Dido (born Florian Cloud de Bounevialle Armstrong; born December 25, 1971, in London) is a British singer, songwriter and musician. Her music combines pop, folk, trip-hop and electronic music. Dido gained international fame with her debut album «No Angel», the songs «Here with Me» and «Thank You», as well as her collaboration with Eminem on «Stan». Her second album, «Life for Rent», consolidated her success with the singles «White Flag», «Life for Rent» and «Sand in My Shoes». Her later works include «Safe Trip Home», «Girl Who Got Away» and «Still on My Mind».
Childhood and family
Dido was born on Christmas Day, December 25, 1971, in the Kensington district of London. Her father, William O'Malley Armstrong, was a publisher who worked for many years at Sidgwick & Jackson, including serving as managing director. Her mother, Clare Collins, was involved in poetry. The singer’s older brother, Rowland Constantine O'Malley Armstrong, better known as Rollo Armstrong, later became a producer and one of the founders of the electronic group Faithless.
The unusual name Dido had been used in her family since childhood. Although her birth certificate registered her as Florian Cloud de Bounevialle Armstrong, the singer has repeatedly explained that Dido is her real name rather than a stage name created later.
Musical education
Dido began studying music at an early age. From around the age of six, she attended the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. By her teenage years, she played piano, violin and recorder. This training later proved useful not only in performing songs, but also in studio work and composition.
After school, Dido studied law at Birkbeck, University of London while also working as a literary agent. She did not complete the course, choosing instead to focus on music.
Faithless and the first recordings
Dido’s first professional recordings were closely connected with her brother Rollo. In the mid-1990s, he helped form Faithless, a group combining house, trip-hop and electronic music. Dido was not a permanent member of the group, but she recorded vocal parts and performed with Faithless.
Her voice can be heard in the group’s early repertoire, including «Flowerstand Man» and «Hem of His Garment». Their collaboration later continued on songs such as «One Step Too Far», «No Roots», «Feelin' Good» and other recordings.
In 1995, Dido recorded a series of her own demos collected under the title «Odds & Ends». The material circulated as a promotional recording and helped her secure a contract in the United States. After representatives of Arista Records heard her songs, a deal for the release of her solo music was signed in late 1996.
No Angel
Dido’s debut studio album «No Angel» was released in the United States on June 1, 1999, through Arista Records and Cheeky Records. In the United Kingdom, the album received its full release later, in 2000. Dido worked on the record with Rollo Armstrong, Rick Nowels, Youth, Sister Bliss and other musicians and producers.
«No Angel» combined acoustic instruments, soft electronic rhythms and elements of trip-hop. The album included «Here with Me», «Thank You», «Hunter», «Don't Think of Me», «All You Want» and the title track «No Angel».
Her first notable success in the United States came with «Here with Me». The song was used as the theme for the television series «Roswell», helping introduce Dido to American audiences before her international breakthrough.
Thank You
The story of «Thank You» began before the release of «No Angel». In 1998, the song was featured in the closing credits of the film «Sliding Doors» starring Gwyneth Paltrow. It appeared on «No Angel» the following year and was later released as a standalone single.
In the United States, «Thank You» reached No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. However, the decisive role in the rapid growth of Dido’s fame was played by another song built around a sample from this track.
Stan with Eminem
American producer The 45 King used the opening of «Thank You» when creating the instrumental foundation for Eminem’s song «Stan». Dido’s vocal sample became the chorus of the track, which appeared on the 2000 album «The Marshall Mathers LP».
Dido gave permission for her vocals to be used and later appeared in the «Stan» music video as the pregnant girlfriend of the main character. The song reached No. 1 on the UK chart and became one of Eminem’s best-known singles. The success of «Stan» also dramatically increased interest in «Thank You» and the album «No Angel».
The worldwide success of No Angel
After «Stan», sales of «No Angel» rose sharply. The album reached No. 1 on the UK chart and spent seven weeks at the top. More than three million copies were sold in the United Kingdom, placing it among the best-selling studio albums in the history of the British market.
At the 2002 BRIT Awards, Dido received two major honors: British Female Solo Artist and British Album of the Year for «No Angel».
Life for Rent
Dido’s second studio album, «Life for Rent», was released in 2003. As with her debut, Rollo Armstrong played an important role in its creation. The main singles were «White Flag», «Life for Rent», «Don't Leave Home» and «Sand in My Shoes».
The album topped the UK Albums Chart and spent a total of ten weeks at No. 1. Around 2.9 million copies were sold in the United Kingdom. Together with «No Angel», it ranks among the most commercially successful British albums of the 21st century.
White Flag
«White Flag» became the biggest hit from the second album and one of Dido’s best-known solo songs. In the lyrics, the narrator acknowledges that the relationship has ended but refuses to pretend that her feelings are gone.
In 2004, Dido again won the BRIT Award for British Female Solo Artist, while «White Flag» was honored as Best British Single. The song also earned her her only individual Grammy nomination to date, in the category Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.
Touring and the break between albums
Following the success of «Life for Rent», Dido toured extensively. A recording of her concert at London’s Brixton Academy was released in 2005 as «Live at Brixton Academy».
