Major Lazer
WUKONG is a Singaporean DJ and music producer of Chinese descent, whose real name is Alvin Ngor Xuan Hong, also known as Alfy Ngor. He was born in 1991 in Singapore. His electronic music sits at the intersection of hard dance, techno, trance, bass music and elements of traditional Asian musical culture. The artist describes his own direction with the term Oriental Rave.
WUKONG’s international discography includes releases on Liquid State, Barong Family, Spinnin' Records, RioX and other labels. His best-known works include Legend Of Wong Fei Hung: Rebirth, Phoenix Rave, Heart for Rent, I Believe, Let Me Go and Drip Drip.
Early music career
Ngor has said that he became interested in raves and electronic music while still young and taught himself production using educational material available online. Before releasing music internationally, he played in clubs and at private parties in Singapore.
His first notable release period came in 2019. On 11 January, WUKONG released the four-track The Almighty EP on Rude Mood Records. It included The Monkey King, Maya with KAKU, Asura and NAGA FIRE – Pop On That $hit.
This release already introduced a theme that would later become central to the project. The title The Monkey King, the visual aesthetic and WUKONG’s later releases all draw on characters, symbols and stories from Chinese culture.
The origin of the name WUKONG
The stage name is connected to Sun Wukong — the Monkey King, one of the central characters in the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West.
Ngor himself has explained that he had been particularly fascinated by the character since childhood. For him, Sun Wukong represents strength, resilience and the ability to overcome obstacles. The artist carried these qualities into the concept of his own stage project.
Liquid State and the first international releases
On 16 August 2019, WUKONG and Nimez released Immortal Peach Garden on Liquid State.
Liquid State had been founded a year earlier by Sony Music Entertainment and Tencent Music Entertainment Group as a label focused on developing Asia’s electronic music scene and fostering collaboration between Asian and international artists.
In January 2020, WUKONG appeared with Moon Rush on the Barong Family release Angel of War.
Another important release followed on 10 April 2020 — Siam Rising with Dutch producer Wiwek. The single was also released on Liquid State.
Imprisonment and career break
In 2020, Alfy Ngor was sentenced in Singapore to 21 months in prison for voluntarily causing grievous hurt with a weapon. He served 14 months and was released in August 2021.
In an interview with CNA, the artist said that he spent around a year under conditions of strict isolation. He used this period to reassess his decisions and plan the next stage of his music career. According to Ngor, the ideas for the future tracks Legend Of Wong Fei Hung: Rebirth and Phoenix Rave were already taking shape while he was in prison.
Return and Phoenix Rave
After his release in August 2021, Ngor once again focused on production and live performances.
In March 2022, he released Phoenix Rave with Double Noize. The title itself fitted the new stage of the project well: WUKONG was returning to active touring and releasing music after a long break.
During this period, the artist began to build both his music and visual identity more consistently around Chinese mythology and traditional Asian motifs.
Legend Of Wong Fei Hung: Rebirth
On 25 May 2022, Legend Of Wong Fei Hung: Rebirth was released on RioX Records.
The track is based on the famous musical theme associated with the Chinese folk hero and martial artist Wong Fei-hung. James Wong is credited in the official credits as the composer of the original musical foundation.
WUKONG reworked the material into a high-energy electronic track running at around 141 BPM. The recording became one of the central works of the project and spread particularly widely across Asian social media. WUKONG’s official website describes it as one of the artist’s major viral releases.
In January 2023, Legend Of Wong Fei Hung: Rebirth, Pt. 2 followed.
ZoukOut and the return to major stages
One of the key events of 2022 was WUKONG’s appearance at Singapore’s ZoukOut festival. Before that, his own show at Zouk Singapore had sold out within minutes.
At ZoukOut 2022, WUKONG appeared on the same festival lineup as Tiësto.
The artist continued to develop the live concept further. At ZoukOut 2023, he integrated a live Chinese orchestra and elements of Chinese opera into his electronic performance. A similar approach was used in 2024 at Pitt Club in Kuala Lumpur.
The combination of a DJ set, Asian instrumental traditions and stage visualisation became one of the defining features of WUKONG’s live project.
Oriental Rave
WUKONG calls his own musical direction Oriental Rave.
It is not a strictly defined genre with an established set of musical rules. Rather, the term refers to an original concept in which WUKONG combines modern rave music with Chinese instruments, melodic motifs, language, cinematic imagery and mythology.
In a 2024 profile, DJ Mag described his sound as Oriental rave, hard dance and techno, while in 2025 the description was expanded to include Oriental rave, techno, drum & bass and rave bangers.
For this reason, describing WUKONG simply as an EDM DJ is too broad, while calling him exclusively a techno or hardstyle producer is too narrow.
International collaborations
In 2024, WUKONG’s international discography expanded significantly.
With Bassjackers, he released I Believe; with British producer Ben Nicky, he released Let Me Go; and with American melodic bass producer NURKO, he released Heart for Rent. DJ Mag highlighted all three releases among the key works of this period.
In 2025, Drip Drip with R3HAB was released, as well as My Immortal with MOGUAI and Crazy Donkey. That same year, WUKONG also released an official remix of the Chinese hit Jumping Machine (跳楼机).
DJ Mag also reported that a joint project called WUJACKERS was being developed with Bassjackers.
DJ Mag Top 100 DJs
In 2024, WUKONG entered the DJ Mag Top 100 DJs for the first time, placing No. 87.
A year later, he improved his position and reached No. 83 in the 2025 ranking.
Top 100 DJs is based on an open public vote, so it primarily reflects the international popularity of artists rather than serving as a professional assessment of production quality.
2026 releases
In 2026, WUKONG continued to expand his international collaborations.
On 16 January, Bassjackers, WUKONG and Evil Twiin released Rave Baby. In the official credits, WUKONG is listed as one of the songwriters, arrangers and producers of the track.
Whenever You're Alone and Blow Your Whistle were also released. The latter came out on 12 June 2026.
These works continue the harder side of WUKONG’s catalogue, where Oriental Rave intersects with trance, techno and contemporary festival rave music.
Musical style
The foundation of WUKONG’s work is not simply the addition of “ethnic melodies” over an EDM arrangement.
His releases and performances incorporate references to Chinese music and culture, traditional instruments, martial arts themes, mythological characters and imagery from Chinese cinema. On stage, this concept has expanded to include a live orchestra and elements of traditional opera.
At the same time, the electronic side of the project changes from release to release. The early catalogue included trap, psytrance, bass music and hard dance, while techno, trance and faster rave-oriented styles later became increasingly prominent.

WUKONG today
WUKONG continues to develop Oriental Rave as his own musical and stage concept. While the artist’s early catalogue was primarily a regional Asian project, since 2022 there has been a noticeable increase in international collaborations, festival appearances and releases with European and American electronic producers. In 2024–2025, this growth was also reflected in WUKONG’s appearance in the DJ Mag Top 100 DJs.
