustic elements rooted in her early interest in folk.
Goulding began her career in the late 2000s, and in 2010 she simultaneously topped the BBC Sound of 2010 poll and received the BRIT Critics' Choice award. Her debut album Lights reached number one in the UK. Later, Halcyon, Brightest Blue and Higher Than Heaven also topped the UK Albums Chart.

Childhood in Herefordshire
Ellie Goulding was born in Hereford and grew up in rural Herefordshire in a family of four children. Her parents divorced when Ellie was around five years old. Her mother worked in a shop, while her stepfather was a lorry driver.
The family lived fairly modestly, and a professional music career was not seen as an obvious path. Goulding later recalled that she did not always even have the space to sing freely at home: she shared a room with her sisters, and music remained a personal interest for a long time.
As a child, she learned to play the clarinet and later picked up the guitar. Folk music had a noticeable influence on her after being introduced to it by her uncle. Among the artists she listened to at the time were Alison Krauss and Fleetwood Mac.
Goulding learned guitar partly through fingerpicking — a style of playing with the fingers associated with folk and singer-songwriter traditions. These acoustic habits did not disappear when she moved toward electronic pop: guitar remained a regular part of her live performances and many of her ballads.
University and First Songs
After school, Goulding enrolled at the University of Kent in Canterbury, where she studied drama.
It was at university that she first had the space to play guitar regularly and write her own songs. One of the first turning points came at a student music competition, where her performance was noticed by someone connected with music management.
At first, Goulding performed almost like a conventional acoustic singer-songwriter — voice and guitar, small gigs and material close to folk.
Gradually, she began looking for producers online. One of the first was Frankmusik, to whom Ellie sent the acoustic song «Wish I Stayed». Its electronic reworking showed her that her own compositions did not have to remain within a traditional singer-songwriter format.
Even more important was meeting producer Starsmith, whose real name is Fin Dow-Smith. Together, they began combining the acoustic foundation of Goulding's songs with synthesizers, electronic drums and programming.

Her first official single was «Under the Sheets», released in November 2009. It reached number 53 on the UK chart.

Her debut album Lights was released in March 2010 and immediately reached number one on the UK Albums Chart.
Starsmith produced a significant portion of the material. The album combined acoustic guitars, synthesizers, electronic beats and Goulding's distinctive vocals, which were often recorded in multiple layers.
Alongside «Starry Eyed», the original edition included «Guns and Horses», «The Writer», «Wish I Stayed» and other early songs.
Later in 2010, the album received an expanded reissue titled Bright Lights. It introduced two recordings that became especially important to Goulding's subsequent career: «Lights» and her cover of Elton John's «Your Song».
«Your Song» was used in John Lewis's Christmas advertising campaign and reached number two in the UK.
In April 2011, Goulding performed the song at the wedding reception of Prince William and Catherine Middleton at Buckingham Palace.
Meanwhile, «Lights» took on an especially significant life in the United States. The song gradually climbed the American charts and reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100, transforming Goulding from a successful British newcomer into an international artist.
Halcyon
Her second album, Halcyon, was released in 2012.
While the electronic production on Lights often contrasted with a relatively bright acoustic foundation, the material here became denser and darker. The arrangements featured more expansive synthesizer spaces, heavier drums and choral vocal layers.
The lead single was «Anything Could Happen». The album also included «Figure 8», «Explosions», «My Blood», «Only You» and other tracks.
Halcyon initially debuted at number two in the UK, but later climbed to number one and spent a total of three weeks at the top.
This period also marked the beginning of one of Goulding's longest-running collaborations — with Calvin Harris.
In 2012, she recorded vocals for «I Need Your Love», which appeared on Harris's album 18 Months. The song reached number four in the UK.
Halcyon Days and «Burn»
In 2013, an expanded edition titled Halcyon Days was released.
It included «Burn», produced by Greg Kurstin. The song became Ellie Goulding's first solo single to top the UK Singles Chart and remained at number one for three weeks.
This period also produced «Goodness Gracious» and Goulding's version of The Waterboys' «How Long Will I Love You», recorded for the film About Time and BBC Children in Need.
In February 2014, Ellie Goulding received the BRIT Award for British Female Solo Artist. It was her second BRIT victory after Critics' Choice four years earlier.
That same year, she worked with Calvin Harris again — this time on «Outside» for his album Motion. The single reached number six in the UK.
Love Me Like You Do
At the beginning of 2015, «Love Me Like You Do» was released for the soundtrack to Fifty Shades of Grey.
The song was written by Max Martin, Savan Kotecha, Ali Payami, Ilya Salmanzadeh and Tove Lo. Goulding therefore appears here specifically as the performer rather than as one of the songwriters.
The single became one of the biggest commercial successes of her career. In the UK, it spent four weeks at number one and remained on the chart for around a year.
«Love Me Like You Do» earned Goulding her first Grammy nomination — for Best Pop Solo Performance.
The song itself was also nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Original Song. Technically, however, nominations in this category are awarded to the songwriters, so describing it as a personal Golden Globe nomination for Ellie Goulding would not be entirely accurate.
Delirium
Her third studio album, Delirium, was released in November 2015.
It is the most explicitly pop-oriented work in Goulding's early discography. She collaborated with Max Martin, Greg Kurstin, Ryan Tedder and other major producers.
Instead of the intimate folktronica of her early years, the foundation became large-scale contemporary pop: powerful drums, synth bass, big choruses and dense vocal arrangements.
The album reached number three on the UK Albums Chart.
It included «On My Mind», «Something in the Way You Move», «Army», «Lost and Found», «Keep on Dancin'» and the previously released «Love Me Like You Do».
Goulding dedicated «Army» to her close friend Hannah Lowe. The song reveals a more personal side of Delirium: beneath the large-scale pop production, Ellie's familiar habit of writing directly about specific relationships remained intact.
The album was followed by an extensive world tour. After several years of almost continuous studio and touring work, Goulding later reduced the intensity of her live schedule.
Still Falling for You and the Period Between Albums
In 2016, «Still Falling for You» was released for the film Bridget Jones's Baby. It reached number 11 in the UK.
The next several years passed without a new studio album, although the singer continued releasing standalone singles and taking part in collaborations.
In 2017, she recorded «First Time» with Kygo. This was followed by «Close to Me» with Diplo and Swae Lee, «Sixteen», and «Hate Me» with Juice WRLD.
This period allowed Goulding to work with electronic and urban pop styles without having to fit every recording into the broader concept of an album.
River and Her Third Number-One Single
At the end of 2019, Ellie Goulding recorded her own version of Joni Mitchell's «River».
The song was released as a Christmas single and reached number one on the UK Singles Chart during the final week of 2019.
After «Burn» and «Love Me Like You Do», it became the third UK number-one single of her career.
Brightest Blue
Her fourth studio album, Brightest Blue, was released in July 2020 and topped the UK Albums Chart.
The record was deliberately divided into two sections.
The main Brightest Blue section focused on more personal, songwriter-driven material. It included «Flux», «Power», «Love I'm Given», «New Heights» and other tracks.
A separate section, EG.0, consisted mostly of more commercial collaborations, including «Close to Me», «Hate Me» and «Worry About Me» with blackbear.
This structure allowed Goulding to literally separate two lines of her career: the writer of more intimate songs and the vocalist who regularly works with major electronic and pop producers.
Higher Than Heaven
Her fifth studio album, Higher Than Heaven, was released on April 7, 2023.
After the relatively personal Brightest Blue, Goulding deliberately focused on dance-pop. She later acknowledged that this album was less connected to her own biography and more concerned with the process of creating effective pop music.
Its singles included «Easy Lover» with Big Sean, «Let It Die», «Like a Saviour» and «By the End of the Night».
Higher Than Heaven debuted at number one in the UK and became her fourth chart-topping album after Lights, Halcyon and Brightest Blue.
Miracle with Calvin Harris
Almost simultaneously with the album came one of Goulding's biggest dance hits — «Miracle» with Calvin Harris.
The single was released in March 2023 and built around the sound of late-1990s and early-2000s trance and eurodance.
«Miracle» spent eight non-consecutive weeks at number one on the UK chart.

