Geri Halliwell (full name Geraldine Estelle Halliwell; born August 6, 1972, Watford, Hertfordshire, England) is a British singer, songwriter, author, actress and television presenter. She became internationally famous as Ginger Spice, one of the five members of Spice Girls.
With Halliwell in the group, Spice Girls recorded «Wannabe», «Say You'll Be There», «2 Become 1», «Who Do You Think You Are», «Mama», «Spice Up Your Life», «Too Much», «Stop» and «Viva Forever». After leaving the group in 1998, Geri Halliwell launched a solo career. Four of her singles topped the UK chart: «Mi Chico Latino», «Lift Me Up», «Bag It Up» and «It's Raining Men».
Outside music, Geri Halliwell has published two autobiographical books, created the children’s series Ugenia Lavender, and later launched the Rosie Frost novel series. She has also worked in television, appeared in films and been involved in public and charitable initiatives.
Childhood and youth
Geraldine Estelle Halliwell was born on August 6, 1972, in Watford, northwest of London. Her mother has Spanish roots. The future singer spent her childhood in Hertfordshire.
Geri Halliwell wanted to enter the entertainment industry long before Spice Girls. After school, she attended numerous auditions and took on a variety of jobs.
Before achieving worldwide fame, Geri Halliwell worked as a nightclub dancer in Mallorca, a model, a sales assistant and a game-show presenter on Turkish television. She later described this period in her first autobiography.
Formation of Spice Girls
The story of the future Spice Girls began in 1994, when producers announced auditions for a new female pop group.
The project brought together Geri Halliwell, Victoria Adams — later Victoria Beckham — Melanie Brown, Melanie Chisholm and, later, Emma Bunton.
Initially, the group worked under different names and remained under the control of the management team that had assembled the lineup. The members, however, wanted greater independence. They eventually changed management, signed with Virgin Records and began performing as Spice Girls.
Geri Halliwell was the oldest member and often represented the group in interviews. Her red hair, vivid stage costumes and energetic manner earned her the nickname Ginger Spice.
Wannabe
In the summer of 1996, Spice Girls released their debut single «Wannabe».
The song topped the UK Singles Chart and remained at number one for seven weeks. «Wannabe» then became an international hit, opening the way for the group into markets across Europe, the United States and other countries.
Each of the five members was presented as a distinct personality with her own style and character. Ginger, Scary, Sporty, Baby and Posh quickly became part of late-1990s popular culture.
Spice
In November 1996, Spice Girls released their debut album Spice.
Alongside «Wannabe», it included:

Girl Power
The slogan Girl Power became an important part of the Spice Girls image. The phrase had existed before, but it was the group that turned it into an internationally recognizable element of pop culture in the second half of the 1990s.
Geri Halliwell actively promoted the idea in interviews. In the Spice Girls interpretation, Girl Power was associated with female independence, friendship, self-confidence and the right to define one’s own identity and image.
The Union Jack dress
One of Geri Halliwell’s most famous stage looks was the mini-dress featuring the British flag that she wore at the BRIT Awards 1997.
She had originally been offered a black Gucci dress. Geri Halliwell decided to alter it and, together with her sister, added the Union Jack design. A peace symbol was placed on the back.
Photographs from the performance were widely reproduced in the press, and the dress became one of the most recognizable stage costumes in British pop music of the 1990s.
Spiceworld
In November 1997, Spice Girls released their second album Spiceworld.
The album featured:

