Deadmau5

deadmau5 is the stage project of Canadian producer, composer and electronic musician Joel Thomas Zimmerman. He was born on 5 January 1981 in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada. His music is most closely associated with progressive house, electro house and other areas of the electronic scene; Zimmerman also releases techno material under the separate alias TESTPILOT.

Since the late 2000s, deadmau5 has become one of the prominent figures in international electronic music thanks to tracks such as Faxing Berlin, Not Exactly, I Remember, Ghosts ’n’ Stuff, Strobe, Raise Your Weapon and The Veldt. Major elements of the project include his own label mau5trap, the distinctive mau5head helmet and the Cube live productions.

The origin of the name deadmau5

The story behind the stage name comes from an episode in Zimmerman’s early years online. After a computer malfunction, he discovered a dead mouse inside the case and told people about it on the internet. They began calling him the “dead mouse guy”. Because deadmouse was too long for the username character limit, the stylised form deadmau5 appeared, with the number 5 replacing part of the ending of the word mouse.

Originally, it was simply an online username, but it later became the name of his musical project and the foundation of its visual identity.

Early recordings and SectionZ

In the early 2000s, Zimmerman uploaded his own music to SectionZ, one of the online communities for independent electronic producers. The official deadmau5 timeline dates the beginning of his work under this name to around 2002.

His early material differs noticeably from the progressive house with which he later gained international recognition. These recordings featured ambient, downtempo, glitch, breakbeat, IDM and experimental electronic music.

In 2005, he released his debut studio album Get Scraped. His next full-length release was Vexillology, issued in November 2006 on Play Records. The album was already significantly closer to club-oriented house music and showed Zimmerman’s gradual transition from home-produced experimental electronics toward dance music production.

Faxing Berlin and Not Exactly

A key stage came in 2007 with the tracks Faxing Berlin and Not Exactly.

These works established the approach that became characteristic of early deadmau5 progressive house: extended track development, repeating synthesiser sequences, gradual addition of elements and a noticeably more restrained dramatic structure compared with the conventional short radio-single format.

It was during this period that the name deadmau5 began appearing more frequently in the sets of international house DJs and across the professional club scene.

The creation of mau5trap

In 2007, Zimmerman founded his own label, mau5trap. Initially it served as a platform for releasing his own music, but it gradually developed into an independent electronic label in its own right.

Over the years, mau5trap has released music by Feed Me, REZZ, ATTLAS, No Mana, i_o, BlackGummy, Noisia, Excision and other artists. The official deadmau5 timeline specifically highlights the label’s role in the catalogues of Feed Me, REZZ, Noisia, Excision and other electronic acts.

mau5trap is not limited to one genre: its catalogue includes progressive house, techno, electro, bass music, drum & bass and experimental electronic music.

Random Album Title

On 2 September 2008, deadmau5 released Random Album Title — his third studio album and one of the central works of his early discography.

The album included Faxing Berlin, Not Exactly and I Remember, a collaboration with American producer Kaskade.

The collaboration between deadmau5 and Kaskade had begun even earlier: their track Move for Me reached No. 1 on the US Billboard Dance/Mix Show Airplay chart in 2008. This success played an important role in taking deadmau5 beyond the specialised progressive-house scene.

I Remember later became one of the most recognisable collaborations between the two artists and played an important role in the history of their later Kx5 project.

mau5head

In 2008, deadmau5 performed for the first time wearing the distinctive helmet with large round ears known as the mau5head. The project’s official timeline links the first such performance to Nova Scotia.

Over time, numerous versions of the mau5head were created, ranging from relatively simple constructions to models with LED panels and programmable graphics.

The helmet became more than just a stage costume: it developed into a permanent element of the deadmau5 visual language alongside the logo and live production design.

For Lack of a Better Name

In 2009, deadmau5 released his fourth studio album, For Lack of a Better Name. Two of the best-known tracks in his catalogue are associated with this record — Ghosts ’n’ Stuff and Strobe.

deadmau5 recorded the vocal version of Ghosts ’n’ Stuff with Rob Swire, vocalist and one of the founders of Pendulum. The track combines electro house with a clearly defined song structure and became one of the artist’s signature live tracks.

Strobe, by contrast, represents the kind of extended instrumental composition more characteristic of Zimmerman. The track unfolds gradually: an atmospheric introduction gives way to the main progressive-house section without following a conventional pop-song structure.

Strobe later returned to the deadmau5 catalogue repeatedly in the form of new remixes and live versions. In 2024, an official remix series by Victor Ruiz, OddKidOut and Layton Giordani was released.

Cube

In 2010, deadmau5 presented the Cube stage structure for the first time at Coachella. It became one of the most recognisable elements of his live project.

