Michael Bibi is the British DJ, music producer, and club event promoter Michael James Lawrence Bibi, born on June 23, 1990, in London, United Kingdom. He is best known as the founder of the club project Solid Grooves and co-founder of Solid Grooves Records, created together with PAWSA. Bibi became one of the most recognizable figures in the modern British tech house scene, combining his career as a DJ and producer with the development of his own international music community. His key works include Hanging Tree, Got The Fire, Garden Of Groove, Otto's Chant, Lemonade, Shaolin Dreams, La Murga (Michael's Midnight Mix), Different Side, and Sungazing (Electronic Mix).
Michael Bibi’s career developed gradually and for a long time remained closely tied to London’s club culture. Before gaining international recognition, he searched for venues himself, organized parties, spread the word among friends and acquaintances, and built an audience around the music he personally wanted to hear on the dancefloor. This path also shaped the later philosophy of Solid Grooves: rather than following mainstream musical trends, the project grew around a particular club sound, a consistent circle of artists, and a community of listeners.
Growing up in London and early musical interests
Michael Bibi grew up in Wimbledon in southwest London, in a family directly connected with music and dance. His father, Robin Bibi, is a British blues guitarist, while his mother taught dance. His father taught him guitar and drums, so Bibi’s introduction to music came long before his interest in club culture. As a child, he studied classical guitar and successfully completed music examinations.
His interest in electronic music developed through the British bass scene. His early influences included UK garage, hardcore, and drum & bass. Bibi bought vinyl records in London shops and began taking DJing seriously after first seeing how two separate tracks could be blended into one continuous musical flow. His father then bought him a pair of Numark turntables, on which Michael began teaching himself how to mix.
During his teenage years, he attended drum & bass parties connected with London’s club scene, but at around nineteen his musical direction changed after a trip to Ibiza. The legendary Manumission party made a particularly strong impression on him. The open structure of house music, the extended development of tracks, and the atmosphere of Ibiza gradually displaced heavier bass genres from the center of his musical interests.
Travelling through Asia and deciding to become a DJ
On his father’s advice, Bibi completed a three-year course related to electrical engineering, but he had little desire to work in the field. After finishing his studies, he travelled through Southeast Asia. It was there that music first changed from a hobby into a possible profession. At one bar, Bibi regularly selected music from his laptop and was later offered the opportunity to play there every night. He installed DJ software and began learning full mixing techniques in a real venue environment.
After returning to London, Michael decided to focus on DJing. At the time, he was particularly drawn to minimal house and the more rhythmic strand of British house developing at smaller parties and clubs. Entering the professional scene, however, proved difficult: Bibi had almost no industry connections and repeatedly faced rejection when approaching London venues. His solution was to create his own event.
The creation of Solid Grooves
In 2012, Michael Bibi launched the London club series Solid Grooves. The name came from an expression Bibi and his friends used for particularly effective, groove-driven tracks. One of the first venues was Brixton Jamm, and during 2012 Solid Grooves events were already taking place across several locations in South London. Lineups included Alex Arnout, Hot Since 82, Anja Schneider, Hector Couto, East End Dubs, and other artists from the club scene of the time.
In the early stages, Bibi personally handled promotion for the parties. He handed out flyers outside clubs and relied primarily on people he had met as a regular participant in London nightlife. Solid Grooves gradually evolved from a local event series into a recognizable brand, with musical selection remaining more important than the project’s visual presentation. Its foundation became house and tech house with prominent basslines, relatively few unnecessary elements, and a strong emphasis on continuous rhythmic movement.
PAWSA and Solid Grooves Records
In 2013, Bibi met PAWSA, London producer David Esekhile, at one of the Solid Grooves parties. The two quickly discovered a similar approach to music and club culture. PAWSA began performing at Solid Grooves events, and in 2015 they jointly launched Solid Grooves Records. The label was created as a platform for the founders’ own music as well as artists connected with their parties.
Solid Grooves later released music by Dennis Cruz, ANOTR, wAFF, Josh Butler, Route 94, Ben Sterling, and many other producers. Alongside the main catalog, the RAW imprint developed around more direct club material. By the mid-2020s, Solid Grooves had become not only a label but also an international network of events, festival programs, and residencies. In 2023, Solid Grooves Records received the DJ Mag Best of British award for Best Label.
Early releases and the development of his own style
Bibi began making his first musical sketches while still a teenager, teaching himself production software. He moved into regular professional studio work in the middle of the 2010s. His tracks appeared not only on Solid Grooves but also on VIVa MUSiC, Snatch!, Repopulate Mars, and other club labels. A recognizable style gradually emerged: a heavy bassline, restrained percussion, short vocal phrases, and a limited number of elements that subtly evolve throughout the track to maintain constant rhythmic tension.