Leaving Spice Girls
In the spring of 1998, the group was in the middle of the large-scale Spiceworld Tour. The intense schedule was accompanied by growing disagreements within the group.
On May 31, 1998, a representative for Geri Halliwell officially announced her departure from Spice Girls. The statement cited differences between the members.
Halliwell later spoke about emotional exhaustion and the feeling that she no longer knew where she belonged within the group.
Her departure came immediately before the North American leg of the tour. The other four members continued touring without her.
Work with the United Nations
After leaving Spice Girls, Geri Halliwell began preparing her solo project while also becoming active in public causes.
In October 1998, the United Nations Population Fund UNFPA appointed her a Goodwill Ambassador.
Her work focused primarily on reproductive health, women’s equality and empowerment.
If Only
In 1999, Geri Halliwell published her first autobiography, If Only.
In the book, she wrote about her childhood, her determination to enter show business, her years with Spice Girls, her departure from the group, self-esteem issues and eating disorders.
The book became one of Halliwell’s first major projects after leaving Spice Girls and was published before the release of her debut solo album.
Look at Me
Geri Halliwell’s first solo single was «Look at Me», released in the spring of 1999.
The song reached number two on the UK chart. In the music video, Halliwell symbolically said goodbye to the Ginger Spice persona and presented several versions of her new stage identity.
Schizophonic
Her debut solo album, Schizophonic, was released in June 1999 and reached number four on the UK Albums Chart.
The title reflected the album’s concept, contrasting different sides of the singer’s public persona.
The album was rooted in bright dance-pop but also included ballads, disco and elements of Latin pop.
Mi Chico Latino
The second single was «Mi Chico Latino», inspired by Geri Halliwell’s Spanish heritage on her mother’s side.
In August 1999, the song reached number one on the UK chart, becoming the first solo chart-topper of her career.
Its Latin arrangement clearly distinguished the track both from Spice Girls material and from «Look at Me».
Lift Me Up and Bag It Up
The next single, «Lift Me Up», also topped the UK chart in November 1999.
In March 2000, «Bag It Up» became her third consecutive solo number one. Geri Halliwell performed the song at the BRIT Awards in a large-scale stage production.
Three of the four singles from Schizophonic reached number one in the UK, while the debut single «Look at Me» peaked at number two.
Scream If You Wanna Go Faster
Her second studio album, Scream If You Wanna Go Faster, was released in May 2001 and reached number five on the UK chart.
The album continued the pop direction of the first release but became more stylistically diverse, incorporating disco, electronic music, pop-rock and ballads.
It's Raining Men
The biggest hit of Halliwell’s second solo era was «It's Raining Men», a cover of the song by The Weather Girls.
Geri Halliwell’s version was associated with the soundtrack to Bridget Jones's Diary and spent two weeks at number one on the UK chart in the spring of 2001.
«It's Raining Men» became Halliwell’s fourth solo number one and one of the best-known hits of her independent career.
It was followed by the title track «Scream If You Wanna Go Faster», which reached number eight, and the ballad «Calling», which peaked at number seven.
Four consecutive solo number ones
Four consecutive Geri Halliwell singles topped the UK chart:
- «Mi Chico Latino» — 1999;
- «Lift Me Up» — 1999;
- «Bag It Up» — 2000;
- «It's Raining Men» — 2001.
In total, eight Geri Halliwell solo singles reached the UK Top 10.
Just for the Record
In 2002, Geri Halliwell published her second autobiographical book, Just for the Record.
While If Only focused mainly on her path to Spice Girls and her departure from the group, the new book covered the first years of her independent career and life after Ginger Spice.
Passion
After several years away, Geri Halliwell returned with the single «Ride It», released in late 2004. The song reached number four in the UK.
In June 2005, she released her third studio album, Passion.
On the album, Geri Halliwell experimented with a more mature pop sound, cabaret, jazz-pop and electronic music. The record included «Passion», «Love Never Loved Me», «Desire», «There's Always Tomorrow», «Let Me Love You More» and «Ride It».
Passion reached number 41 on the UK chart, performing significantly below her previous two albums.
The second single, «Desire», reached number 22.
Pause in solo music
After Passion, Geri Halliwell stopped releasing solo albums on a regular basis.
She did not announce her retirement from music, but focused instead on family, television, books and periodic Spice Girls reunions. After Passion, she released occasional singles including «Half of Me» and «Angels in Chains», but no new studio album appeared for many years.
Birth of Bluebell
On May 14, 2006, Geri Halliwell gave birth to a daughter, Bluebell Madonna Halliwell. The child’s father is screenwriter and director Sacha Gervasi.
After the birth of her daughter, Halliwell’s professional schedule became less intensive.
Spice Girls reunion
In June 2007, all five members of Spice Girls announced a reunion.
A Greatest Hits compilation was prepared with the new single «Headlines (Friendship Never Ends)», followed by the launch of the world tour The Return of the Spice Girls.
For Geri Halliwell, this marked her first full-scale return to the group since leaving in May 1998.
The tour ran through 2007–2008 and ended in February 2008 in Toronto.
Ugenia Lavender
In 2008, Geri Halliwell began working in children’s literature.
She created a book series about a girl named Ugenia Lavender. Six stories were published during the year:

