Argy

Argy (Argyris Theofilis) is a Greek DJ, producer and electronic music artist born in 1985 on the island of Rhodes. After emerging on the European minimal and techno scene in the mid-2000s, he went on to work across house, deep house, tech house, progressive house and experimental electronic music before achieving wider recognition for his own take on melodic techno. Among his best-known tracks are Love Dose, Ketuvim, Tataki, Pantheon, Aria, Higher Power, Sierra and RITMO. His album discography includes Fundamentals, The Interior Journey, New World and NEWORLD II, while he also recorded the album Dominonation with vocalist Mama.

Argyris Theofilis grew up on Rhodes and began making electronic music while still at school. After graduating, he moved to London to study music technology. His international career began in 2005, when the German label Poker Flat Recordings, founded by Steve Bug, released his debut EP Love Dose.

The title track quickly gained support across the European club scene and became Argy’s first major success. One of the artists who strongly supported the record was Luciano, who also produced his own remix of Love Dose. For the young producer, the release became an entry point into the international network of independent house and techno labels.

Early years: Poker Flat, Cocoon and the European club scene

Argy’s early sound took shape during the peak of minimal house and minimal techno. His tracks were built around rhythm, basslines and subtle shifts within the groove, without the large-scale melodic climaxes that would characterise much of his later work. Following his debut, he continued releasing music on Poker Flat and also appeared on Raum...musik, Cocoon Recordings and other European labels.

His DJ career developed in parallel. By around the age of twenty, Argy had already performed at Berlin’s Panorama Bar, and he later became a regular presence at major clubs across Europe and Ibiza. Unlike artists whose early reputation was driven mainly by individual hit records, Argy built his name through a combination of original releases and consistent club performances.

In 2008, Poker Flat released Focus On: Argy. It is sometimes listed among his albums, although in format it is better described as an artist compilation made up of his own tracks and collaborative productions.

In 2009, Argy founded his own label, These Days. The imprint allowed him to release material without being tied too rigidly to a single style and became an important part of his work over the following decade.

DJ mixes and Fundamentals

Alongside his studio output, artist-curated DJ mixes have played an important role in Argy’s career. In 2010, These Days released Argy Presents: D.Edge São Paulo, connected to the well-known Brazilian club D-Edge. The selection featured music by Kerri Chandler, Jerome Sydenham, Aril Brikha, Motor City Drum Ensemble and Argy himself, reflecting his interest in American house, European techno and deeper club music.

In 2011, Ibadan Records released Fundamentals, Argy’s first full-length solo album. Compared with his earlier minimalist releases, the record significantly broadened his musical range. Its arrangements incorporated more classic house, richer harmonic writing and a stronger influence from American dance music.

Another notable release from this period was the double DJ mix Vagabundos 2013, recorded by Argy together with Andrea Oliva for Cadenza. Connected to the Vagabundos club series, the release highlighted not only his own production work but also his ability as a DJ to build a long-form musical narrative from tracks by other artists.

Zodiac Free Arts Club

Argy’s desire to work outside conventional club structures led to the creation of Zodiac Free Arts Club. Under this name, he explored music inspired by krautrock, kosmische and 1970s psychedelic electronics.

The album Floating World, released by Permanent Vacation in 2011, differed markedly from his dancefloor-focused catalogue. The project was based around free-form studio jams and drew on the traditions of the German experimental scene, including Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze, Popol Vuh and Ash Ra Tempel. The name Zodiac Free Arts Club also referenced Berlin’s Zodiak Free Arts Lab, an experimental venue active in the late 1960s.

The project occupies an important place in Theofilis’s discography: his interest in atmospheric synthesiser textures and extended musical forms appeared long before the period with which his melodic techno work would later become associated.

Argy & Mama

In the first half of the 2010s, Argy began collaborating with vocalist Mama (Simone Ogunbunmi). Following the Recluse EP, released by BPitch Control in 2014, the project developed into a full-length album.

Dominonation was released by BPitch Control in 2015. The album combined house with elements of garage, 2-step, R&B and 1990s club music. Mama’s vocals occupied a central place in the compositions, making the record noticeably different both from Argy’s earlier minimalist work and from his instrumental experiments as Zodiac Free Arts Club.

Throughout the 2010s, Argy continued releasing music on Cadenza, Crosstown Rebels, Cuttin' Headz, Bedrock, Permanent Vacation, Desolat and other labels. At the same time, he remained active as a touring DJ, performing in Berlin, London, Ibiza and other major centres of the European club scene.

