DJ Aligator (real name — Ali Asghar Movasat; born March 10, 1975, in Tehran, Iran) is a Danish DJ, composer and music producer of Iranian origin. He gained international recognition with «The Whistle Song», one of the most recognizable European dance tracks of the early 2000s. At different stages of his career, he has worked with eurodance, trance, dance, club music and elements of house.
His first major releases appeared under the name DJ Aligator Project. In addition to solo work, Movasat collaborated with Dr. Alban, Arash, MC Вспышкин, Steve Aoki, Timmy Trumpet and other musicians, and also worked on remixes. His studio discography spans the period from Payback Time in 2000 to Next Level in 2012, after which he mainly released individual singles.
Childhood in Iran and move to Denmark
Ali Movasat was born in Tehran. His childhood coincided with the Iran–Iraq War. In the autobiography DJ Aligator: Fra børnesoldat til superstjerne, published in Denmark in 2025, the musician said that at the age of thirteen he found himself on the front line as a child soldier. Soon afterward, he left Iran and moved to Denmark, where his older sister was already living.
His parents remained in Iran, so for the teenager the move meant not only changing countries and languages but also separation from his family. In later interviews, Movasat repeatedly connected his attitude toward music with this period of his life.
In Denmark, he continued studying music. Biographical materials mention classical piano, jazz and music theory lessons, followed later by studies at Rytmisk Musikkonservatorium in Copenhagen.
From keyboards to DJing
Movasat initially focused mainly on instrumental music. His interest in club culture developed later, when he began working as a DJ and had the opportunity to constantly observe how dance floors reacted to different rhythms, tempos and arrangements.
During the 1990s, he participated in several Danish electronic projects. One of them was Factual Beat, which was also associated with future Aqua member René Dif. Movasat later worked in the project Zoom; in 1999, the track «Words» featuring him was released.
Gradually, his own studio work became the main focus. For the new project, he chose the name DJ Aligator, with Aligator traditionally spelled with a single «l».
The Whistle Song
The breakthrough came in 2000 with the release of the debut single «The Whistle Song». The recording was built around a simple whistle motif, a hard dance rhythm and short vocal phrases.
According to DJ Aligator’s own recollections, the idea came after a club performance where members of the audience were using whistles in time with the music. That sound became the starting point for the future track.
The credited writers are DJ Aligator, Danish rapper Al Agami and Holger Lagerfeldt. Movasat himself produced the recording.
«The Whistle Song» topped the Danish singles chart and became a major hit across Scandinavia. Its first UK release in 2000 reached only number 57, but after being reissued in January 2002, the track climbed to number five on the UK Singles Chart and remained on the chart for ten weeks.
Following its UK success, DJ Aligator performed the song on the television program Top of the Pops.
Payback Time
In October 2000, the debut album Payback Time was released. In addition to «The Whistle Song», it included «Lollipop», «Doggy Style», «Turn Up the Music», «Bounce 2 This» and other tracks.
DJ Aligator’s early material combined eurodance, trance and harder club-oriented electronic music. The songs were characterized by high tempos, simple synthesizer themes, a heavy four-on-the-floor beat and short vocal phrases.
After «The Whistle Song», other singles by the project also became successful in Denmark, including «Lollipop» and «Stomp!».
The Sound of Scandinavia
In 2002, the second album The Sound of Scandinavia was released. It reached number three on the Danish albums chart and became DJ Aligator’s most successful full-length release on the domestic market.
During this period, the musician expanded his range of collaborations. One of them was a new version of «I Like to Move It», recorded with Dr. Alban. The original track belonged to Reel 2 Real, while DJ Aligator’s version received new electronic production and vocals by Dr. Alban.
The album also included «Mosquito», «Stomp!», «Temple of India», «Interlude — Human Beatbox» and other tracks.
Remix work
In addition to his own recordings, DJ Aligator also produced remixes. One of the best-known examples is his reworking of Moldovan group O-Zone «Dragostea Din Tei», created together with producer CS-Jay.
