Claptone is an anonymous German DJ and music producer working primarily at the intersection of house, deep house and tech house. The public history of the project begins around 2012, while the international breakthrough is associated with the single No Eyes featuring JAW. His stage persona became defined by a golden long-beaked mask, black clothing, a top hat and white gloves — a visual code that has accompanied Claptone throughout his career.
Anonymity as part of the project
The identity of the person behind the Claptone mask officially remains undisclosed. The artist has consistently maintained this concept and, in interviews, speaks about Claptone as an independent stage identity that exists together with the mask. Over the years, numerous theories have emerged about who performs under the name and how many people may be involved in the project’s live activity, but none of these versions has received official confirmation.
The golden mask evokes both Venetian carnival imagery and the historical plague doctor mask. Together with the top hat and white gloves, it has formed one of the most easily recognisable visual identities in the contemporary house scene. Claptone typically answers questions about his identity within the mythology he has created, without breaking the stage character.
At the same time, anonymity does not mean distance from the audience. Claptone regularly gives interviews, runs his own media projects and tours actively, while biographical details such as his real name, age and private life are deliberately kept outside the public image.
Early career and first releases
Claptone’s first notable records appeared in the early 2010s. Cream was released in 2012, and the project soon became closely associated with the catalogue of the Berlin label Exploited, which played an important role in the artist’s early development.
The key breakthrough came in 2013 with the release of No Eyes featuring French vocalist JAW from dOP. The single was officially released by Exploited on 4 February 2013 and gradually became one of Claptone’s most recognisable records.
No Eyes already contained many of the elements that would later become associated with his music: a restrained house groove, warm low-end movement, melancholic vocals and the atmosphere of a late-night club without a massive EDM drop.
No Eyes was followed by further original releases and remixes, while Claptone gradually moved from the European deep house environment onto the international festival circuit.
Remixes and Liquid Spirit
Remix work has become one of the most important parts of Claptone’s catalogue. Over the years, he has created official versions of tracks by Gregory Porter, Pet Shop Boys, Depeche Mode, New Order, Elton John and Dua Lipa, Michael Kiwanuka, Mark Ronson, Gorillaz, RÜFÜS DU SOL, Ava Max and many other artists.
A special place belongs to his remix of Liquid Spirit by Gregory Porter. Claptone transformed the jazz composition into a house track while preserving Porter’s distinctive vocal and building an elastic dance rhythm around it. The remix became one of the best-known examples of his ability to move material from a completely different musical environment into a club context. Claptone’s official biography lists Liquid Spirit among the key remixes of his career.
Another notable example is his remix of Love Is a Bourgeois Construct by Pet Shop Boys. The collaboration later came full circle when Pet Shop Boys themselves remixed Claptone’s Queen of Ice.
Charmer — the debut studio album
Claptone’s debut studio album Charmer was released on 16 October 2015. The record contained 13 tracks and marked his transition from predominantly club-oriented singles toward a more song-based format.
The album featured JAW, Nathan Nicholson, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Peter Bjorn and John and other guest musicians. Among the best-known tracks from the period are Dear Life, Heartbeat, The Only Thing and Puppet Theatre.
Charmer established a model that Claptone would continue developing on later albums: house remains the foundation, but vocals and traditional song structure are given considerably more space than in most functional club releases.
This duality became one of the project’s most consistent characteristics. In DJ sets, Claptone can work with more direct house and tech house, while the albums more often move toward indie-pop, soul and melodic electronic songwriting.
The Masquerade
In the mid-2010s, Claptone’s musical concept developed into its own event format with The Masquerade. The themed house party series began taking shape around 2016 and gradually expanded to venues in different countries. Its visual world is built around masquerade imagery, theatrical characters, elaborate decorations and Claptone’s own golden aesthetic.
The Masquerade has taken place at The Brooklyn Mirage in New York, Club Space in Miami, Tomorrowland, as well as in London, Amsterdam, Los Angeles and other cities. The line-up changes from event to event, but house in its various forms remains the central genre. Guests over the years have included Black Coffee, Pete Tong, Purple Disco Machine, MK, Fatboy Slim, Armand Van Helden and other artists.