The concept was built around a geometric structure covered with video surfaces, with Zimmerman positioned inside or above it. The visual content was synchronised with the music and lighting.

The system was rebuilt several times over the following years. Cube 2.1 debuted in 2017, while Cube v3 premiered at Ultra Music Festival in 2019. The 2019–2020 US Cube v3 tour included 39 performances in 17 cities and, according to the official website citing Pollstar, sold more than 150,000 tickets.

4×4=12

In December 2010, deadmau5 released 4×4=12.

The album combined electro house with progressive, dubstep and other areas of electronic music. Among its best-known tracks are Some Chords, Sofi Needs a Ladder, Cthulhu Sleeps and Raise Your Weapon, featuring vocals by Greta Svabo Bech.

4×4=12 received a Grammy nomination in the Best Dance/Electronic Album category, while Raise Your Weapon was nominated for Best Dance/Electronic Recording. In 2012, deadmau5 also took part in a special electronic segment of the Grammy ceremony alongside Foo Fighters, David Guetta and other artists.

In 2012, deadmau5 released the album > album title goes here <.

One of its central tracks was The Veldt, featuring vocals by Chris James. The idea for the track was inspired by Ray Bradbury’s short story of the same name; Zimmerman discovered the vocalist after Chris James posted his own vocal version of the unfinished track online. The Recording Academy later highlighted The Veldt among the notable deadmau5 works from this period.

The album also featured Professional Griefers with Gerard Way of My Chemical Romance, Superliminal, Channel 42 with Wolfgang Gartner and other tracks.

The album was nominated for a Grammy in the Best Dance/Electronic Album category.

TESTPILOT

In 2013, Zimmerman introduced a separate project called TESTPILOT, focused primarily on techno.

TESTPILOT debuted at SXSW in a joint performance with Richie Hawtin. Separating his techno material under a distinct alias allowed Zimmerman to keep it apart from the more melodic progressive- and electro-house discography of deadmau5.

TESTPILOT later became a permanent part of his touring activity. The project’s catalogue includes both original techno releases and collaborative material, while TESTPILOT performances are often presented separately from traditional deadmau5 sets.

while(1<2)

In June 2014, deadmau5 released the double album while(1<2). The title uses the programming expression “while 1 is less than 2” — a condition that always remains true and therefore describes an infinite loop.

It is one of deadmau5’s most expansive and stylistically diverse works. Alongside club-oriented electronic music, the album includes ambient, piano pieces and more experimental compositions.

while(1<2) received a Grammy nomination in the Best Dance/Electronic Album category.

W:/2016ALBUM/

In 2016, deadmau5 released W:/2016ALBUM/. It was the first full-length deadmau5 album following mau5trap’s transition to a fully independent operating model.

The record included 2448, Glish, Imaginary Friends, Let Go with Grabbitz and other tracks.

The album continued Zimmerman’s characteristic work between two poles — large-scale progressive/electro compositions designed for the live stage and more experimental studio material.

The orchestral project where’s the drop?

In 2018, deadmau5 presented where’s the drop? — an orchestral reinterpretation of his own music created in collaboration with composer and arranger Gregory Reveret.

Instead of conventional electronic production, familiar tracks were rearranged for orchestra. The project was presented in two concerts at The Wiltern in Los Angeles.

In 2019, here’s the drop! was released — an electronic remix project based on material from the orchestral album. The two releases are separate works and are not the same album.

Music for the film Polar

In 2019, Zimmerman composed a full feature-film score for the first time, creating the music for the Netflix action film Polar, directed by Jonas Åkerlund.

The soundtrack allowed him to transfer the distinctive synthesiser textures and atmospheric electronics of his club music into a cinematic format.

Pomegranate, Bridged by a Lightwave and new collaborations

In 2020, deadmau5 released Pomegranate with The Neptunes — Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo. The same year also brought Bridged by a Lightwave with Canadian singer Kiesza.

In 2021, these were followed by Hypnocurrency with REZZ, Channel 43 with Wolfgang Gartner, When the Summer Dies with Lights and Hyperlandia with Foster the People.

These recordings show that after W:/2016ALBUM/, deadmau5 continued to release new material even though he did not issue another solo studio album for an extended period.

Kx5 with Kaskade

In 2022, deadmau5 and Kaskade formalised their long-running collaboration as a separate project called Kx5.

The first single was Escape, featuring vocals by Hayla. The track reached No. 1 on Billboard Dance/Mix Show Airplay. In December 2022, Kx5 gave a large-scale performance at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum before an audience of around 46,000 people.

In March 2023, the self-titled album Kx5 was released. It included Escape, Take Me High, Alive, Avalanche, When I Talk, Bright Lights and other tracks.

The album was nominated for a 2024 Grammy in the Best Dance/Electronic Music Album category, becoming deadmau5’s seventh career Grammy nomination.