Sampling plays a major role in Bibi’s music. His early interest in UK garage and drum & bass taught him to treat a found voice or sound as a musical instrument in its own right. Later, he built tracks around fragments from films, old recordings, voices heard by chance, and other sources. As a producer, he generally prefers to capture the main idea quickly without overloading it with technical detail, and only afterwards decide whether the sketch is worth developing into a finished release.
Hanging Tree and the international breakthrough
The major turning point in Michael Bibi’s career was Hanging Tree, released in 2018. The track is built around vocal material from the film The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1, in which Jennifer Lawrence performs The Hanging Tree. Bibi remembered the idea after watching the film, returned to it several years later, and assembled the final version of the track in roughly 45 minutes. That same evening, he played it for the first time at London club Egg.
Hanging Tree quickly spread among listeners and DJs and became the most important release of Michael Bibi’s early career. Before that point, he was already known within the British club scene through Solid Grooves, but the track’s success dramatically expanded his international audience. Soon afterwards, Bibi was filling major London venues under his own name; in October 2019, his solo show at the 3,000-capacity Magazine sold out completely. That same year, he received the Best Tech House DJ award at the DJ Awards.
Got The Fire, Garden Of Groove, and Otto's Chant
The success of Hanging Tree coincided with an especially strong period in Bibi’s discography. In 2018, he released Got The Fire, Wet Glue, and Boomin, followed in 2019 by the EP Garden Of Groove. These releases consolidated the main features of his sound: low, elastic basslines, repeating vocal elements, deliberately restrained arrangements, and close attention to how a track functions inside a long DJ set. Got The Fire and Garden Of Groove later remained among Bibi’s most recognizable recordings.
Another important release was Otto's Chant, created with Skream and released in 2019. The collaboration reflected the breadth of Bibi’s musical background: both producers grew up within British club culture, although they arrived at house from different directions. In Michael Bibi’s catalog, this period definitively separated him from the large volume of purely functional tech house releases: his identity increasingly relied not simply on a particular genre formula, but on his choice of distinctive voices, samples, and rhythmic combinations.
International performances and Essential Mix
By the end of the 2010s, both Solid Grooves and Michael Bibi had moved far beyond the British scene. He performed regularly in Ibiza, including during Solid Grooves residencies, and appeared at DC-10, Printworks, Club Space Miami, and major festivals. Extended solo sets became a characteristic part of his reputation, with Bibi preferring to shift the mood gradually rather than constantly alternate between pre-planned peak moments.
In June 2020, he recorded a two-hour Essential Mix for BBC Radio 1. By this point, his musical language was firmly positioned between tech house, minimal house, and deep tech. Bibi was never limited solely to his own label’s catalog: in his sets, he combined released tracks, unreleased material, his own working versions, and music from other producers, structuring the entire program as one extended progression.
Lemonade, Shaolin Dreams, and La Murga
In 2020, Bibi released Lemonade, continuing the harder side of his club music. The following year brought PARADISE featuring Kitty Got Claws and Shaolin Dreams. The latter became another clear example of his approach to sampling and minimalist structure: rather than relying on complex melodic development, its main movement comes from bass, percussion, and short sonic elements.
In 2022, he released La Murga (Michael's Midnight Mix), one of the most notable works of the next phase. By that point, Solid Grooves already occupied a significant place within the European club industry. In December 2022, the project celebrated its tenth anniversary with an event at London’s Printworks for approximately six thousand people. By comparison, the first Solid Grooves anniversary parties had taken place in venues several times smaller.
Different Side and illness
In 2023, Michael Bibi released Different Side together with KinAhau and Audio Bullys. Soon afterwards, his music career came to an unexpected halt. The producer had been experiencing severe tinnitus for some time. After a series of medical examinations, an MRI revealed a mass in the central part of his brain, and in June 2023 his team announced the diagnosis: central nervous system lymphoma (CNS lymphoma), a rare form of lymphoma affecting structures of the brain and spinal cord.
Bibi immediately suspended his performances and began intensive treatment at The Royal Marsden hospital in London. He spent much of the following months in hospital. Treatment included several stages of therapy and a stem cell transplant. During the first months, his general condition and increased sensitivity to sound meant that he listened to almost no music, but later he began saving musical ideas again — even recording rhythmic sounds made by medical equipment on his phone.