2012 Olympic Games
On August 12, 2012, all five Spice Girls reunited on stage at the closing ceremony of the London Olympic Games.
The group performed «Wannabe» and «Spice Up Your Life» while moving around the stadium on stylized London taxis.
It was the first performance by the complete lineup since the 2007–2008 reunion tour.
Half of Me
In 2013, while working in Australia, Geri Halliwell briefly returned to solo music.
On October 25, she released «Half of Me», her first official solo single since «Desire» in 2005.
The release was issued by Sony Music Australia. It did not repeat the commercial success of her earlier singles, and the planned new solo period did not lead to a fourth studio album.
Television
At the same time, Geri Halliwell regularly worked on television entertainment projects.
She appeared as a guest judge on the British The X Factor and joined the judging panel of Australia's Got Talent in 2013.
Television remained an important part of her professional career during the period when solo music releases became infrequent.
Marriage to Christian Horner
In 2014, Geri Halliwell began a relationship with Formula 1 team principal Christian Horner.
In November that year, the couple announced their engagement, and on May 15, 2015, Geri Halliwell and Christian Horner married in England.
After the wedding, the singer also began using the double surname Halliwell-Horner, although her classic music catalog continues to be released under the name Geri Halliwell.
On January 21, 2017, the couple had a son, Montague George Hector Horner, known in the family as Monty.
Angels in Chains
In June 2017, Geri Halliwell released the solo single «Angels in Chains», dedicated to her friend George Michael, who had died in December 2016.
It was her first UK solo release in twelve years.
The song did not enter the main UK Top 100, but appeared on specialist sales and digital-download charts.
Spice World — 2019 Tour
In 2019, another major Spice Girls reunion took place.
Four members joined the tour:

Victoria Beckham did not take part in the tour.
Spice World — 2019 Tour consisted of 13 stadium concerts across the United Kingdom and Ireland and concluded with a series of shows at Wembley Stadium.
At the final concert, Geri Halliwell publicly apologized to fans and the other members for leaving the group in 1998.
Gran Turismo
In 2023, Geri Halliwell took on a notable role in the sports drama Gran Turismo, directed by Neill Blomkamp.
She played Lesley Mardenborough, the mother of the main character Jann Mardenborough. The film also starred Archie Madekwe, David Harbour, Orlando Bloom and Djimon Hounsou.
The role became one of the most substantial film performances of Geri Halliwell’s acting career.
Rosie Frost and the Falcon Queen
In October 2023, Geri Halliwell returned to children’s literature with the novel Rosie Frost and the Falcon Queen.
The book launched an adventure series about a girl named Rosie Frost, who after her mother’s death finds herself at an unusual school on Bloodstone Island.
The story combines adventure, fantasy elements, a school setting, environmental themes and historical references.
Unlike the shorter Ugenia Lavender books, the new project was conceived as a series of full-length novels.
Rosie Frost: Ice on Fire
On April 8, 2025, the second book in the series, Rosie Frost: Ice on Fire, was released.
It continued the story of Bloodstone Island and expanded the plot surrounding the protagonist’s origins.
The next announced installment in the series was Rosie Frost and the End of Time.
Music and the Rosie Frost series
In the Rosie Frost project, Geri Halliwell combined her literary and musical work.
The books are linked to original songs available to readers through special online materials. This format allowed Halliwell to continue making music outside the traditional cycle of releasing studio pop albums.
Literature and acting projects in the 2020s
During the 2020s, literature and acting became increasingly prominent parts of Geri Halliwell’s career, while solo music releases became occasional.
In 2026, Geri Halliwell was announced as a cast member in the sixth season of Only Murders in the Building, alongside Martin Freeman, Derek Jacobi, Jane Horrocks, Jamie Demetriou and other British actors.
For the sixth season, the creators moved the main action from New York to London. Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez remained in the lead roles.
The sixth season is scheduled to premiere on December 8, 2026.
Spice Girls after the 2019 tour
After the stadium run Spice World — 2019 Tour, Spice Girls did not announce another full-scale touring cycle. The members have appeared together periodically and have repeatedly discussed the possibility of future joint projects.
Geri Halliwell has maintained her connection with Spice Girls and participated in the group’s major reunions after her departure in 1998: the 2007–2008 tour, the closing ceremony of the 2012 Olympic Games and the 2019 tour.
Musical style
Geri Halliwell’s solo music differs noticeably from the collective sound of Spice Girls.
Schizophonic was built around bright dance-pop, disco and Latin influences. «Mi Chico Latino» emphasized a Mediterranean direction, «Bag It Up» used elements of disco and funk, while «Lift Me Up» represented more traditional melodic pop.
Scream If You Wanna Go Faster broadened the stylistic range through pop-rock and electronic music. The biggest commercial success of this period was the disco cover «It's Raining Men».
Passion was a more stylized record, incorporating cabaret, lounge, jazz-pop and electronic pop.

Geri Halliwell contributed to writing a significant part of the first-era Spice Girls repertoire.