After the tour ended, the singer reduced her concert activity and focused on new material. The death of her father, William Armstrong, in December 2006 occurred while she was working on her third album and became one of the major personal events of that period.
Safe Trip Home
Dido’s third studio album, «Safe Trip Home», was released in 2008. The recording featured Rollo Armstrong, Jon Brion, Brian Eno, Mick Fleetwood and other musicians.
The principal tracks included «Don't Believe in Love», «Quiet Times», «Grafton Street», «It Comes and It Goes» and «Look No Further». The album reached No. 2 on the UK chart.
Compared with her first two albums, «Safe Trip Home» relied less on the conventional radio-single format and more often used acoustic instruments, complex drum parts and intimate arrangements.
If I Rise and the Academy Award nomination
In 2010, Dido recorded «If I Rise» with Indian composer A. R. Rahman for Danny Boyle’s film «127 Hours».
The song was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2011. The music was written by A. R. Rahman, while the lyrics were written by Dido and Rollo Armstrong.
Girl Who Got Away
Dido’s fourth studio album, «Girl Who Got Away», was released in 2013, five years after «Safe Trip Home». It included «No Freedom», «End of Night», «Sitting on the Roof of the World», «Blackbird» and other songs.
A special place on the album is occupied by «Let Us Move On», recorded with American rapper Kendrick Lamar. In the United Kingdom, «Girl Who Got Away» reached No. 5 on the albums chart.
Greatest Hits
In November 2013, Dido released her first official compilation, «Greatest Hits». It included «Here with Me», «Thank You», «Hunter», «White Flag», «Life for Rent», «Don't Leave Home», «Sand in My Shoes», «No Freedom», «If I Rise», «Stan» and other recordings from different stages of her career.
A new song, «NYC», was also released for the compilation.
Still on My Mind
Dido’s fifth solo studio album, «Still on My Mind», was released on March 8, 2019. After several projects with different producers, she once again built the main creative work around collaboration with her brother Rollo. A significant part of the material was recorded at home.
The album included «Hurricanes», «Give You Up», «Hell After This», «Take You Home», «Friends», «Mad Love» and the title track «Still on My Mind». It reached No. 3 on the UK Albums Chart.
Return to the stage
The release of «Still on My Mind» was accompanied by Dido’s first major concert tour in roughly 15 years. In 2019, she began performing regularly again in Europe and North America, combining material from the new album with songs such as «Here with Me», «Thank You», «White Flag» and other earlier hits.
R Plus and continued work with Rollo
In 2019–2020, Dido took part in her brother’s project R Plus. She recorded vocals for «Summer Dress», «My Boy», «Those Were the Days» and «Together (In These Times)».
The expanded 2020 edition of the album «The Last Summer» was released under the joint credit R Plus & Dido. This work belongs to a separate collaborative project and is not Dido’s sixth solo album.
A new generation of listeners and the return of Thank You
During the 2020s, «Thank You» was repeatedly used in new pop and electronic recordings. In 2023, Dido appeared as a featured artist on Jason Derulo’s «When Love Sucks», which was built around elements of her hit.
In December of the same year, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Tiësto, Dido and W&W released «Thank You (Not So Bad)», a dance reworking of «Thank You». Dido re-recorded her vocal part for this version. The single returned her to the main UK chart for the first time in ten years.
In 2023, she also appeared on Caroline Polachek’s «Fly to You» alongside Grimes. The song was included on the album «Desire, I Want to Turn Into You».
Return to Faithless
Dido’s connection with Faithless remained intact three decades after her first recordings with the group. In September 2025, a new version of «Find A Way» was released featuring Dido and poet Suli Breaks. Dido recorded additional vocal parts for the track.
Musical style
Dido’s music lies at the intersection of pop, folk-pop and electronic music. On «No Angel» and «Life for Rent», acoustic guitars and piano are combined with programmed drums, synthesizers and production techniques associated with trip-hop and downtempo.
The electronic element is closely connected with her long-running collaboration with Rollo Armstrong. At the same time, Dido’s songs usually retain a traditional singer-songwriter structure in which vocal melody and lyrics remain central.
Her repertoire is dominated by songs about relationships, separation, memory, family and everyday events. Unlike many of the electronic projects with which she has collaborated, Dido’s solo music is rarely built around a club rhythm; electronic elements are more often used as part of a calm pop arrangement.
Personal life
Dido’s husband is British writer and screenwriter Rohan Gavin. In July 2011, the couple had a son, Stanley. The singer has generally kept her family life private and, after the birth of her child, reduced the number of performances and music releases for several years.
Rollo Armstrong is Dido’s older brother, not her husband. Their collaboration has continued since the 1990s: Rollo has contributed to the creation of most of her albums while also developing Faithless and his own electronic projects.

Dido today
After returning with «Still on My Mind», Dido has not released another full-length solo album, but she has continued to take part in collaborative projects. During the 2020s, the renewed interest of the electronic music scene in «Thank You» became particularly noticeable: a song first recorded in the 1990s became the foundation for several contemporary dance and pop releases.
At the same time, Dido continues to collaborate with Rollo and Faithless. Her main albums remain associated above all with two periods: the international success of «No Angel» and «Life for Rent» in the early 2000s, and her return to active studio and concert work with «Still on My Mind» in 2019.