An unexpected return at DC-10
In September 2023, after more than one hundred days of treatment, Michael Bibi briefly left hospital and flew to Ibiza. The trip took place during several free days between treatment cycles. After undergoing medical tests on the island, he made a surprise appearance at the Solid Grooves season closing at DC-10 and performed in front of an audience for the first time since his diagnosis.
Before the trip, Bibi used the phrase One Life on social media. It later became the name of an entire project connected with his return and charity work. After the performance, Bibi continued treatment, and on December 5, 2023, he announced that he was officially in remission and that scans showed no signs of cancer.
Returning to the stage and One Life
Michael Bibi’s full return to major performances took place in 2024. In April, he performed at Coachella, his first major festival appearance after his illness. For Bibi himself, the comeback carried more than professional significance: after months of treatment and isolation, he effectively had to reacclimatize to travelling, large crowds, and high-volume sound.
The central event was One Life at London’s Finsbury Park on July 6, 2024. Around 45,000 people attended, while more than £120,000 was raised for The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity. Michael’s father Robin Bibi joined him on stage to play guitar. One Life grew from a symbol of personal recovery into an ongoing direction for the musician’s charity work.
Sungazing and the One Life Foundation
Bibi’s next new release did not arrive until April 2025. Sungazing (Electronic Mix), featuring American artist Alexa Sunshine Rose, became his first released track since Different Side. The idea for the composition had originated before his diagnosis, but during treatment, the possibility of one day finishing and releasing it took on special meaning for the musician. In mood, Sungazing differs noticeably from much of his earlier work: vocals, melody, and a brighter emotional tone move to the foreground.
Part of the revenue from Sungazing was directed to the Michael Bibi One Life Foundation, created by Bibi. The foundation supports people undergoing cancer treatment and develops spaces and programs designed to make extended hospital stays easier for patients and their families. One Life also continued as a series of events, some of which were connected with fundraising for cancer organizations in the United Kingdom and other countries.
That same year, Solid Grooves Records reached its 100th release. The anniversary compilation included Bibi’s track Lil Freaky. He later released Front & Back Seat, gradually returning to the more familiar club-oriented music that contrasted with the emotionally different Sungazing.
A new creative phase
In 2026, Michael Bibi continued actively releasing new music. In May came Bad Wolf featuring UNIIQU3, followed by Lets Get High on Solid Grooves Records. In July, Bibi released Mobile Groove through ELOVATE. The track was built around the recognizable sound of early-2000s Nokia mobile phones, an idea sparked by a video sent to the producer by his brother. The technique perfectly reflects Bibi’s long-standing habit of turning a familiar or randomly discovered sound into the central element of a club track.
In August 2026, he released MYSTERY OF RAW, a collaboration between Michael Bibi, KETTAMA, and Wu-Tang Clan. The release showed that after his recovery, Bibi was not limiting himself to a return to the established Solid Grooves formula, but continued working with artists from other areas of electronic music and hip-hop culture.
Michael Bibi’s musical style
Michael Bibi’s main genres are tech house, minimal house, and deep tech. His individual style, however, is defined less by genre labels than by the way he constructs rhythm. Bibi’s tracks are often based on only a few carefully selected elements: a dense bassline, dry percussion, a short vocal phrase, and one distinctive sample. Instead of constantly adding new layers, he gradually alters the existing elements and maintains tension through rhythm.
Voice and sampling are especially important. Hanging Tree, Otto's Chant, and several other tracks demonstrate his interest in fragments that already possess a strong identity before being placed in a club context. This approach reflects his early interest in UK garage, drum & bass, and vinyl DJ culture, where searching for unusual sonic material was inseparable from the DJ’s craft itself.
The same philosophy can be heard in his performances. Bibi prefers long sets that allow him to change musical direction gradually. A single track may pull the set for several selections toward a harder or, conversely, deeper sound before the DJ guides the program back toward its original mood. His approach therefore revolves less around individual hits than around the overall movement of the dancefloor.
The significance of Solid Grooves
Michael Bibi’s influence on the modern club scene extends beyond his own releases. Solid Grooves became one of the notable platforms for a generation of British and European tech house producers. The project helped create an environment in which the party, the label, and its circle of artists develop as one integrated system: music is tested directly on the dancefloor, then released through the label, and eventually returns to the sets of artists within the community.
Solid Grooves’ journey from small London events to DC-10 residencies, international festivals, and its 100th release demonstrates the scale of that development. Throughout it all, Michael Bibi has retained a central role not only as the face of the project but also as a DJ for whom the club remains the primary environment in which music exists.