REZZMAU5

Another separate direction developed from his collaboration with Canadian producer REZZ.

After the joint single Hypnocurrency, the artists began performing under the name REZZMAU5. In 2023, they released Infraliminal and played a joint set at VELD Festival; the project later also appeared at Tomorrowland.

REZZMAU5 combines REZZ’s darker midtempo aesthetic with deadmau5’s characteristic studio detail and extended electronic structures.

retro5pective and the project’s 25th anniversary

In 2024, deadmau5 staged a series of retro5pective shows marking approximately 25 years of Zimmerman’s musical activity. The programme covered different periods of his catalogue — from early material and BSOD to Cube, TESTPILOT, Kx5 and newer works.

The first major retro5pective show took place at the Hollywood Bowl, followed by performances at Brooklyn Mirage and Red Rocks.

In June 2024, Billboard Canada and Canadian Music Week inducted deadmau5 into the Music Industry Hall of Fame.

The 2024–2026 period

In 2024, deadmau5 continued revisiting his earlier catalogue: new versions of Not Exactly and Strobe appeared, along with the Jaded EP, the joint deadmau5 / TESTPILOT release some ep and the track Familiars, created for the game World of Tanks Blitz.

In 2025, Jupiter was released, followed by the EP Error5. The EP contains four instrumental tracks — Sixes, Patience, 8ths and What A Save. The release was also connected with the tenth anniversary of the game Rocket League. The single Ameonna followed later.

On 20 February 2026, deadmau5 released Science with British vocalist Stevie Appleton. The release was presented both as a full extended version and in a shorter edit.

As of 2026, deadmau5 continues to perform both under his main project and as part of Kx5 and TESTPILOT. His official touring schedule includes festival appearances as well as the traditional Red Rocks shows.

mau5trap and changes to the catalogue structure

mau5trap remains one of the central parts of the deadmau5 ecosystem. The label continues to release both Zimmerman’s music and material by other electronic producers.

In March 2025, Create Music Group acquired the deadmau5 and mau5trap catalogues. The deal covered the accumulated music catalogue and marked a new stage in the commercial management of the project’s body of work, while Zimmerman continued his own musical and creative activity.

mau5trap radio

In September 2018, the international weekly show deadmau5 presents mau5trap radio was launched.

The programme focused on new deadmau5 releases, the mau5trap catalogue and guest mixes from label artists. The first episode aired on SiriusXM BPM, after which the show was distributed through international radio stations and Mixcloud.

Mau5trap Radio is also broadcast on Minatrix.FM.

Musical style

Most of deadmau5’s best-known discography is associated with progressive house and electro house, but his music cannot be reduced to these genres alone.

Many of his works are characterised by extended forms, gradual development of the arrangement, repeating synthesiser sequences and detailed work with timbre. Unlike pop-oriented EDM structures with frequent sectional changes, tracks such as Strobe, Faxing Berlin or Not Exactly can develop a single musical idea over several minutes.

During other periods, Zimmerman has worked with ambient, electro, dubstep, orchestral music, drum & bass and soundtrack music. The techno side of his work is concentrated primarily in the TESTPILOT project. The Recording Academy, for example, described 4×4=12 as combining electro house, dubstep and trance.

Technology and live approach

The technical side has always been part of the deadmau5 project not only in the studio, but also on stage.

Cube, programmable mau5heads, original video graphics and the synchronisation of music with visual systems allowed Zimmerman to develop his concerts as standalone audiovisual productions.

The project has changed constantly: the first Cube appeared in 2010, Cube 2.1 in 2017 and Cube v3 in 2019. Alongside them, more compact setups and special stage projects have also been used.

Zimmerman also regularly works with gaming and interactive formats. In recent years, his music has appeared in World of Tanks Blitz and Rocket League, continuing deadmau5’s long-standing connection with gaming culture.

Awards

deadmau5 has received seven Grammy Award nominations. Nominated works include his remix of Morgan Page’s The Longest Road, Foo Fighters’ Rope (deadmau5 Mix), Raise Your Weapon, the albums 4×4=12, > album title goes here <, while(1<2) and the collaborative Kx5 album. As of 2026, the artist has not won a Grammy.

At Canada’s JUNO Awards, deadmau5 has received four awards from 15 nominations.

deadmau5 today

deadmau5 remains an active electronic project by Joel Zimmerman, bringing together his own releases, mau5trap, live productions and the parallel projects TESTPILOT, Kx5 and REZZMAU5. His catalogue spans more than two decades — from early-2000s internet releases to Error5, Ameonna and Science. At the same time, the project’s most recognisable characteristics remain unchanged: extended electronic forms, close attention to production technology and a strong connection between the music and the visual side of live performances.