In 2019, The Masquerade received its first full seasonal residency in Ibiza at Pacha. The project later continued returning to the island, spending a season at Amnesia in 2024 before the residency moved to Chinois, where it continued with subsequent seasons.
The Masquerade became the second major element of Claptone’s identity after the golden mask itself: it is no longer simply a concert series, but an independent event brand with its own visual language and curatorial approach to line-ups.
Fantast
The second studio album, Fantast, was released in 2018. It continued the song-oriented direction of Charmer while making the sound lighter and more melodic. The record featured Zola Blood, Ben Duffy, Nathan Nicholson, TENDER, Matt Simons, Kele Okereke, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah and other performers.
Key tracks from the album include Under the Moon, Birdsong, In the Night, Stronger and La Esperanza. Musically, Fantast sits between deep house, vocal house and indie-electronic, retaining a club rhythm while placing considerable emphasis on atmosphere and the voices of its guest artists.
By this point, Claptone’s album music already differed noticeably from many of his DJ-oriented releases. While club singles were primarily designed for the dancefloor, his full-length records consistently developed a more melodic and emotional side of the project.
The Drums, Drop the Pressure and the expansion of the house sound
Alongside the albums, Claptone continued releasing standalone club records. The Drums (Din Daa Daa) with George Kranz connected contemporary house with the legacy of his famous rhythmic track Din Daa Daa. Later, one of Claptone’s most notable releases was Drop the Pressure — a reworking of material by Mylo, which also received a separate version with Purple Disco Machine.
Such releases reflect Claptone’s long-standing interest in the history of dance music. His catalogue regularly draws on disco, electro, synth-pop and house from previous decades, although older material is usually not treated as literal retro reconstruction but instead used as the foundation for a new club track.
Closer and working with Stuart Price
Claptone’s third studio album Closer was released on 12 November 2021 through Different Recordings / PIAS. Stuart Price played a major role in the creation of the record as its co-producer.
The album became Claptone’s most pronounced pop-crossover project up to that point. Guest performers included Seal, Barry Manilow, James Vincent McMorrow, Peter Bjorn and John, Mayer Hawthorne, Mansionair, APRE, Dizzy, Nathan Nicholson, Two Another and others.
Just A Ghost was recorded with Seal, James Vincent McMorrow provided vocals on Wake Up, Dizzy appeared on Queen of Ice, while Barry Manilow featured on Nobody.
Closer firmly established the division between two sides of Claptone. The albums became the territory of vocal electronic music and crossover songwriting, while standalone singles and DJ sets continued to serve the more direct club side of his work.
How Claptone builds his DJ sets
Despite the theatrical visual identity, a Claptone performance remains primarily a DJ set rather than a fully pre-programmed live show.
The artist has explained that he does not plan an entire performance in advance. He prepares musical material, but makes the final track selections in front of the audience, responding to the dancefloor. According to Claptone, the sets are mixed live and the tracklist changes from one performance to another.
This approach reflects his musical range. A single set may include vocal house, deep house, tech house, disco-influenced records, his own remixes and more energetic peak-time tracks.
Groove remains the constant element. Even when Claptone’s arrangements become brighter or move closer to pop, the music is rarely built around a typical big room drop: the main movement comes from bass, percussion, piano chords and vocal hooks.
Golden Recordings
In March 2023, Claptone launched his own label, Golden Recordings. The first release was the instrumental single Euphoria. The artist described the idea behind the label as a platform dedicated to house music, its historical roots and its ability to constantly take on new forms.
Euphoria was followed by Flashdance, recorded with New York electro pioneer Man Parrish. It is an original 2023 collaboration inspired by early electro and early-1980s hip-hop.
The Golden Recordings catalogue also expanded with The Big Easy and releases by CASSIMM, Wh0, Crusy, Yolanda Be Cool and other house producers. The label therefore became not only a channel for Claptone’s own releases, but also an independent curatorial platform.