The Interior Journey and Ketuvim

In 2021, Renaissance Records released the album The Interior Journey. It marked a significant shift in Argy’s studio approach. The tracks became more spacious, while extended synth lines, dramatic harmonies and elements of progressive house and melodic techno became increasingly prominent.

One of the most important works from this period was Ketuvim. Argy later described it as a turning point in his career. The track attracted the attention of Matteo Milleri of Tale Of Us, one of the co-founders of Afterlife, which led to Argy beginning a working relationship with the label.

This stage was very different from the conventional debut of a new artist: by the time Ketuvim appeared, Argy had already been releasing music for around fifteen years, had founded his own label, completed several album projects and accumulated extensive international experience as a DJ.

Tataki and the Afterlife period

In 2022, Afterlife released Tataki. Built around a heavy, pulsing rhythm, a distinctive synth riff and a short repeating vocal motif, the track became one of Argy’s most successful releases and significantly expanded his audience.

The music of this period retained the club foundations of his previous work, but the scale of the arrangements changed. Repeating rhythmic cycles were now combined with large synth themes, extended builds and pronounced climaxes designed to translate effectively to festival stages and large performance spaces.

In 2023, a series of major collaborative releases followed. Argy recorded Pantheon with Goom Gum, while his collaboration with Omnya resulted in Aria. With Anyma, he released Higher Power. Argy and Omnya also created an official remix of Laura by German musician Monolink.

New World and NEWORLD

On 15 March 2024, Afterlife released the album New World. Across fourteen tracks, Argy brought together the main elements of his new period: a rhythmically forceful club foundation, synthesiser arpeggios, large-scale melodic themes, choral parts and short vocal fragments.

Over time, the idea of NEWORLD expanded beyond the title of an album. Argy began developing it as a separate artistic project combining music with stage design, visual imagery and video. The aesthetic of this period shows a clear influence from science fiction, particularly the visual language of The Matrix film series.

The NEWORLD concept became the basis for Argy’s standalone audiovisual shows and his performances at major festivals. At the same time, the project continued a pattern present throughout his career: rather than settling permanently into a single genre, he brought together elements of techno, house, progressive music and more cinematic forms of electronic composition within his own stage language.

Alongside club releases, Theofilis has also worked on functional and commissioned music, creating material for projects and campaigns by international brands. This side of his career developed in parallel with his main work as a DJ and producer and demonstrates his interest in applying electronic composition beyond the dance floor.

NEWORLD II

On 30 January 2026, Argy released NEWORLD II through his own NEWORLD label. The album continued the concept of its predecessor but was built around a large number of collaborations.

Contributors included Omiki, TNY, Ekko, John Cala, Ovadia, ØSHER, Adam Sellouk, Joshlane, Eli & Dani, PEKI, MEDUZA, PollyAnna, SOLANCE, Son of Son and Omnya. The tracklist featured DONA, Control, WIND, Running, Into The Deep, BOOM, Feel Alive, Rage, Papito, Chasing Highs, Melodia, Alto, DURO, RITMO and Omiki’s remix of Aria.

Releasing the record through his own label was a logical continuation of the path Argy had begun with These Days: once again, he had an independent platform for his music, but this time it was connected not only to releasing records, but also to the wider NEWORLD concept and its live presentation.

Argy’s musical style

Argy’s discography spans several clearly distinct periods. His early releases took shape within the minimal house and techno scenes of the mid-2000s. Fundamentals placed greater emphasis on classic and deep house influences, while Zodiac Free Arts Club allowed him to explore krautrock, kosmische and psychedelic electronic music. His work with Mama expanded the vocal side of his output, while The Interior Journey marked a move towards a larger-scale progressive and melodic sound.

Despite the differences between these phases, Argy’s music consistently shows a strong focus on repetition and a clearly identifiable central motif. This may take the form of a bassline, a short vocal phrase, a synthesiser riff or a chord sequence. In his early recordings, that principle served a minimalist groove; during the Afterlife period, it became the foundation for larger and more dramatic arrangements.

In Argy’s contemporary work, the voice is often used not as a conventional lead vocal but as an independent rhythmic and timbral element. A single word, short phrase or choral fragment may be repeated many times until it becomes the main recognisable motif of the track. This approach is particularly evident in Tataki, Aria and other works from his later period.

Argy’s career is notable above all for its longevity and for his ability to substantially reinvent his sound more than once. Love Dose established him as a recognised figure on the European minimal scene, Fundamentals revealed his interest in classic house, Zodiac Free Arts Club opened up the experimental side of his work, while Ketuvim and Tataki marked the beginning of the largest-scale phase of his international career. His success in melodic techno was therefore the result of many years of work within electronic music rather than the starting point of his biography.