Two versions were officially released — DJ Aligator vs. CS-Jay Radio Edit and Club Version. They were included on international remix releases of «Dragostea Din Tei».
His collaboration with CS-Jay later continued on Movasat’s own recordings.
Music Is My Language
In 2005, DJ Aligator released his third studio album Music Is My Language. During this period, his music became noticeably more diverse: alongside familiar club electronics, the album featured compositions with Middle Eastern melodic elements and guest vocalists.
He recorded the title track «Music Is My Language» with Iranian-Swedish singer Arash. Both musicians participated in writing the song.
Another unusual collaboration was «Davaj Davaj» with Russian artist MC Вспышкин. The single appeared in 2004 and was later included on Music Is My Language.
The album also features «Protect Your Ears», «Do You Realise», «Angel», «Countdown» and other tracks.
Iranian influence in his music
Although Movasat’s professional career developed in Denmark and was closely connected with the Scandinavian electronic scene, his Iranian background has periodically appeared in his music.
This is especially clear in «Music Is My Language» with Arash, where the electronic foundation is combined with Persian vocals. In later interviews, DJ Aligator said that he sees himself as someone who grew up between two cultures and tries to preserve elements of both.
Kiss My B-Ass
In 2009, the album Kiss My B-Ass was released. By that time, DJ Aligator’s music had shifted from the characteristic eurodance of the early 2000s toward club production that was more contemporary for the end of the decade.
The album included «Calling You», «Shine», «Kaos», «Meet Her at the Loveparade 2007» and other tracks.
At the same time, Movasat did not abandon his early aesthetic completely: whistle motifs, aggressive club rhythms and deliberately straightforward arrangements remained recognizable elements of his music.
Next Level
In November 2012, the fifth studio album Next Level was released. On it, DJ Aligator leaned more strongly toward trance and progressive dance.
Tracks associated with this period include «Starting Over», «Fist Pump» and «The Perfect Match», recorded with Danish trance producer Daniel Kandi.
After Next Level, Movasat stopped releasing numbered albums on a regular basis and focused mainly on individual singles, collaborations and DJ work.
The Whistle with Steve Aoki and Timmy Trumpet
In 2022, Steve Aoki and Timmy Trumpet returned to the central motif of DJ Aligator’s early career. Together with Movasat, they recorded the single «The Whistle» — a new interpretation of the idea behind «The Whistle Song».
DJ Aligator is credited among the songwriters and producers. The recording also uses elements connected with the original 2000 track.
The release connected DJ Aligator’s early European club sound with the festival EDM of a new generation.
Autobiography
In 2025, the book «DJ Aligator: Fra børnesoldat til superstjerne» («DJ Aligator: from child soldier to superstar») was published in Denmark, written by Ali Movasat together with journalist Nicolai Lisberg.
In the book, the musician spoke in detail for the first time about his childhood in Iran, events during the Iran–Iraq War, his escape to Denmark, his first years in the new country, the beginning of his music career and the story behind «The Whistle Song».
The autobiography significantly expanded on earlier short biographies of DJ Aligator, in which his early years were usually described simply as a move from Iran to Denmark.
Later releases
After Next Level, DJ Aligator continued regularly releasing individual singles, working with trance, techno, house and contemporary festival electronic music. During the 2020s, new solo and collaborative recordings appeared in his catalog.
2026 was particularly active: Gator Records released «Feel The Beat Drop», «Madar (Mother)», «Forever», «Silent Heroes» and «No Other Version». DJ Aligator therefore continues releasing new music more than a quarter of a century after his breakthrough with «The Whistle Song».
Musical style
The foundation of DJ Aligator’s early sound was eurodance, trance and club dance. Unlike the more melodic representatives of European dance-pop in the late 1990s, Movasat often used a harder rhythmic pattern, sharp synthesizer timbres and minimalist vocal hooks.
Sound effects played a particularly important role, becoming part of the composition itself. The most obvious example is the whistle in «The Whistle Song», but a similar principle was also used in other early tracks.
Later, his music incorporated progressive house, more contemporary trance and festival EDM aesthetics. Some recordings also use Persian and Middle Eastern motifs.