New music after Closer
After Closer, Claptone continued alternating between vocal collaborations and more functional house releases. In 2023, he released Digging Deeper with Alison Goldfrapp, while the Golden Recordings catalogue added Euphoria, Flashdance and The Big Easy.
In 2024, Come With Me continued the more club-oriented line of Golden Recordings. At the same time, Claptone remained active as a remixer, working with tracks by artists from different generations — from New Order and Depeche Mode to contemporary pop and electronic projects.
The next album cycle gradually returned the emphasis to vocal melodic house and the theme of travel, which became the basis of his fourth studio album.
Wanderer
On 8 May 2026, Claptone released his fourth studio album, Wanderer. The record contains 11 tracks and continues the characteristic combination of house with fully developed song structures found across his albums.
Guest musicians include Henry Camamile, Raphaella, Crystal Fighters, Hannah Boleyn, Sea Girls and Nathan Nicholson. The album includes Phantasy, Turn Up The Love, Black & Gold, Put Your Love On Me, Sandcastles, Wanderlust and other tracks.
The production of Wanderer retains familiar Claptone elements — warm house chords, vocal hooks and carefully constructed dance rhythms — while organic instrumentation and more spacious melodic house arrangements become more prominent. The album’s official description connects it with themes of movement, impermanence, intimacy and human connection.
The arrival of Wanderer eleven years after the debut Charmer demonstrates the consistency of Claptone’s album-oriented work: it develops in parallel with club singles, remixes and The Masquerade rather than replacing them.
DJ Mag and the international audience
Claptone first entered the main DJ Mag Top 100 DJs ranking in 2017 at No. 69. In subsequent years, he repeatedly became the highest-ranked house DJ in the poll; DJ Mag specifically awarded him the status of Highest House DJ in 2019 and 2020, while Claptone’s official biography states that he achieved the distinction five years in a row.
In 2024, Claptone ranked No. 32, and in 2025 he rose to No. 30. Since the Top 100 DJs is based on open public voting, these positions primarily reflect the project’s international popularity.
Over the course of his touring career, Claptone has performed at Tomorrowland, Coachella, Ultra Music Festival, Creamfields, Rock in Rio and numerous other major festivals, while simultaneously maintaining his own club infrastructure through The Masquerade.

Musical style
Claptone’s music grew out of the deep house sound of the early 2010s, but over time became considerably broader. In his club releases, house and tech house occupy the central position, while the studio albums lean more strongly toward vocal house, indie-electronic and dance-pop. Claptone himself has described the evolution in broadly similar terms: from deeper early records toward accessible house hits and energetic peak-time tracks.
His characteristic sound is built on a dense but uncluttered rhythm section, expressive basslines, piano chords, vocal phrases and melancholic harmony. Even his brightest compositions often retain a subtle sense of introspection first heard in No Eyes and carried through later albums.
Vocals play a significant role. JAW and Nathan Nicholson became recurring collaborators during the early and middle periods, while the catalogue later expanded through work with Seal, Barry Manilow, James Vincent McMorrow, Alison Goldfrapp, Crystal Fighters and other artists from different musical backgrounds.
Claptone’s place in contemporary house music
Claptone’s career is built around several interconnected directions. Club singles and remixes maintain his connection with the house scene, studio albums reveal the more song-oriented and melodic side of the project, The Masquerade translates the artist’s visual aesthetic into an independent event format, while Golden Recordings gives him his own label platform.
Anonymity, meanwhile, remains not a promotional mystery that must eventually be solved, but a stable part of Claptone’s overall construction. The golden mask allows the project to preserve a consistent character regardless of changing trends or musical cycles, while the music itself continues to evolve — from early deep house and No Eyes to large-scale vocal albums and more energetic contemporary house releases.
It is precisely this combination of a recognisable visual identity, an extensive remix discography, his own event series and four studio albums that has made Claptone a notable figure on the international house scene, whose story has long since moved beyond the original mystery surrounding the person behind the golden mask.