In November 2025, «Destiny» appeared — her first new solo song following the Higher Than Heaven period.
According to Goulding, it was written after the breakdown of her marriage and became one of the first songs of a new phase in which she stopped avoiding direct discussion of her own life.
While Higher Than Heaven had deliberately pushed personal history into the background, the new material moved in the opposite direction.
The Return of Starry Eyed
At the beginning of 2026, «Starry Eyed» unexpectedly found a new wave of popularity.

In January 2026, «Starry Eyed» re-entered the official UK Singles Chart more than fifteen years after its original release.
For Goulding, it became a rare example of an early song receiving a full second life with a different generation of listeners.
I Know Too Much
On September 4, 2026, Ellie Goulding released her sixth studio album, I Know Too Much, through Polydor Records.
Her main production partner and executive producer was Jack Rochon. Goulding said she first became aware of his work through TikTok, after which the two began writing music together.
While the previous album had largely been an exercise in dance-pop, I Know Too Much once again centers on personal experience. In its songs, Goulding examines relationships, mistrust, memories, changes in her own life and attempts to understand the events of recent years.
The album consists of ten tracks:

The closing track, «Ravers», by contrast, returns to dance music. The album therefore does not choose between acoustic Ellie Goulding and electronic Ellie Goulding — both sides exist within the same record.
Hush with Muse
In June 2026, Goulding also appeared on «Hush» by Muse.
The song appeared on Muse's album The Wow! Signal.
For Goulding, it was an unusual collaboration: despite her large number of recordings with electronic producers and pop artists, collaborations with major British rock bands are much rarer in her discography.
Voice and Musical Style
Ellie Goulding's voice is easily recognizable for its high, light tone, breathy attack and distinctive articulation.
Strictly defining it simply as a «soprano» is not especially useful: in her studio recordings, the academic voice type matters less than the way Goulding uses different registers and processing techniques.

In August 2019, Ellie Goulding married art dealer Caspar Jopling.
In 2021, the couple had a son, Arthur.
In February 2024, Goulding and Jopling publicly stated that they had been living separately for some time and had ended their relationship.
Later, the singer began a relationship with actor Beau Minniear. On March 6, 2026, the couple had a daughter, Iris Edaline.
Goulding tries not to make her children part of her public image and speaks about family life far less frequently than she does about music and environmental work.
Creative Journey
